    Favourite World Cup Goals

I'm only 15 so i can only go by WC's in 2002 and 2006 as these are the only two i watched, can't remember WC 98 very well despite my Dad telling me i watched all the Scotland games, anyway...

I'd say Maxi Rodriguez's goal against Mexico at WC 2006..

Bergkamp scored an absolute stunner v Argentina in 1998. I was watching with one of the worst hangovers in modern times but I'm pretty sure it was class.

    Bergkamp v Argentina 1998.

YouTube - Dennis Bergkamp Holland vs Argentina Goal

The individual skill to control that pass, cut inside the defender and then finish with the outside of the boot is unreal. Most players could only dream of doing something like that. Sheer class.

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, vodka in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming, "WOO HOO what a ride!"

For me, the Carlos Alberto goal is the best goal ever, beats Maradona's. What a goal to score in a World Cup Final, just taking the piss out of the Italians.

One of my other favourites, the famous toe poke.

That was the first one I thought of .

The brilliantest ever World Cup team were Brazil 1982 though (FACT!!! )

And the game against Italy was the brilliantest ever (again, FACT!!! ).

Socrates' goal (3:15) for Brazil in that game is my favourite - he and Zico slice through what wasn't just the best defence at that tournament but arguably one of the great all-time international back fives. And the coolest of finishes from a tight, tight angle...

    YouTube - Brasil 1982 - The 11 Greatest Goals of Brasil 1982's Magic 11

The classiest is probably the last one though- Eder (4:56)against the USSR. Sheer Brazilness

Just a thought, probably quite a few might disagree, but it's just my opinion for what it's worth. The Brazil side of 1982 scored some of the best goals I've ever seen anywhere. They were just more enjoyable than any other team to watch that I can think of in any other World Cup. Although Italy played brilliantly to win that World Cup, I just think that that kind of unique entertainment died when Brazil didn't win that tournament. Nowadays many of us have Satellite TV, the Internet and so on, we kind of know what to expect when the South American teams play now, and a lot of the players play in Europe in any case. The novelty that was Brazil no longer exists, although they are probably still the best side in the world.

Cambiasso scored a peach for Argentina after a 25 or so passing move. Nothing beats this.

On yer bus with a lot of that.

Brazil team of 82 was the best team I have ever seen playing in a WC. Italy played brilliantly to win it [who can forget Tardelli running away after scoring in the final] but for me their game against Brazil was indeed the epitomy of everything good about the WC. Great classic game with great goals.

YouTube - Brazil v Italy 1982 World Cup - One of the greatest games (and commentaries) of all time

Brazil seemed to have about 18 forwards in each game in that WC though - scary!

In no particular order, here are some more for your consideration:

YouTube - Matthaus - World Cup 90 W.Germany vs Yugoslavia

YouTube - 1986 World Cup JOSIMAR v Northern Ireland

    YouTube - King Hagi

These aren't my favourites as I think that Bergkamp's, Maradona's 2nd v England and Archie Gemmill's are the best ever scored at the WC. Just thought these might bring back some memories for some.

My favourite goal from that game was the very first, Rossis in the opening 5 minutes. Unfortunately every clip on youtube only shows the buildup from the halfway line; in fact an Italian defender intercepts it on his own byeline, every pass is insightful and its just the ultimate team goal. Very similar to Argentinas 20-odd pass move from the last world cup but with the added bonus of a great old-skool cross and header. Often forgotten in the '82 was the best brasil side ever' ****-fest that sometimes goes on
