Recent Restaurant Visits Reviews

Went to the Doric last night. It was a pre-theatre thing, had originally booked Field but they could only take us at 5:45 whereas the Doric was available from five, which allowed time for a more relaxed dinner.

I've been there a few times, though not for a couple of years, and most often with people from outside Edinburgh as it is very handy for the station and does a lot of 'traditional' Scottish dishes.

The service was keen and the food itself was very, very decent. We both had a mezze platter to start which was fairly simple but nevertheless very tasty. Mains were a clam linguine and a venison stew. Both were full of flavour and generously portioned. We both had the cheeseboard to finish and again, it was a big serving and well-balanced.

Prices are relatively reasonable for the centre of Edinburgh, decent wine list and an extensive beer list with links into the food menu.

The Doric is brilliant for food. They have been doing 'gastropub' since before it was a thing and are very good at it.

I really like both the Doric and the Hebrides in that neck of the woods. Both pretty no nonsense pubs and they do what they do well.

I'm in and out of Waverley a lot with work and the Doric is a natural resting place on the homeward-bound journey while waiting on my connection.

They've got a very decent wine list in the bar downstairs and a good range of beers. And as has been said, the food upstairs is top-notch.

I'm fond of the Hebrides, it's a good, couthy Edinburgh bar. Reminds me of the Captain's Bar on South College Street, both are small but have a reasonable choice of beers, albeit they are both very limited for wine :greengrin

I think the Doric and the Hebrides do well as 'proper' functioning Edinburgh pubs - they've got competition from a range of sources but they do what they do and it encourages you to go back.

In recent years I've found myself becoming far less dogmatic about what I drink and being more concerned with where I drink it; within reason of course.

I'd much prefer a decent pint of Tennents in a warm, old fashioned pub with efficient staff and punters who will say hello to you to a fancy sour in a hipster by numbers job with bare lightbulbs, red wiring and random graffiti served by a sullenstudent who doesn't want to be there. If you can find a gem that manages to marry the 2 and offer an excellent drinks choice and a traditional feel then all the better.

It's a good sign though.

I met up with a bunch of guys I used to go to ER and play Sunday football with, for the recent home game against Aberdeen. It was a good twenty years ago from our playing days. We met up pre-game in a bar that was our home from home in those days. It was still decent but painfully stylish and very much a hipster's playground. We ended up decamping to a place on the Walk that we had never been before, not really a football pub, but the atmosphere and ambience was tremendous. Ended up going back there after the match before going onwards.

Went to Molè Mexican in London at the weekend. We really nice and also reasonably priced. The crab tacos were outstanding.

Also went to Hawksmoor which is opening soon in Edinburgh. The beef dripping fries were very good, steak wise you’re better off at Chop House, Miller & Carter or even Cau.

Six by Nico on Hanover Street. Fantastic food.

We went to Hectors in Stockbridge for some drinks and grub pretty standard menu but the burger was excellent.

Mini pub crawl around the area what is it with people taking their dogs out with them on a Saturday night!

I like the area, but not the amount of dogs - especially in a dark bar, what's the point in that? Go take it for a walk or something.

One for the pet peeves thread, but when owners just let their dogs walk around and go up to other people then accompanying it with some guff like "He likes you" or "he won't bite". :rolleyes:

Yeah I like it also, the Raeburn was great as it was so hot and sunny cant beat drinking outside. While most dogs were on the leads there was a few scuffles with other dogs surely they can leave them home for a few hours but obviously they are some sort of status symbol now.

I like dogs so I don’t mind it, but I do think it’s something people shouldn’t be doing. If you don’t like dogs you shouldn’t have to put up with one coming over and jumping up on you, licking you, sniffing you etc.

The outdoor bit at the Raeburn is nice. The Antiquary is my favourite though - great food!

I don't mind them generally, I'd just rather they left me alone. My Girlfriend is extremely scared of them though. So if one does come up to us, I usually have to proactively get in the way and give it attention so it'll leave her alone. No idea what we'd do if I was scared of them too!

aye, went in once and once only. Came back from the bar and my missus accused me of farting and told me I was stinking. I then noticed it too, the smell was coming from my pint lol.

