I actually think Rankin could do a good job at LB. He might not win a lot in the air, but he'd put himself about a bit and has the engine to get up and down that side. Miller isn't influential getting forward anymore so he could sit and allow De Graaf to do what he was doing on Thursday, trying to link up with the forwards. Wotherspoon and Galbraith will apply some much needed width and will actually attempt to run with the ball.

As it stands, this is my team for the start of the season

    GK Stack or Brown
    RB Hart
    CH Stephens
    CH Bamba
LB Murray (though I have to say I'm intrigued with the idea of Rankin at left back, I could see that working!)
    RM De Graaf
    CM Miller
    CM McBride
    LM Galbraith
    CF Stokes
    CF Riordan

Play with width, with De Graaf and Galbraith responsible for creating chances for the two best goalscorers in the SPL. McBride sitting back and Miller having the remit to get forward.

Full backs to push up as much as possible.

Why have you got De Graaf there? He was right midfield at his last club. Just wondering.

I have been saying for a long time that Rankin should play left back if he plays at all. However I think that Galbraith could do the job there in the same way that Wotherspoon did last year at right back, it is not his natural position but he is naturally left sided, has plenty pace and having been at Man Utd for a couple of years you know he's been coached well and is now burting to get a chance in the first team.

I'm surprised that a lot of people are not listing Bamba & DeGraaf in their sides, as far as I could see they were our best players on Thursday night and if fit and available should play.

This is assuming we sign no new players before then, if Murray is suspended then Hanlon at LB.

To all those picking Stephens, on what are you basing this on? He looked like Bambi on ice against the mighty Carlisle. Hanlon is a far better option and is vastly under rated on this board.

IIRC is Murray not suspended for the first game or so?

    Anyway...

    Brown
    Hart Bamba Hanlon Murray(?)
    Wotherspoon Miller McBride
    De Graaf
    Stokes Riordan

Subs: Smith, Hogg, Stevenson, Nish, Thicot, Galbraith, Rankin (subs bench doesnt fill me with confidence about trying to change a game!!!)...

I know yogi won't play bamba in midfield but i would go 4-4-2. Right to left. Brown. Hart, thicot, hanlon, murray. De graaf, bamba, miller, galbraith. Stokes and Riordan. I'd have murray sitting a bit more instead of trying to bomb on and galbraith playing as an out and out winger. Stokes on the last man and deeks with a bit more licence to roam. Bench. Stack. Hogg and stephens as cover for centre half. Nish for up front. Wotherspoon can cover midfield and right back if needed. Quite a few versatile players that can cover all over the park between them. Edit, just read murray is suspended. Would play Hogg and ask hanlon to do a job just until murray was back.

Went with Stephens so we'd have Bamba as the left centre-half, and Stephens on the right.

To those who would have Rank(in) at left back - Why?

Surely a full back needs to be able to tackle and in nearly 2 full season of watching him the closest he's came to a tackle is falling over!!

I know Murray lacks pace but if the team defend properly and not leave Murray isolated I think he'll have a good season..

Plus, he's the best if not only tackler in the team!!

I like the look of Stephens, although to be fair i have not seen a lot of him. Mind you, i have seen enough of Hogg.

IMO our strongest team. Leaving out Murray was tough, but I his lack of pace cost him a place in my team. For me, zemmama would come back in instead of Wotherspoon when fit. Thought about Stephens, but can't put an 18yr old centre half straight into the starting 11 with no experience of the SPL.

Cant agree. Im not a fan of Hanlon, I think he's poor in the air and as a centre half Id say a major pre-requisite is being able to head the ball well.
I dont think the lads a particularly bad footballer and reckon he still has potential but Id have Stephens before him at centre half every time.

Would one of his previous managers who played him at right midfield not have noticed that?
