We had a ****** stadium and a fantastic team, now it is the other way round and Malmo have exacted sweet revenge. How on earth did it come to this?

I did not go tonight expecting us to win, after all they are well into their season. However that team tonight were a disgrace to the shirts and never looked as if they even wanted to win. At least Lawrie Reilly did not have to witness that performance.

We didn`t even make top 10 in 18-team league the season we beat Malmo . Very different times .

I did not go tonight expecting us to win, after all they are well into their season. However that team tonight were a disgrace to the shirts and never looked as if they even wanted to win. At least Lawrie Reilly did not have to witness that performance.

We still had some great players that season but a relatively poor team compared to what had gone on before and what was to come.

Gordon Marshall, Chris Shevlane, Erich Schaedler, Pat Stanton, Jim Black, Willie McEwan, Joe McBride, Alex Cropley, Arthur Duncan, Jim Blair and Johnny Hamilton. The subs were John Brownlie, Thompson Allan, Johnny Graham, Jimmy O’Rourke and Mervyn Jones.

In the previous eight months we had lost Peter Marinello and Peter Cormack, two exceptional players for us at the time. Chris Shevlane had been a great servant, but was coming to the end of his time; Bobby Duncan had never fully recovered from his leg brake, from John Hughes of Celtic.

Shades hadn’t quite established himself as left back at the time, he would often share the role with Jones and Billy McEwan and it wasn’t until the following season that Arthur Duncan’s Hibs career really took off. Jim Blair was an expensive flop, as a replacement for Peter Cormack and was sold back to St Mirren at the end of the season for 18k, representing a big loss from the 45k Hibs paid for him at the start of that season.

Although the bulk of the tornadoes were in situ, waiting to develop and come through, that was overall a poor season. We put out the Portuguese, Guimaries, in the next round and then got beat 3-0 on aggregate by Liverpool around Xmas time, around the same time Joe McBride was axed by Tom Hart and Willie Mac resigned in disgust.

The highlights of that season was beating Celtic with two Joe McBride goals, in the first game of Tom Hart’s reign, Joe Baker’s scoring return against a flying Aberdeen in Jan, 71 & losing the Semi reply against Rangers, after Dave Ewing hit the headlines calling Rangers Rubbish, immediately after the goalless first semi.

We may have been poor for a lot of that season, but we never got humiliated in Europe like our modern teams have.
