I see the SFA did their best to help the grieving process.
On January 3rd, the day of James Main’s funeral, Hibs were scheduled to play Morton at Easter Road so not unnaturally Dan McMichael asked the SFA to postpone the game. They refused but thankfully Morton agreed to a late morning kick off time so that the Hibs players and officials could attend the funeral of their friend and colleague. Hibs beat Morton 2-1, dedicating the result to James Main before they all congregated at West Calder cemetery where the player was laid to rest. A beautiful granite memorial stone marks the grave of this fine young man whose life ended so tragically when he was only 23 years old.

Given that this Christmas will be the 100 year anniversary of James Main dying after injuries received while playing for the Hibees, personally think it would be a nice touch if the club commemorated it in some way. Maybe a decent write up in the nearest home programme or possibly a strip with a special badge on it. Maybe get someone to try and trace some of the guys relatives who could be brought on the pitch at some point. Would be a nice touch IMO.

3rd Round Cup tie at the beginning of January? No silence or anything - just a proper mention in the program and the special strip.
Or the nearest League match to Christmas.

Oh my god...
1908 - Frank Levick - Sheffield United
Death caused by blocking a shot. The ball struck him below the waist, forcing his testicles to become lodged in his abdomen. This caused internal bleeding of the bowel and a subsequent cardiac arrest.

13 January 1889 William Cropper Staveley Suffered a ruptured bowel in a match for against Grimsby Town; died the next day.
I wonder if thats where the saying he became a Cropper came from??"You opened the box....and your soul belongs to me...."

For anyone interested here's a couple of pics of the memorial stone. No mention of Hibs on it.
Stands about 8 or nine feet high. Its actually only about a drive and a three wood from my house.

Should Davie Cooper not be included? He died while filming a training video?
There is a strange pattern to the number of deaths.
Not one recorded between 1936 and 1963 yet there seem to be three to four a year now.
I wonder what has caused the increase?
Training methods?
Higher pressure on players?

Was glad to be able to learn more about this Hibs player. Been trying to find out more about him as my son is called James Main!!
We now live in Lancashire but I'm originally from Lanarkshire, and our branch of the family at the turn of the century resided in Stonehaven, but I'm told we had relatives in Central Scotland at the time.
I agree it would be fitting for the club to commemorate the centenary of such a tragic early death.

Help Required - James Main - Hibs Historical Trust
Next month marks the 100th anniversary of the death of former Hibernian player James Main. Main died as a result of injuries received while playing for our club.
The Hibs Historical Trust are looking to mark the occasion accordingly. More details of this will revealed in due course.........
To assist with this, the Trust are attempting to contact any of Mains surviving relatives.
Is anybody on Hibs.net a relative of James Main? or able to point me in the right direction????
Any assistance with this would be gratefully received.
Please PM me if you can help.Last edited by Conrad Gray; 03-11-2009 at 05:00 PM.

From Register House you will be able to access the birth and death certificate of James Main. From that you will be able to trace parents and siblings and then track present day family from it. The electoral Register would then more than likely give contact details of present day family members...if any.
Am I right in saying that the 27th December is the 100 year point and the opponent was PartickThistle?

there is a reasonable amount of detail about James Main in I think volume 2 of the making of hibernian
I seem to remember it was against Partick Thistle and that he died at RIE from the complications of a perforated intestine
I am glad he is to have some memorial

From what I can gather, the injuries were inflicted at a game at Firhill on Christmas Day 1909 and he passed away on the 29th December 1909.
