Dr Hugh Whyte

Sadly passed away on Sunday.

Was with Hibs between 1974 – 1976, although I cant remember him at the club or of him speaking about it, before moving to Dunfermline where he became a bit of a goalkeeping legend, club doctor and involved in just about everything even up till recently with their former players.

I worked with Hugh a few years ago and my memories will be of a man with a permanent smile on his face, always willing to be helpful and an all round good guy.

Even if I cant remember his time at Hibs he was a genuinely nice person to know.

I knew Hugh from University days and played against him for the Uni in the East of Scotland League when he was playing for what was known as Hibs Colts (Hibs official 3rd team mainly for the younger players on their way to the 1st team) in those days run by Stan Vincent!

His wife was actually in my class at Uni way back then!

Lovely guy Hugh and he will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him not least his family!

My thoughts to them particularly at what will be a difficult time for them!

The Whyte family have been close family friends for decades through my parents work.

Him and his wife were great company and conversation at dinner parties etc.

I'm pretty gutted about this, but my mum even more so.

Hugh played in a Scottish cup tie at Easter Road mid 70's against Celtic. I think we lost 2-0.

I'm gutted to hear this sad news. Hugh was in the next room to me at Pollock Halls at University, and as other posters have said, was the nicest guy you could meet. Despite playing quite a few games for Hibs while a student, there was no side to him at all and he happily got autographs for us, and even joined in our kick abouts in the park.

I remember his first game for the first team - the guys in the corridor festooned his room with yards of paper and balloons and stuff with things like Hugh-bernian etc scrawled on them - he got a huge cheer whern he got in that night and treated us all to drinks.

I hated watching the games when he was in goal - I just got too nervous for him. He eventually left Hibs to join the Pars because he wanted to continue with medicine rather than go full time. He has the Pars record for most goalie appearances and was club doctor for years.

God rest you, big man.

I remember kick abouts at the pollock halls as a kid when Hugh would join in.
Always had time for everyone - another sad loss for the hibee family.
