17/3/2001 Scottish League SPL
Dunfermline 2 v 1 Hibernian
Murray
High flying HIBS were undone in a fascinating contrast of styles
HIBS had been hit hard by injuries and drafted in Mark Dempsie at Centre Back and Russell Latapy’s compatriot Lyndon Andrews who had performed so well in the 6-2 game
Hibs missed the lynchpin of Franck Sauzee and despite a goal from Ian Murray went down 1-2

Dundee United 1 v 0 Hibernian
I attended this game and I still remember vividly the huge travelling HIBS support and standing behind John Leslie in the queue waiting to get in singing ‘Hibeees here! Hibees there!’ It was also the day of the famous Grand Slam Calcutta Cup match at Murrayfield
Hibs started brightly and Brian Hamilton rattled the United crossbar from 20 yards in the ninth minute That was the closest HIBS came all afternoon as that old fox Jim McLean had recalled John Clark to shackle Houchy who never got a sniff and pushed Miodrag Krivokapic into midfield to stifle the threat from John Collins
The United tactics of playing the long ball from defence up to Mixu Paatelainen and Darren Jackson worked a treat when Jackson received a Freddy Van Der Hourn free kick in the box with his back to goal and somehow managed to scoop the ball over his shoulder into the roof of the net
After that it was Dundee United versus Andy Goram

Hibernian 3 v 1 Third Lanark
Johnstone
Turnbull
Ormond
HIBS were running away with the League but this was a strange game
Firstly Third Lanark had a throw in and Archie Buchanan ran in front of the taker and blocked the ball with his hands
The Referee asked the taker simply to retake the throw without taking action
HIBS then took the lead through a simple goal from Bobby Johnstone
HIBS were then awarded a freekick outside the box Archie Buchanan placed the ball down and East Fife were organising their defensive wall when Eddie Turnbull ran forward and hammered the ball into the net
The Referee allowed the goal to stand
Ex HIBS man ‘Cubby’ pulled one back for the volunteeers with five minutes to go to cause a few nervous moments
Willie Ormond eased the fans’ fears when he raced clear and buried the ball into the net with his trusty left foot

Hibernian 2 v 1 Rangers
Dunn 2
A big HIBS crowd turned out at Easter Road for this St Patrick’s Day clash against bitter rivals Rangers
There was a near riot when in the first minute of the game a Rangers cross glanced the crossbar and was cleared by the HIBS defence only for the Referee to award a goal
Things calmed down when Jimmy Dunn scored a beautiful goal to equalise five minutes later
Every HIBS player was a hero that day but Jimmy Dunn was a super-hero when with only ten minutes to go he crashed home an unstoppable winner
Well I woke me up this morning
To a great almighty roar
From the throats of trusty Hibee men
Twenty thousand strong
Sure it was the Hibernian brigade
Winding up to join the big parade
So I put on my bunnet
And the scarf I love so well
And I bought myself a shamrock
Just to wear in my lapel
Don’t you know that today’s March 17
It’s the day for the wearin’ o ‘ the green.
Oh it’s a great day for the Hibees
It’s a great day for the green
Sure the emeralds and the shamrocks are the order
Sure there’s not a finer team across the border
Oh it’s a great day for the Hibees
Oh their green flag’s flying high
Every Paddy Mac is singing
And the bells they all are ringing
It’s a great great day
Go tell the Rangers it’s a great great day
