Smile Hibs hold record for league goals per game

I answered a query on JKB regards Hearts record breaking 132 goals in 1957-58.

I then did a query on league goals per game across the UK. I was surprised to find that Hibs have the top 2 highest ratio goals per game in the UK; in their first 2 seaons in 'Division 2' . With 5.11... and 4.611...

Rangers are the best 'Top division' side with the all conquering 1898-99 team.

The side in 1893-94 were refused 'election' to 'Division 1'.

    Of the top 20
The majority (14) were in the 1890s

there are only 3 post WWII sides

Many thanks for making this particular point.

I posted some time ago with a refusal to accept that Hearts had won 4 top league titles and making the point that the correct figure is 3.

My argument is, that Hearts effectively invited themselves to play in the top league and voted to refuse a rampant Hibs side entry. Naturally the admission of Hibs to this league would have threatened Hearts title hopes in the 1893-94 season.

It is not a valid competition, when you decide who does and who doesn't play in it.

I know that Hibs were invited to play in the first European Cup, but the difference is that we were invited by the top European Authority of the time, with the cooperation of teams like Real Madrid.

As far as I am concerned Hibs have won 4 legitimate league titles and Hearts 3. As a matter of interest, excluding Hibs first foray into Europe, we still have a better European Record than Hearts.

Elections were still taking place when Hibs won the title in 1903.

Hibs were 'invited' by the SFA 2 or 3 further times into Fairs City Cup when they did not deserve it on 'merit'. Hearts also benefited from this once.

Kilmarnock being the main team to miss out.

Hearts missed out in 1970 when the 'one team per city' rule meant their 4th place was irrelevant because Hibs finished 3rd.

Interesting stuff as always - what about peaks and troughs (ie. you've given us the highs what about he lows)?

Also do you have any records on Hibs penalty records? In 100 years of Hibs it states that ET was the Penalty King just wondered what that translated to in terms of goals/convesion rate - but reckon such stats probably dont exist...

I've got them for Derbies up to 1950 and then from 1996 onwards.