The customers were alright to be fair, needless to say my stella never got touched.

The Bow Bar is good. For connoisseurs of beer. Quite pricey but that keeps the neds out.

This. I have an extreme case of cynophobia (fear of dogs) and it is a right pain the arse when you go somewhere for a relaxing drink and there’s dogs coming up to you. You even get them in cafes and restaurants now too. Don’t get me started on shop owners that take their dogs to work with them. I’ll actively avoid places with that ridiculous red dogs welcome sign on their door.

I used to frequent the Dean in the 80’s. The team I played for, played their home games at Inverleith Park. Went to the Dean after the games

The Dean had quite a heavy reputation. The Rag Doll was OK. Then there was Shambles. Odd place.

More Inverness recommendations, having spent a week up there recently.

Aspendos - Turkish, lots of different deals. Generous portions and reasonably-priced. Service was decent, food was delicious and the bill was light on the wallet. Highlight was a starter of lightly-battered mussel skewers. I’m definitely going back next time I’m up.

The Rajah - as the name suggests, it’s Indian. It’s in a basement and their WiFi cuts in and out but other than that I couldn’t fault it. It was absolutely heaving on a Tuesday night and it looked like it was mostly locals, which tells its own story. I had been recommended it by a local and it was well worth the visit.

The River House - it’s small, maybe thirty covers, and it looks like an old-school pub on a corner block, but instead of the bar they have the kitchen open to public view. The chef/owner Alfie is incredibly friendly. Lots of fish dishes among the starters and mains. I had turbot for main and it was maybe the best plate of food I’ve eaten this year. I would heartily recommend this place and I will be back the first chance I get.

Rocpool - I have posted before about this place but it constantly impresses. Completely booked out the night I was there, which I suspect is the case for spring through to autumn. Not cheap but the service is great, the menu is luscious and the wine list is decently-priced and pretty extensive. As I think I posted before, their cheeseboard is all ewes’ milk, and they usually chuck on a guest cheese as a bonus. It’s tremendous.

Was massively dissapointed with the Boozy Cow last night. Id been a few years previously and thought it was very good, unless I got it on a bad night, it seems to have gone downhill massively. A dense and dry burger more fitted to pub meals straight out the microwave.

Was also at The Walnut at the weekend which I was very impressed with, scallops to start, pork belly as a main and sticky toffee pudding, good value at 3 courses for £25 for the quality you get

It's not. I don't like the pretentious, stuck-up, posh places you get in many parts.. but just because it's nice area doesn't mean Stockbridge falls into that category.

Always liked the Baillie (on the road down).

The Bailie and Kay's Bar are two of the finest pubs in the country.

The Antiquary definitely has sky. Not sure about the Raeburn though, they don’t even have TVs as far as I know? Unless we’re talking about what used to be The Raeburn on Dean Street rather than The Raeburn on Raeburn Place? The Raeburn on Dean Street has changed into a shan cocktail bar called Boston & Hawthorne, was in there a couple of weeks ago and there was only one person in.

Has anyone been to Fazenda? Going tonight, looking forward to it.

If you've been to viva Brazil in Glasgow then it's pretty much the same, the non-skewer buffet option is a bit more expansive, but the main show is obviously the meats.

Aye, and the food is pretty rubbish too, I mean who wants artisan meat pies when there's a perfectly good Greggs selling their sloppy fayre down at Stockbridge.

In all seriousness, this is one of the few pubs in town where I'll walk in from Corstorphine on a Sunday, maybe via the Water of Leith at Roseburn, buy a paper then sit down for a pint or two. Kay's were selling craft beers before they became popular with the bearded hipster hoi polloi!

Edited to add, and to get this thread back on track, the food seriously is VERY good here, traditional pub fayre and then some!

If you've been to viva Brazil in Glasgow then it's pretty much the same, the non-skewer buffet option is a bit more expansive, but the main show is obviously the meats.

