Just finished this book and knew I would like it after the second paragraph.
"Defeat can be accidental, unlucky, honourable - even against impossible odds; but in football seven goals to nil, at home, can never be anything but amaranthine (*) humiliation."
However, it proved to be a great read following the ambitions of Drumsagart Thistle in their pursuit of "the Grail", i.e. the Scottish Junior Cup. This too struck a resonance as we strive to bring home our own particular "Grail" !!
Worth a read for the above alone but also gives a fascinating insight into small town Scottish society of the 1950's and the rôle of football within that society.
* - Yes, I had to look it up as well, defined as undying / unending.
