Brightest Star/Planet in the sky tonight

If you look north West from Edinburgh there is a very bright object low down in the sky .

    Is this Jupiter ?

Can any of our resident stargazers confirm this ?

Also , is that Mars in the sky tonight too ?

    Cheers

According to my Google Sky Map, it is indeed Jupiter. The one just above it is Venus.

Right , well we have a problem as i can't see anything above the one i am looking at

Should Venus not be brighter than Jupiter at this moment ?

    Apologies.

The map tells me that Jupiter is below the horizon at the moment. Or, behind the houses over there.

What I am seeing, in the North West sky, is Venus.

    And the Moon.

Cheers , i was starting to think it was Venus. For some reason i expected Jupiter to be brighter than Venus but it seems not.

It crossed my mind that it might be the space station.

It would have to be a massive satellite mate
I see satellites all the time. Noticed my first a few years ago moving slowly across the sky . I've seen a few since. They are tiny though so there is no way that bright star/planet was a satellite .

I've not spent so long staring at the sky since my LSD days

My wife bought me a telescope for my birthday years and years ago (i know i know most folk get a BJ or a nut numnum) and i just picked a random "star" in the sky and pointed my telescope at it. It turned out to be Saturn
The funny thing was , i was looking at it for about half an hour out of focus without knowing what it was. I then changed the lenses that came with it and there it was in all its glory. I was humbled.

I went straight through and woke up the wife and made her look at it as she had bought the ****** .

SG, you should get the Google Sky Map.

I'm totally clueless about the stars, but the GSM has made me a real star-bore.

How's the Space Station visible to the naked eye? How big is it!?

If you'd only renewed your PM you'd have known weeks ago

Jupiter & Venus are pretty close together at the moment. Venus is the brighter one but with a decent telescope Jupiter is the more interesting one to look at. If you're lucky you can actually see some of its moons.

There's some telescopes on ebay - I'm still not sure what I should be buying though but I'm definitely investing in a decent one soon.

Google Sky Map is an excellent app
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, vodka in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming, "WOO HOO what a ride!"
