Exotic Hibs close season and mid-season tours

Aside from their many ties in European competition, Hibs have had some interesting and far-flung close season and mid-season trips down the years.

Those I'm aware of are:

Brazil 1953 Invited by the Brazilian FA to take part in a tournament involving teams from the home nation, Paraguay and Portugal. This was the tour where the Famous Five reportedly taught the Brazilians how to play and one of their teams tried to sign Gordon Smith and Lawrie Reilly.

USA and Canada 1967 We competed as Toronto City in a tournament organised by the United Soccer Association in a bid to popularise the forthcoming football league in the USA.

Israel 1979 A mid season trip during a severe cold snap in Scotland. Eddie Turnbull was keen to find warmer weather to train in and the team played a friendly with a Tel Aviv side.

Trinidad and Tobago 2001 Another January trip, where the squad had their eyes opened to what a superstar Russell Latapy was!

Anyone think of any other trips? I have a vague memory Hibs travelling to Seville in the 80s?

I know a lot of fans travelled to Trinidad and Tobago but I wonder if anyone was at any of the others? I'm guessing there would have been a number of ex-pats who took in some of the games during the American tour.

1979ish USA

There were quite a few European tours in the 40s and 50s 40s and 50s.Im convinced there was also a trip to Haiti in the 70s.

I remember the Israel trip. The squad also fitted in some sightseeing in Jerusalem and I recall the Evening News cartoonist Harry Gilzean drew a pic of some Hibs fans at the Wailing Wall praying for better results!

Hibs drew 1-1 with a Tel Aviv select. I actually met a lovely Israeli lad in London many years later who, when he heard I was a Hibs fan, said he had relatives who'd been at that game!

A good trip. Did anyone attend the non-tournament game on a Saturday morning against Oldham Athletic which was played on a pitch which had a few tents at the side of it?

Hibs were scheduled to return to the IOM the following year but it got cancelled due to the fear of trouble. I think Wolves and Cardiff were due to attend.

Got very excited when I saw this thread. Then left disappointed when I realised it said exotic and not erotic

To be honest be very disappointed if we weren’t going over to Ireland even for a short time ie 3/4 days ans a couple of games seeing it’s our big year and celebrating our anniversary and what that entails also be excellent for the fans both here and over there (we have a decent amount of hibbys from over the water in the motherland )won’t eat into our pre season with travel etc can still do overseas camp in Holland/germany like in the past cmon HFC you can do this Erin go Bragh :flag:

Hibernian were drawn in the Rio de Janeiro mini-league at the Maracanã Stadium against Botafogo, Fluminense, and Vasco da Gama.

I remember reading an interview with Pat Stanton about the tournament. Think Tommy Younger was possibly managing the 'real' Toronto team at the time, hence Hibs representing them.

They were over there for some crazy amount of time but did a lot of sightseeing and Stanton made a quip about them visiting San Quentin and Jimmy O'Rourke claiming to have spotted a couple of guys from Clermiston in the line-up of prisoners in chains that they saw being marched in!

South Morocco

Ireland- in the 70's we used to go there often for pre-season games.

It would be fitting to take the club over this summer, for at least one fixture.

We played a couple of games in California after promotion to Premier League in 1981 .
Seville was December 1986 a few months after we played Sevilla at home . Played quite a few friendlies in Spain , Portugal and Gibraltar ( 2013 ) since .
France - think we played in a pre season tournament in Brittany in about 2000 ( Sauzee connection ? ) .
Ireland - we regularly played pre season matches there in 1970s . Harder to find dates once league in Ireland became a summer competition .
Scotland - lots of matches against Highland League clubs in 70s and 80s with big travelling supports for Saturday matches v Caley or Thistle .
When Pat Stanton was manager we played a first team friendly on Lewis - 3 hour ferry from Ullapool for players and maybe fans too .

I remember reading Peter Marinello’s autobiography Fallen Idle and he stated that he lost his virginity in Nigeria 1968/69 in front of six of his teammates as well as being kidnapped by a knife wielding African tribe after a misunderstanding over a broken canoe his teammates had to have a whip roond for the ransom

Yes, Jim lost his place for a number of years, although whether he played no games at all might be difficult to find out.

When I started going regularly as a youngster about 77 onwards, Mike McDonald was the regular keeper. Jim must have won his place back about the time of that trip as he was certainly the keeper in the 1979 cup final a few months after that trip.