Fazenda was decent. The novelty of eating steaks begins to wear off eventually though and I think I’d rather just spend the money in Chop House or the soon to open (possibly tomorrow?) Hawksmoor. I’m absolutely gubbed after it. I will say the chicken heart is ****ing rotten though :greengrin

Tried Miller and Carter tonight for the first time as had heard some good feedback from various people. Wished I hadn’t bothered to honest, tough under seasoned steak, greasy onion loaf, crap chips and a lettuce wedge. The food certainly didn’t live up to our expectations and the service was appalling, obviously caught out by the Wednesday night rush. At £97 for three of us I have had far better.

I’ve always thought Miller & Carter was surprisingly decent. Went to Hawksmoor the other day which was very good. Been before in London but the Edinburgh one was better.

I went to the Hawksmoor tonight and thought it was very disappointing. The food was fairly good, but nothing special and zero value for money. It's the first of these London chains in the area I've went to and will definitely be the last. The house lager was very good though, and the highlight of the visit.

Couple of visits to ‘chain’ restaurants.

Cafe Andaluz - one on George IV bridge, was superb excellent food and very cheap using the fixed price menu they have a chorizo and black pudding dish which is sublime.

Côte Brasserie - Pretty good had a steak which was done a bit too rare for me,lovely desserts and excellent staff.

Yeah it's much better I think.

Was at the Black pig and Oyster on Thursday night. £35 per couple for 8 tapas dishes and a bottle of wine, an absolute steal. The food is stunning.

Visited cafe dominicos a couple of weeks ago, had a great steak and the missus had a superb tuna steak.

Had a chilli dog at teuchters landing in Leith 3 weeks ago, which was very disappointing. Nice beer garden though.

Finally, was at the auld hundred last week and had their Rob Roy burger which was lovely

The Shore Restaurant at the Double Tree in North Queensferry is definitely worth a wee journey.

Any suggestions for a ‘cheap’ and cheerful meal in Leith next Saturday night?

By cheap I’m not talking about Wetherspoons cheap but nothing fancy. Think I prefer down the shore but can’t think of anywhere I really want to go so might venture up to Leith walk instead.

Open to suggestion regarding the type of food but definitely not Indian.

I’m a simple man with simple taste buds 😊, they used to do a brilliant deal that was 4 tapas and a bottle of wine for £25 but they decided to change their menu to lots of stuff that I’m sure is great for a foodie but a bit fancy for me, they’ve also put their prices up loads as well.

Vittorias is a really good shout as well though.

I see Serrano & Manchego has shut it’s doors for good on Leith Walk.

Was gutted about that, one of these places I’d been planning to go to but never got round to and would almost definitely have been my venue on Saturday.

Probably only have myself to blame to be fair as it was open for about 2 years but still annoying!

I always found Serrano & Manchego a strange one. It’s owned by the same people that have The Shack and El Barrio so it was quite a different venture for them to try. It will be interesting to see if there’s any reason comes out for them closing.

I was only in once and it was decent enough without really tempting me to go back.

It was open for nearly four years, owner blamed spiralling costs and difficulty with labour prefers to concentrate on his core business’s of night clubs apparently. Hopefully the space will be taken by another food outlet.

Leith depots pretty decent for food at reasonable prices. Compass for something slightly more formal and expensive. East pizza is really good too.

Decided to give the barologist a go. I used to really like it for food when it was the cameo, nothing fancy but decent value pub grub so will be interesting to see how it compares.

Cant say I’m particularly excited about going there for a drink to be fair as the whole theme looks a bit ridiculous to me but worth trying I suppose.

I went to Miros Cantina Mexicana over the weekend - the Mexican on Rose Street - which I'd been looking forward to for a while as I'd heard it was great Mexican food. I think I maybe got the places mixed up though as I thought it was fairly poor.

Admitedly it was lunch time when I went so maybe dinner is a different experience. The decor was nice and the staff were welcoming and friendly.

