I booked on Wednesday night using trainline. 2 adults and 2 kids return from waverley for £19.80 with our family railcard. leaving approx 9.30am and returning from berwick at 8.40pm. was much cheaper to book as advance singles.

This is yet another example of the nonsensical train prices in Scotland.
I quite often booked two singles instead of a return as, for some strange reason, it was often cheaper.

The tickets you have posted are called advance tickets. They are cheap because you cannot be flexible. You must travel on the train and date you have chosen. Travel at any other time or on the wrong company and it's the full single fare you will be charged.
Tread carfully when booking online tickets because if you make a caaant of it then you won't get a refund.
Just buy the cheap day return to Berwick. Valid on any train.

Turn up on the day and you'll pay £21 for a return I think. It's about £16 if you have a rail card of some description.
