Sky Sports News is reporting that West Bromwich Albion striker Nicolas Anelka has walked out on the club, announcing he will retire with immediate effect.
The Tweet from @skysportsnews said: “West Brom’s Nicolas Anelka walks out of training and tells staff he is retiring #SSN.”
The 34 year old signed with West Brom on July 4th after agreeing to return to the Premier League on a one year deal that included an option for a further year in the club’s favor.
Anelka arrived at The Hawthorns a free agent after leaving Italian champions Juventus at the end of last season where he completed the course of a five month contract. Upon signing, the French international was welcomed with open arms by Baggies boss, Steve Clarke, who called Anelka “a great boost for everyone at the club.”
A week ago, Clarke spoke at length of how he expected Anelka to shed his “Le Sulk” tag.
“There is no downside with Nicolas,” said Clarke. “I find him a very engaging character and good person. He has been great in the group here. He has come in here and is already a favourite. He is a good person.
“He wanted to come back to England to play. He felt he still had enough left in his body to produce in the Premier League and has still got the hunger to score in the Premier League.”
When questioned about Anelka’s hunger and desire, as a 34 year old, to continue playing professional football, Clarke was adamant. “He is up for it. If he wasn’t up for it, he would have chosen to go somewhere else for an easier life and still pick up decent money. Everyone keeps knocking on about his age, but he is the fittest 34-year-old I have seen. He is a fabulous athlete.”
The Baggies boss started Anelka alongside striker Shane Long in West Brom’s 1-0 loss to Southampton last weekend. The match didn’t turn out according to plan for Anelka, who endured a frustrating debut and was substituted seven minutes from time.
As of now, there is no word on a specific reason or event that prompted Anelka’s decision to walk off the pitch and retire.
Anelka remains one of the biggest enigmas in world football.
In January 2012 he signed with Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua for a reported annual salary of $16 million (€12m). That stint proved calamitous after Anelka reportedly refused to bow in front of his side’s traveling fans and teammates, as is customary in China.
Before that he spent time with five other Premier League clubs, Arsenal (1997-99), Liverpool (2001-02, loan), Manchester City (2002-05), Bolton Wanderers (2006-08) and Chelsea (2008-12).

Maybe Rod will be tempted to make him an offer. He'll invite him to our Training Ground, that'll clinch the deal!

Steve Clarke, eh? Glad we dodged that bullet...

The Aaron Ramsey curse strikes again.

    Anelka's agent dies
West Brom released a short statement saying; "West Bromwich Albion can confirm that Nicolas Anelka will not be involved in Saturday’s game at Everton. The club have excused the striker from club duty on compassionate grounds."

It says in one of the linked articles that the guy who died was Eric Manasse.

Was he not the guy who was quite good mates with McLeish and helped bring some players to Hibs about that time? Possibly including Le God?

Eh? How is Anelka being vilified for that one? He's been granted leave to pay respects after his agent (who he's pals with) died. Hardly massively unprofessional?

You can't take that out someone.

doubt the fine will hit his bank account hard either.

Anelka has to go on an education course for an anti-Semitic gesture, but John Terry doesn't for racist remarks?

Not sacked, walked out and tweeted he was terminating his contract of which the club had no knowledge. That was the story earlier on SSN with a statement from WBA.

I have just read it, covering themselves legally by the looks of it by reacting to him declaring he has terminated his own contract. Well rid of him, though I never realised he was 13th in the list of top goal scorers in the premiership.

The boy's an absolute arse. Can't see him getting another club at any kind of level, surely?

Football's a better place without the likes of Anelka. Has behaved liked a spoilt brat his whole career. Hopefully seen the back of him for good.

I don't think anyone who makes anti-semetic gestures and refuses to acknowledge the offence caused or apologise to anybody is really the type of player that should be associated with our club.

When hearts exit admin then they can sign him as he'd fit right in. Saying that, he's black and knows people with muslimy names so maybe he won't.

80,000 a week he was on,staggering amount of money.
another team will pick him up,probably in his home land.
decent player, and imo this whole thing blown out of proportion, not like he has bead butted another player or spat on someone
all my opinion of course !
