I've managed people who are very good at their jobs, and whom I've got on with very well, but the team's overall performance dropped because everyone else was unhappy.
Unfortunately, in a work situation, it's harder to move people on so if they're not careful, the manager eventually gets the reputation of not caring or of having favourites.
