St. Patrick's Branch - Annual Presentation Awards (2015)

This event took place during our St. Patrick's Night Celebrations:

Saturday 14th March saw our Branch’s St. Pat’s Bash in the Hibernian Supporters Association Club. As usual a packed venue with some 220 members and friends having a ball entertained by young dancers from the Paul Dever’s School of Irish Dance, the wonderful Mad Ferret Band and a great disco. Again we were delighted to have present 18 Dutch St. Pat’s members/Hibs fans from Groningen.

We were also delighted to have present George Craig, Head of Football Operations and his wife, along with Stadium Manager Keith Donaldson. A big thanks for the signed strip and Match tickets supplied by Hibernian for the raffle.

The highlight of the evening for many were the presentations by Branch Patron: Patrick Gordon Stanton. The first award was to Alan Lugton for his outstanding contribution to documenting the formation of Hibernian Football Club. He has transmitted his enthusiasm and affection for the Club to his wife, to his children and to his friends and practically all his spare time over decades has been devoted to exploring and recording the history of Hibernian FC. Those thirty years culminated in the wonderful trilogy ‘ The Making of Hibernian’

The second award was the St. Patrick’s Hibernian Achievement Award, which was voted for by members , to Branch member Susan Linn. Susan epitomises the ethos of the Founding Fathers of Hibernian FC in their charitable work for people less fortunate.
She has raised funds from ordinary Hibernian Supporters in order that less fortunate children, are given the opportunity to go to watch the Hibees. Last year she raised over £15,000 from fans and 150 Kids Season Tickets purchased for season 2014-15.
Amongst those who have benefited are……..Pentland Community Centre, Canongate Youth Project, Bingham Community Centre, Drylaw Young People’s Centre, Kids in Care, Carricknowe Primary School, Edinburgh South Deaf Football Club and many, many others……….

Last but not least, a gift and Honourary Membership of St. Patrick’s Branch was presented by Pat to Sammy Martinez. Sammy, the longest living Hibernian FC supporter at the age of 105, has been watching the Hibs home and away since he first came to Scotland in 1942 from British Honduras, modern day Belize, to help with the War effort.
He was 8 years old when World War 1 ended, 35 years old when World War 2 ended, 59 when man first stepped on the Moon and 90 years old as the 21st century dawned.
He worked at Balerno Paper Mill for 25 years, however after retiring at 65, he went back to work at a butchers and kept various other jobs until heart problems forced him to retire at the age of 94. His experiences of emigration were told in a TV documentary, The Tree Fellers, and he also featured in an exhibition at the Imperial War Museum.
