Question Date for a Hibs vs Villa game?

I've come across this match report

I had it down as 17th Sep 1908. I think that is totally wrong can anyone help?

You're correct D. - that is totally wrong

The game was played on 1-1-1887

Have never heard Aston Villa described as "the Brutus" before. Anyone know how they got that nickname, and is it one that present day fans are familiar with?

ps I note that Groves was playing for Hibs, so that would make it pre-1888, also there is a counter attraction described at Powderhall (new year sprint?), so 1-1-1887 sounds right.

Not necessarily FR as Willie Groves had two spells at the club, either side of being bribed, erm I mean enticed to join Celtic.

As ever hibbybrian is on the money re the match report

Edit: Cue Mr Regan's strong denial re the Groves move

Celtc were set up as a purely charitable organisation and would never have stooped so low, dontcha know

In fairness to Mr Regan (did I just say that?), he has actually admitted to the uncharitable goings on of Celtc in times past. Although quite when he finally admits to his Soap allergy I couldn't possibly speculate

I have absolutely no idea how it ended up as a game in 1908 with only the first half of the game!

There was a whole bunch of trouble at the end of the match.

Nope, I'm stone cold sober but can't read it either. But in my defence, I'm an old fart, so probably got bad eyesight.

Hibs have played Villa 11 times over the years and we don't have the best of records against them.

    01/01/1887 Home lost 3-8
(could have been 3-11 if 3 goals had not been disallowed)
    09/04/1887 Away lost 0-3
    04/04/1896 Away won 2-1
    18/04/1896 Home lost 2-5
    30/11/1914 Away lost 3-8 (again)
    30/11/1949 Away Lost 2-5
    30/11/1968 Home Lost 1-4
    20/10/1969 Home Lost 1-4
05/08/1989 Away (does anyone remember this game or the score?)
14/10/1991 Home Won 4-2 (Alan Sneddon testimonial)
    30/11/1991 Home Lost 0-1

It would certainly make more sense, I can see it now.

    |We lost 1-0 - don't know much more other than to say Mickey Weir and Billy Findlay apparently played very well
