Kerr is the exact type of center half I admire. Big dynamic no nonsense powerhouse who can also pop up in the opposition box and score the odd goal. Have to say he is in my opinion a huge upgrade on Porteous. If we can sign Kerr and make a profit on selling Porto then its a win win imo.
We have had serious issues with bring through young central defence prospects since the emergence of John Blackley. 1971 & 74 we saw Alex Pringle make a few first team appearances and Derek Spalding, the latter making quite a few more, before their careers moved on to Dundee and Chicago respectively.
Craig Paterson looked the as though he would be the best since sloop through the ranks and played over 100 games before departing for Ibrox after around 3 years in the first team. We also had Gordon's Hunter and Rae, who will forever remain in Hibernian folklore but they reigned when we were dominated by "them" and then Tweedy came and went and then disappeared.
To me young Porty will be the best central defender to come through the Hibs ranks since Sloop, over fifty years ago. He has a physical prescience and is comfortable with the ball and can pick a pass, his reading of the game is improving and so is his concentration and awareness. I think in a couple of years when Ryan is the same age as Jason Kerr, there will be a number of people on here, twitter & FB with large amounts of egg on their chin. All IMHO of course.
I accept that he's a physical presence and is good on the ball but I don't accept that his reading of the game, concentration or awareness are improving - I'd say all of these things have regressed a fair bit over the past 6 months or so.
Until then I'd have been inclined to agree with you entirely and I was previously very excited by Porteous as a prospect. I'd also say that whilst I'd have grudgingly accepted he might be a bit rash at times, his awareness, reading of the game and concentration were actually much better than he got credit for.
Of course, there could be valid reasons for the regression. Other teams might have spotted a weakness and started targeting and exploiting him, having become more accustomed to playing against him over a couple of seasons. It might be a simple blip or poorer form that he simply needs to play his way through - the type of thing that happens to every player as they improve. He might be knackered - he played a lot of football last season and the spells where he probably looked worst were that bit before Daz came into the team at the end of January and then at the end of the season he looked shaky again. It might just have been mental fatigue. It might be that he's improved as far as he is going to under our present manager / coaching team and he'll need something or someone else to kick him on a bit further. It might be the attitude thing to do with being around the Scotland squad or getting his head turned by Championship interest.
In order to kick on and improve you have to tackle weakness or underperformance along the way and I think that to improve he needs to be better in the areas mentioned.
I'd love for it to be a bit of poor form, for him to stay with us and to kick on and improve on these weaknesses but I just don't see it happening. I think he'll be offski and I think we need to deal with that.
I also think the press and in particular the BBC have a real focus on Porto but it is all negative.
It would appear they like putting the boot into Porto, unfairly in my opinion
Porteous is still very young for a CH, in 3 years time he’ll be playing at far level than Kerr. If Hibs sell him I hope it’s for a lot more than £1m. He is still developing and will go onto be a mainstay of Scotland’s defence in the future.
Any idea when players are back for pre season?