We started off sharing some guacamole with chips - the guacamole was poor in comparison to other place or what I can make at home, and at £6.50 was a rip off. My main of mixed meat and seafood paella was strangely saucy (maybe just how Mexican's do their paella?) with a weird taste throughout it. Others had the taco and enchilada options - both looked decent/better choices. Also spied some nachos on our way out that looked very nice, so I maybe ordered poorly.

I had thought this was the highly rated Mexican prior to visitng - but I'm now assuming that's a different place (I've Googled now - and I'm maybe thinking of El Cartel on Thistle Street)

Can't be arsed reading through 860 replies so apologies if it's been mentioned...Rhubarb restaurant in Prestonfield house. The best eating out experience I've had in Edinburgh. Absolutely beautiful rooms to have pre dinner drinks, your meal, then relax with a drink upstairs. Pretty expensive but if you want to impress your companion of choice it's a guaranteed leg opener :wink:

El Cartel is a cracking little Mexican, be prepared to wait for a table or leave your name/number then head around to the Queen's Arms for a drink whilst you wait.
I was there on Saturday afternoon, the Baja cod taco is outstanding along with the shredded chicken dish that was on the specials,,,, washed down with frozen mango margarita and a couple of VERY nice añejo tequilas (their tequila list is extensive).

Well worth a visit!

Not sure when it popped up but it's marketing itself as a meat & bourbon bar, sounds right up my street but worried it might just another hipster venture that looks good from the outside but no substance within!

Wish I’d had the chicken dish. Go to El Cartel regularly and my only complaint would be that there’s no chicken tacos on the normal menu. The cod, duck and pork tacos are all superb.

For some thing a little further afield, the Captains Table in Fraserburgh. We went a couple of weeks back and it was lovely. Nice fresh fish, as you would expect, but a little over priced. Surf n turf came with scallops rather than prawns. Small menu and varies depending on wl the fish on offer. Do a good Sunday roast too, apparently.

Just had a look at the website and its bizarre to say the least. Do agree that the cameo was decent.

If you like meat, it's awesome. Brazilian BBQ style, bringing skewers of meat to your table and eat as much as you want/can - complemented by a buffet of other dishes which were in the main very nice. Highlights were the minted lamb and garlic crusted steak. :drool:

One of those places that you leave craving a lie down and nap after over-indulging. :greengrin


Looking to organise an Xmas dinner with a few friends from my old work - any recommendations for a place to take a group of c.12/15 with varied tastes?

It wasn't great TBH.

Food was alright but i ordered something i shouldn't, what i read on the menu really wasn't really what i was seeing in my head if that makes sense. Not their fault to be honest but didn't particularly enjoy it, the Mrs said the same about hers, was alright but a bit 'meh'.

The staff were excellent to be fair, very friendly and couldn't fault the service in the slightest. If it was just the food though i would put that down as my mistake but there was something else just not quite right about the place. I am not sure what but it seemed a bit like they've made a bit of a half hearted attempt to go for this theme. I can't really put my finger on what was missing or what more they could do but to me it felt a bit like i was sat in the cameo with a few new ornaments and the bar staff wearing hats.

Went to the Spanish Butcher in Glasgow City Centre on Saturday evening to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Can't recommend it highly enough - food and service were absolutely out of this world. It's expensive, don't get me wrong, but well worth it for a special occasion IMO.

Their wine selection and knowledge is exceptional, and their olives are probably the nicest olives I've ever eaten.

There are worse ways to enjoy a meal. :greengrin

It's a tough balance with the sides, I usually go up with the intention of just getting a little bit to break up the meat and end up filling my plate with the extras.

I'm no good with the traffic light system either - my plate had filled up quite quickly so I went to red to finish what I had but they kept walking with meat to others at my table and I'd just think "yep, that sounds good" - I had 4 more meats before I decided just to turn to green again and stop pretending I wasn't a pig. :greengrin

It's the classic hipster by numbers problem. They think of a theme then don't actually have the imagination to carry it through.

The website is ridiculous and you just know it's trying to mask utter mediocrity in the cooking.

