Who would you choose? Is there anyone missing?
I'd probably go for James Maxwell. I was half expecting Archie Gemmill to be on the list :greengrin

Can anyone enlighten me as to why J K Rowling is nominated for greatest ever Scot?
She has lived in Scotland for just over 15 years, that doesn't make her Scottish. Alex Ferguson has lived in England for over 20 years, does that make him English?
No mention of Gordon Brown
Bruce or Burns for me.
Alexander Fleming for me. All I know about him is that he discovered penecillin, which has to be the biggest life-saving substance in history. Beyond that I know nowt about him, but to me that's enough.
Failing that, the only other name on the DR's list that can come close is Lulu. Her contribution to global literacy is enourmous, as every time she appears on TV, I switch off and read a book.
SCIENTISTS & ENGINEERS category
i'l be biased and go for a bathgate born man, sir james young simpson http://www.geo.ed.ac.uk/scotgaz/peop...usfirst60.html
imo :greengrin
do they take a winner from each category and have a final five up for vote ? imagine a foul-mouthed 'comedian' possibly ending up being voted the greatest scot ffs :bitchy::grr: either way, surely the overall winner must come from the scientist & engineering category :agree:
I'd swap Rowling for Sir Walter Scott whose many achievements should at least be acknowledged. James Hogg as well should be there but hey, what do I know?
I've been sat here for about 5 minutes shaking my head as to how some of the people on that list have been included at the expense of James Watt.
If you're not allergic to it :grr::greengrin
Being biased, I just can't see past Maxwell. He is up there with Newton and Einstein in terms of what he achieved. His work paved the way for Einstein's theory of relativity and helped form a new branch of physics, quantum mechanics. This paved the way to really deepen our understanding of the universe at the large and small scales, advancing man's knowledge.
Should be a close one though!
J.K. Rowling in the arts section but no James Kelman, Tom Leonard or Hugh MacDiarmid. Deary, deary me.
And no John Maclean or James Maxton. Pah...
Come on LH, the Diehard fils weren't that great:wink:
I don't see why we should choose a winner, choosing one individual from a already limited list does a great disservice to the history of our country. IMO we should be celebrating our heritage and the great people that have come from our country not just naming one person as the 'greatest'.
You're probably right. It just annoys me that there has to be an X-factor style winner of this program. Why should history have a winner!
One day I would like to see a program that doesn't need a 'winner' decided through premium rate phone lines or have the irritatingly pointless texts of viewers read out every 10 minutes:grr:
Rant over!!!
Tis nonsense....how can you compare or contrast the acheivements of someone like Rennie MacKintosh to Alex Ferguson to willima Wallace.....or take Hume over Smith when each added so much to our understanding of the world.
As Green Mikey says it's a rather daft concept that a Nation must have the greatest ever citizen competition but I would take it further.....if you need a competition or vote to decide who is the 'greatest' then clearly there has not been someone yet suited to such an accolde because if there was it would be obvious to all who is shall be!!
This is garbage.
No mention of James Watt, James Telfer, John Knox, Walter Scott, James Hogg, David Hume, John Duns Scotus, Andrew Fletcher of Saltoun, David Livingston, Hugh McDairmid, Sorley Maclean, John Paul Jones ....
Whoever drew up that list is a total ignoramus.
So desperate are they to get some women into the poll that they have included Ann Gloag, a rat-faced, sweat-shop capitalist and purveyor of shoody goods who would shoot people in the face before letting them on to 'her land', and JK Rowling, whose claim to fame is conning middle class brats into buying the same book seven times and isn't even Scottish. For vuck's sake they even mention Lulu at one point.
People's Choice - David Tennant
Sweet Jesus....
It's got to be Maxwell or Fleming.
Douglas Haig :duck:
Was he a Jambo?
Someone else who should be included :agree:
Thomas_Blake_Glover
The greatest scot should be William Wallace.
My girlfriends lad is to do a talk on great Scots in his P5 class. Kids got to pick names out a hat. Think he was wanting Wallace or Burns but ended up with James Galbraith. Don't think he's too enthused about his choice.
Smeato for me.
For the sake of accuracy it should be understood that Lulu is not listed among the ... ahem ... great Scots. She appears in the list of those who have not been short-listed. It appears we are to conclude that there are soooo many great Scots to choose from that-- incredibly -- there is just not space for the dubious cabaret act and Weegie bockle that is Lulu.
Among many other great Scots women who have been shamefully ignored are Bonnie Langford, Helen Liddell, Wendy Alexander, Mrs Doubtfire, Fran and Anna and Maisie the Morningside Cat. Oh! And Marie Curie. Who is as Scottish as JK Rowling.
Donald Findlay QC.
He'll defend anyone.
Diego Maradona :agree:
More seriously, Marie Stopes.
What about Elsie Inglis?
Eric Liddell (although born in China) should be in with a shout IMO.
Putting aside his "Chariots of Fire" olympic performances he was also an International egg chaser and a missionary. He is however probably more revered in China than here. An all round fantastic human being.
Tbf to you lads you haven't got many to chose from. Personally I think Wee Jimmy Kranky is the most impressive Scots man I've ever seen.
Gutted that Gary MacKay hasn't even been listed.
Vladimir Romanov for his services to Scottish football :agree:
No Sandy Clark either. They are truly having a laugh.
