Close Season - New Season start

Just looking through the Key Dates on the SPFL website.
Bottom 6 last game is Saturday 10th May, top 6 is Sunday 11th May

Assuming that we don't go into the play off's, our season will end on 11th May
Last season the opening fixture of the SPFL season was Sunday 4th August, so if we go around the same time, the season 2014/15 will kick off on Saturday 2nd August.
That is almost 3 months, can't remember it being that long for a while.

The only change might be if we were to catch Dundee utd (6 point gap) and qualify for Europe (dependent on who wins the Scottish Cup) , we would play in the Europa League 1st qualifying on the 3rd & 10th July!!!

The break might do me good. I might realise I miss Hibs.

Longer summer break will be a good thing for players and fans ( make us hungry for new season ) . Last summer the players had almost no break between final and first friendly at Dumbarton with 3 players playing for Scotland Under 20 in between . We were relegated in 1980 a year after reaching cup final , Dundee United and St Mirren ( I think ) were relegated the year after being in cup final and I`m sure short close season affects results .

Nae point in qualifying for Europe with Petrie s Transfer Timeline to save money given big squad rebuild needed in summer we would struggle to have a team to put out in early July having said that would be great experience for the under 20s

That's a tough timetable if we have anybody playing in the World Cup Final on 13th July.

Though the gap might seem long, it is not that long and normal practice for world cup/euro champs years (in bold). Dates are for last and first SPL games:-

    Season 2012/13 ended 18th May 2013, next season started 3rd August 2013.

    Season 2011/12 ended 12th May 2012, next season started 4th August 2012.

    Season 2010/11 ended 14th May 2011, next season started 23rd July 2011.

    Season 2009/0 ended 9th May 2010, next season started 14th August 2010.

    Season 2008/9 ended 24th May 2009, next season started 15th August 2009.

    Season 2007/8 ended 22nd May 2008, next season started 9th August 2008.

    Season 2006/7 ended 20th May 2007, next season started 6th August 2007.

Seems the break is about right in length for a year with an international tourney and most seasons have a break of about 3 months give or take a week either side of that. The break in 2011 seemed really short but have no idea why that was. A half hearted attempt at trialling summer football maybe.