On the restaurant theme, sad news about Andrew Fairlie who is the only two star Michelin restaurant in Scotland.He has announced his retirement from the restaurant due to illness. Has been living with a brain tumour since 2005 and there is now no further treatment that can help.

Tried Lucas Kitchen in Dunfermline yesterday for lunch - I think it's the same Lucas that do the ice cream in Musselburgh.

£12.00-odd for a three course meal, had haggis bon bons to start and they were lovely, had a whisky sauce with them which was delicious. Went for the carbonara for my main and it was good as well, maybe not as nice as a home made one but not far off it, then sorbets for afters which were excellent.

Would definitely go back.

I mentioned it on here before but I went to Scottie’s for lunch again yesterday and it really is superb value.

If you’re after pub grub and are in this side of town it’s as good as you’re going to get IMO.

Myself and the wife got a sharing platter that was a really good size, a bowl of chips to share and two pints of juice and it came to about £15.

Is that "The Scottie" off Portobello road? That sounds good, but is some treck for me!

I like pub grub though, the best I've had so far is the antiquary on St Stevens street. The Conan Doyle is also good and in a nice central location/close enough for Hibs games.

We went to Malvarosa in Portobello last night, tapas place.

It was oustanding, service was good, food was excellent and the value for money was unreal. 4 of us had a sharing plate of bread, olives, cheese and dips to start. 8 tapas, a couple of desserts, 6 beers, 1 small wine and 1 large wine and 3 coffees and the total bill was £87. We left £25 a head and still felt we had scored.

Went to the Spylaw Tavern last night, worst meal I've had in a long long time.

Garlic bread with no garlic
Nachos and salsa... Salsa was like soup, with maybe about a spoon's worth of actual salsa, nachos lying in it were wet and floppy and the rest was burnt.
Curry and chips (friend detests the look/feel of rice) came with.... RICE
Lasange tasted like the cheap Aldi stuff I once tried
Macaroni cheese tasted of flour and not much else
I had to wait on my Lasange and some of my chips were half cooked
Gammon steak didn't come with any salad/veg despite being asked for.

Oh and as this was a "large" booking, we preordered the day before.... And they still got it wrong!

Oh well, place used to be alright, not on my list anymore.

The Spylaw is garbage. Microwaved pub grub in a soulless cave.

It was my Grandparents local years ago when it was the Royal Scot and I vaguely remember going in when I was really young. I believe it was a proper little local. Like many pubs it's been forced down the food route and like many it does it badly.

I remember back in the day it was a great wee pub, when it started doing proper food it was really decent for a while, then as you say it's gone down the generic crappy pub route of "cooking" ..... Was an 80th birthday meal, they actually prefer the Ratho Park but picked the Spylaw as they thought the "young ones" would prefer it..... If it wasn't for that I'd have handed my nacho "soup" back rather than picking the burnt nachos out!......

Great food, efficient, friendly staff, and a great atmosphere too.
To make it even better, we got a 20% discount from the price by showing our season tickets :-)

A wee thing that really impressed us was, today we received an email from the owners, thanking us for our custom and requesting feedback. I'm not too sure how many other restaurants do this, but its a very impressive after service.

I believe the owners are good Hibbies, so if any of you should happen to read this post, thanks, and keep up the good work folks.

We've actually just came out of Vittoria's on George IV Bridge, been many times and the 20% discount is a nice wee bonus.
They're doing a tie up with Social Bite and you can pay for a Christmas dinner for the homeless, at £5 each and ALL the cash going towards the needy we used our discount to pay for a couple of Christmas dinners,,,, sometimes it's nice to pass it on.

Went there a few years back and the food was vile, greasy and overcooked, beer was decent, glad the place has improved.

Was at Harajuku Kitchen last week. Would recommend it.

Went to Nok's Kitchen tonight - very nice Thai. Had a golden beef basket to start, then a beautiful duck curry with egg fried rice. Excellent service, and Reasonably priced too. Very small and busy so needs booked a little in advance.
