8 days of protests in Iran with people calling for regime change. Feels different and real with lots of younger women demanding change.
Hugely brave of them. Here's hoping another country can soon be free from tyranny.

Bit of a distraction for the Americans I suppose
I watched a video the other day of a guy from the Vice Squad slapping a young women. A few years ago that would have gone unchallenged. In this video a group of young people, predominantly men, chase him and set about him and despite him reaching for the pepper spray they completely overower him. I'm not condoning violence but it was satisfying to watch a bully get his comeuppance. It also suggests there is a real wind of change in the air.
One of my oldest friends is half Iranian, he lives in France but his Dad is still in Iran. The internet is being jammed so he is sharing a lot of stuff on behalf of his Dad; it's the real beauty of social media and the dark web. You just can't surpress it in the same way as the TV and print media.
It's wonderful to see some of the protests led by brave powerful women. Hopefully a wind of change all be it a few millenia too late, showing you can't just murder women with impunity.
These riots seem different to the ones before. I saw a video of the largest picture of Ali Khomeini in Tehran being burnt to the ground. As someone I read said, that seems like the rubicon has been crossed
The problem with democratic movements in countries with no history of democratic legitimacy is the despot is overthrown just for another despot to take his place, as we saw in the Arab Spring (already 10years ago!). Of course, the Iranians already had a revolution to depose their old autocratic ruler, the Shah in 1980 (79? Can’t remember), but the revolution was stolen from the progressive broadly liberal voices who started it, and was subsumed and then taken over by the islamists who are still there today. Iran really should have been the worlds first left leaning Muslim democracy. Young urban educated population. Hopefully something better will happen this time.

Hopefully the beginning of the end of another horrific regime who makes their own citizens suffer continuously. The days of these facist regimes are coming to an end.
If only that were true. Women and girls rights are routinely abused throughout the world, particularly in the Middle East. We’re hearing about Iran now because the people are fighting back but still horrendous conditions in many countries, including countries with which we have much better relations. Like Saudi Arabia, and a certain country where a certain sporting event is taking place next month. ‘Fascism’ is a hard word to define but there’s certainly more countries living under draconian rule now than at most times in the last 50 years.Quote:

Maybe tyrannical is more apt than facist, but I don’t think we need to worry too much about the definitions.
Either way, they’re evil regimes whose days should be numbered.
When they see Putin’s corpse, they’ll be looking over their own shoulders I’d imagine.
If it can happen in Iran, it can happen in any of these countries. It would be amazing if we saw all those regimes in the Middle East come crashing down, irrespective of the UKs relations with them.

I've seen both sided of the argument the last few days and I'd say newsweek and the guardian both have a point. I don't think anyone thinks they will line up all 15,000 that have been imprisoned for protesting and hang them. Protesters have burned down the house in which Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of Iran's Islamic Islamist regime, was born in.
The house, in the city of Khomein, has been a museum for the past 30 years.
The protests are increasing in strength.
Following it on TikTok (seems to be best source for this) and I really hope it’s different this time. The signs appear good. Iran has a very very young population and they appear to be growing in determination. I know what you mean, ie this would be the end of the regime but quite frankly I hope they don't find sanctuary and end up in jail in Iran for the rest of their lives. I think it’s going to have to be. Sadly.
Iran is very different to Russia in that it has a very young population. The chance of a full revolution is much bigger. There is no escape for young Iranians looking for freedom. They can’t head to the capitals of Europe like the Russians do. They are not white enough. So they will stay and fight. Let’s hope the are successful.
