    Prem/championship

Someone had started a competition for final league positions in the SPL and it had many different views and opinions

So I thought I would see wat people are thinking for the Premiership and Championship.

For once I'd say the Premiership is really hard to call this year. I think it will be down to the wire with Chelsea and Man Utd for the title, with Arsenal, Man City and Liverpool battling for the last 2 CL places. I still stand by my thoughts that Liverpool will do a lot worse than last year.

I would expect Everton and Aston Villa to fight for 6th and 7th, despite their poor starts, Tottenham and West Ham top half. Relegation will be from any of Wolves, Portsmouth, Burnley, Birmingham, Stoke and Hull I would think, but really a bad run for anyone in the bottom half could go down.

    Almost same as my thoughts:

Man U [Can't see past their strength in depth]
Chelsea [although I think they'll run Man U close]
Arsenal [think Wenger will have them stronger than last year]
Liverpool [don't think they'll get as close as they did last year]
Everton [lots writing them off - not me - think they'll close gap on L'pool]
Spurs [Harry will get them gelled and delivering more]

Hard to say from there on in...

    Championship:
West Brom, Cardiff, Ipswich - perm any 1 of those to win it
    Newcastle/Boro - challenging for play-off's
    Anyone's guess really

    League 1:

Dirty Leeds United by a country mile!

    SPL:

    Rangers
    Celtic
Hate to say it but 'that lot'...
    Us
    Aberdeen
    United
    ...

Really? I think they actually have a very decent first XI, enough to achieve mid table at least:

    __________Jaaskelainen

    Ricketts___Cahill___Knight___Robinson

    _____Davis___Muamba___McCann

    Elmander______Davies________Taylor

GK: Jaaskelainen has shown over the last 5 or 6 seasons that not only is he a class keeper, but he is one of the best in the league, and Goalkeepers generally get better with age...

FBs: Robinson has a great mental strength, and although neither of these have bags of pace, they both deliver a decent ball and are very solid defensively. Both also have very big throws which are very helpful for Bolton with their style of football.

CBs: A very good partnership, Knight is very dominant in the air, and is actually a pretty good all rounder, and Cahill is class, there is a lot of talk of him making the WC squad for England, a very clever and consistent player.

Midfield: Muamba was fantastic in the u21 tournament in the summer, and is a fantastic athlete, a very good defensive midfielder who makes very few mistakes. Davis is a very astute signing and is a good box to box midfielder who again is a consistent performer. McCann is getting on a bit, and is a limited player, defenitatley the weak link in the team.

Attack: We saw last year that Davies, when playing the long ball style of Bolton, is a very good target man who will not only do well for the team, but score goals. Elmander has the talent and in his second season should be a good player after adapting, he does need a bit of luck with injuries. Taylor has a very good left foot, and offers a good shot and cross in attack, and has a very good work rate in defense.

Overall, i think that their home form alone will help them stay up, and if they can put a run together they could be comfortabley mid table. Their squad size is questionable, but in terms of their XI, they have a decent team, far better than some other teams in the league.

I don't think much of them, but really you could make a case for about 10 teams to end up in a relegation fight, such is the standard of most EPL teams. My feeling for Bolton is that they are probably a bit stronger than some of the others and have experience, so I don't see them going down.

Going to take a punt on Arsenal, flawed as the logic is. I think Man U have had there day and will go into decline, particularly when Fergie calls it a day. Whatever they say about money being available, the Glazer's expect sales from players like Ronaldo to sub their £700 m purchase of the club.

Liverpool are a nothing club who won't finish in the top four this season. Gerrard is past his peak and will decline sharply over the next two seasons. Alonso will be a big miss. Two seasons outside the CL will send them into a financial tailspin, I predict a Leeds/Newcastle scenario.

It leaves the big spenders of Chelsea and City. A lot depends on whether Abramovic is willing/able to bankroll a costly rebuild of this aging team for a second time, and to the same extent. I doubt it.

This leaves City, in the best long-term shape of all. A top four place will see them start to challenge the likes of Real Madrid in the transfer market.

Expect a strong showing from Spurs - I think they'll finish above Liverpool.

    So:

    1. Arsenal
    2. Chelsea
    3. Man City
    4. Man United

    5. Spurs
    6. Liverpool

I would find it much easier to agree with people regarding Arsenal if they had bought someone for the defensive midfield role that has been severely missed since flamini left. History of late has shown us that a player that is dominant in midfield is crucial if you are to win titles, see Mikel, Makelele, mascherano, Fletcher, cambiasso, toure yaya etc. On their books currently they have Song, Diaby and Denilson to partner Cesc, none of which fit the def mid role described above.

I also doubt their ability to play without a target man in the team, with the absence of Adebayor, they are left with Vela, Eduardo, Van Persie, Walcott, Arshavin who are all technically very good players, but away to the likes of Stoke and Birmingham I really think they will struggle as IMO Bendtner isn't up to it for a title winning team.

Another area they will struggle for me is Cb. On their books at the minute they have the probable partnership of Vermaelen and Gallas, with Song, Senderos, Djourou and the possible signing of Hangelaand. The starting partnership really lacks ariel prowess which may be ok if there is height elsewhere in the team, but there isn't. In comparison tontheir rivals who have he likes of Skrtel, Agger, Carragger, Ferdinand, Vidic, Terry, Carvalho and others, Arsenal really are bottom of the pile IMO.

Fletcher crucial to Man Utd winning the league? You're having a giraffe!

    Premiership:

    Chelsea
    Manchester United
    Arsenal
    Manchester City
    Liverpool
    Tottenham
    Fulham
    Everton
    West Ham
    Aston Villa
    Blackburn Rovers
    Burnley
    Stoke City
    Bolton
    Hull City
    Sunderland
    Birmingham
    Portsmouth
    Wigan
    Wolves

I don't really follow the Championship enough to say, though I've watched Boro' twice so far this season and they look pretty decent!
Madness, as you know, is a lot like gravity. All it takes is a little push.

Portsmouth will really struggle this year I feel. Man City could provide with some high scoring games throughout the season. I dont think they will have enough to break the big 4, THIS YEAR. My team, Everton, are gonna struggle compared to last season.

Fletcher gives a great service to the United Team whenever he plays, his enthusiasm, stamina and awareness on the pitch is world class for United, and his willingness to do the nitty gritty work on the pitch allows the likes of Berbatov and Nani to worry about their own attacking games. Of coarse its not just Fletcher that does this, Carrick also plays a somewhat sitting midfield role, however he plays more of a passing and creative role from in front of the back four. Hargreaves is a fantastic sitting midfielder that can also break forward, but his injury problems have ensured that Fletcher is an essential part of the Man Utd team.

Just because he is often absent and transparent on the pitch for the national team, you cannot question the job that he does for his club most weeks...
