I wrap them around a rolled up newspaper leaving the plug showing. Makes it easier to unroll them next year and easy to test.

It depends on how I feel at the time. Last year, well this year to be exact as it was 2nd January, I separated the 8 different branch sizes of my tree into their own bag and didn't unfold the branches so it was easier to put together 11 months later.
