Last time we picked a gem from scottish lower leagues?

Was thinking after the thread on youngsters past and present who was the last player we picked up from the Scottish lower leagues that was a success?

Were East Fife not in the First Division (as in the top league) at the time?

No. A league or two below us when they emptied us out the cup in 84. Not a top league side since the early 70s I reckon.

Although Leigh came to us on loan from Wolves most of his prior experience was in the Scottish lower leagues. Slightly off topic but Snodgrass, Dorrans, Hoolahan all went from Livi & are now in Premiership. Dundee Utd have probably been most successful club at identifying lower league talent with Andrew Robertson their latest star. Hurts to say it but Yams did ok with Webster, Weir & McCann. Perhaps Cairney will do it for us.

Iirc, hartley broke through at raith rovers, got a move to Coventry that didn't work out, then we signed him from there....although it's there to be corrected

IIRC Hartley came direct from Raith after a year or so at Millwall. I mind him being mooted as the next big thing, and possibly could have been wi us. Sadly not to be.

We signed Crawford from Millwall for about £400,000 iirc.

We signed Hartley from Raith as well for £250,000.

Am i right in thinking Hartley was on Hibs books as a youth a fair few years before we signed him from Raith?

Don't think so. Thought he was at Hamilton and got a move down south before Raith (think Millwall) then us.

    Could be wrong though.

Hartley was Raith. Crawford came to us from Millwall IIRC.

Knew you were a big fan mate, so expected I would hear from you! It is true that Neil was at the point of giving up football and becoming a long distance lorry driver. Hibs went in for him and the rest is history.