Jim McArthur an £8000 signing from Cowdenbeath in 1972 made 296 appearances

1976/77 and 1977/78 he made no appearances difficult to say if he was dropped ( ET could be unforgiving with out of form goalkeepers) or injured returning to the team 20/1/1979 in a 1-1 home draw versus Aberdeen his last appearance was a 0-3 loss away to Dundee United on 20/11/1982

He also played for Meadowbank Thistle Morton and Raith Rovers

That's interesting. I remember McDonald but when I started going regularly Jim was the established No 1. In my mind they alternated quite frequently but that doesn't appear to have been the case. McArthur I always thought of as quite a small keeper and McDonald as taller, more of a keeper's build. Definitely recall them both playing without gloves at least some of the time. Hard to imagine goalkeepers doing that now.

Trying to remember if anyone came after McArthur before we signed Alan Rough?

I think back then he'd simply have played for the reserves at the weekend if he wasn't in the first team? I remember that by and large the reserves would be at home against the same opponents the first team were playing away and vice versa. I definitely went to a few Saturday 3pm reserve games at ER when I was deemed too young by my parents to travel away!

My dad used to tell me that reserve games when he was a kid in the 50s got decent crowds. Fans didn't travel away as much back then and of course the calibre of the Hibs squad was very high, so you'd be watching some good players who simply couldn't dislodge the Famous Five!

My memory of Mike McDonald is he had this thing where he would run out kick both goal posts and touch the crossbar me and my mates used to call it the ‘ sign of the cross ‘ ��

Good goalkeeper played 150 games for us 49 shut outs

The mini Ireland trip around 2007-ish was good! Mind getting 1p return flights to Dublin with Ryanair - the good old days. Vague memories of drinking pre-match in a big hotel close to the Shamrock Rovers ground in Tallaght :party:

Went to a couple of pre seasons to Belfast. Cliftonville was an eye opener. Sure their stadium was called solitude or something. The anti-hun sentiment was ferocious lol. We even had an orange March going past our hotel. Interesting trip!!

Which keeper did you prefer? I'm guessing the fact McArthur signed in 1972 meant he started as back-up to Herriot. McDonald signed in 1976 so I'm guessing Turnbull was looking to replace McArthur.

There was a big Orange parade in Belfast that day. There was also a Republican march/protest in single file down the middle of the road near Solitude. It was an eye opening trip.

He won his spot back after the league cup semi final played at Dens Park on 13th December, 1978. Game went to extra time and Mike McDonald got lobbed by Stewart Kennedy who was way out on far side touchline. A Hibs director said McDonald would never play for Hibs again. He never did.

Hi Billy, I live in the Isle of Man but must have been away when hibs played. I don't recognise the pitch in the photos, it's not the bowl or peel ,so maybe looks like st johns ? It's got me confused :confused:. The story I got told was there was trouble with hibs fans and a rugby team in a hotel in Douglas and that's why hibs never got invited back, might be a load of crap maybe somebody might know if it's true ?

I remember going to Ireland way back in the 70’s.
Played Bohemians , Bangor and Waterford.
Went down to Wales for the ferry across to Dublin then buses and trains all over the place.

You could be right about it supposedly being behind closed doors but I found out about it as it was advertised on a blackboard on the front in Douglas. It involved getting a bus early as I think it kicked off at 10.30 as the IOM tournament final was played in the afternoon.

It was rumoured that the match wasn’t sanctioned by the English FA or SFA.

It might have been port Erin, that's a team called Rushen or even colby which is close by.I still can't believe hibs came to the isle of man and I never got to see them 😂

Hi Logie I've looked at the photos and I can't work out where it is,it was that long ago a lot of teams have new clubhouses.Im going to have to do some detective work ,just for my own sanity as it's really bugging me 😂

We had to stop the bus so a few of them could have a scrap with each other. They got back on bus then went to the game. Nuts. Seem to remember your good self doing quite well at the casino in Douglas...

It mentions during commentary we were flying Haiti for some friendlies right after this game. Turned out not to be friendlies at all iirc.

Also Cecil Graham makes a half time appearance for an interview and shows a very warped concept of Hibs formation.

Amazing that this exists! I have no recollection of Hibs playing this game. Surprised we shelled out on such a long-distance venture bearing in mind the state of the club at the time.

San Jose paid all expenses for the trip. It was like a transfer fee for Bestie being transferred to them.

There was Caribbean trip nailed on at the end . Unfortunately it was to Haiti.
