I remember being in a Dumbarton boozer with a couple of mates before the match, but have absolutely no recollection of the game. I don't think its an age thing, rather the match was easily forgettable.

This was one of the earliest games I can recall a group of Hibs Casuals travelling to ….

Pat Stanton had resigned and been replaced by John Blackley

HIBS and Dumbarton were locked together at the bottom of the League on points above basement club Morton but Dumbarton had the superior goal difference

Things looked bleak when Dumbarton raced into a two goal lead but Gordon Juke Box Durie 46 and 47 pulled two goals back in the second half

Jackie MacNamara was sent off and would face a four game ban

A home tie against league leaders East Fife drew a crowd in excess of 40000 Those supporting HIBS were met with the news that Combe was injured and his place had been given to young Michael Gallagher The new man had a solid game

With HIBS shooting down the slope in the first half Reilly earned a penalty for Turnbull to convert and Ormond scored a second after Duncan had equalised The same player made it 2-2 shortly after the break but HIBS upped their game and Buchanan and Johnstone got the goals to secure a 4-2 win

The fifers however stayed at the top with 18 points from 12 starts HIBS were second having earned 16 points from 11 starts

HIBS would win the League in this season

John Collins was starting to mould Tony Mowbray’s already good HIBS team into a leaner meaner slicker more direct hungrier outfit as his version of total football blew Motherwell away

HIBS raced into a 4-0 half-time lead with Scott Brown stabbing home the opener before setting up Chis Killen for the second after Rob Jones had hit the crossbar with a header

Ivan Sproule added a third when the ball fell kindly for him in the box then added his second and HIBS’ fourth when he raced onto a perfect ball from Beuzelin before drawing Meldrum and slotting home

Into the second half and HIBS continued to pile forward with Killen going close with a diving header McGarry of Motherwell was twice denied by Zibi who pulled off excellent saves before Jones with a header converted a Kevin Thomson corner

Steven Fletcher hit the post before McGarry got the consolation his play probably deserved but HIBS were not finished yet as substitute Dean Shiels shot home from close range after good work from Brown

Archie Buchanan with a second half header secured both points for the Hibees

HIBS would win the League in this season

After trailing by two goals in the first game at Hibernian Park the green jerseys fought back to force a replay

The replay was played in front of a big noisy Irish support in Glasgow and Hibernian easily won the game by four goals to nil

Another team from this area Partick Thistle approached HIBS for a game and it was played the following week at Easter Road the visitors going down by two goals to nil

Derek Riordan gave HIBS the lead against John Hughes’ Falkirk after only 37 seconds when the ball fell kindly to him in the box off Garry O’Connor’s heels from a Beuzelin pass and he fired the ball high into the net Gary Caldwell had a header cleared off the line before that man Riordan again curled a beauty of a free kick into the top corner from 25 yards on the half hour to put HIBS two up

Into the second half and Daryl Duffy who had twice been denied in the first half by Malkowski managed to flick an O’Donnell cross beyond him to pull one back for the Bairns

Falkirk equalised under controversial circumstances when HIBS who had claimed for an illegal passback to the goalkeeper were caught on the break and Alan Gow swept home a Duffy pass

Glennon in the Falkirk goal made saves from Riordan O’Connor and Thomson but as is so often the case in these circumstances Falkirk grabbed the winner when Zibi failed to hold a Kenny Milne cross and Duffy bundled home the winner

Hibs apparently cruising and Bobby Thomson decides to sprint 50 yards to assault the Standside linesman resulting in a straight red a six month ban and a transfer to Blackpool

High flying Queen Of The South were left stunned at half time as they found themselves 0-2 down thanks to strikes from Willie Ormond and Bobby Combe

The Doonhammers came flying out the traps in the second half with Jim Patterson quickly pulling a goal back Tommy Younger and his defence were then put under severe pressure but they managed to hold firm with Younger in particular performing heroics in the HIBS goal

Towards the end of the match Hibs caught Queens on the counterattack and Lawrie Reilly fired home a third to seal the points

High flying East Fife were weakened for this match due to injuries and international call ups

HIBS had their own injury problems with Davy Shaw replacing Jock Govan at right back

Right from kick off HIBS attacked and had two goals disallowed for offside in the first twenty minutes

Bobby Johnstone opened the scoring on the half hour with a rare header and Willie Ormond added a second before half time

Both players repeated the trick into the second half to put HIBS four goals up but this game is probably best remembered for Gordon Smith taking a ball on his head just inside his own half and setting off juggling the ball on his head all the way into the East Fife box finishing up with him heading the ball over the goalkeeper and narrowly past the East Fife post to the amazement entertainment and enjoyment of the assembled crowd

East Fife never gave up and Black scored a deserved late consolation goal for them

Hopes were high for the first League clash at Easter Road against undefeated Rangers

In beautiful weather the Irish were out in force to cheer on their Easter Road favourites

The 12000 crowd packed into the Holy Ground drew a gate of £311.43

Tommy Gemmell a new Hibernian forward had a great game opening the scoring amid scenes of almost indescribable delight on the part of the home supporters

Hibernian were then denied a goal or at least a penalty when a Rangers defender fisted the ball out of the net and the Referee exHearts defender James Adams turned a blind eye

The Irish navvies threatened a break in and they vented the Referee with colourful language

Tommy Gemmell however scored another one before Rangers pulled one back before half time

Rangers equalised into the second half. Play swung from end to end and Tommy Gemmell completed his hat-trick to put HIBS back in front but again Rangers equalised to make it 3-3

In the last seconds of the game - you guessed it- the ex Hearts Referee gave Rangers a soft penalty from which they scored to win the match

As the Referee blew for full-time he tried to rush to the safety of the dressing rooms but didn’t make it as the Hibernian navvies disgracefully assaulted him in a hostile demonstration against his blatantly biased refereeing

Colin Calderwood’s two game winning run came to a shuddering halt in an entertaining game in the Highland capital

Trailing to a Richie Foran first half strike Calderwood decided to reshuffle the pack at half-time by replacing Michael Hart for Paul Hanlon and Edwin De Graaf for Danny Galbraith

This plan worked for all of six minutes when Paul Hanlon handled an Adam Rooney strike on the goal line seeing red for the first and only time in his HIBS career

Adam Rooney converted the penalty although ex Caley goalkeeper Mark Brown was unlucky and almost kept it out guessing the right way

Rooney added a double to complete his hat-trick

Derek Riordan replied for HIBS when he latched onto a short Johnny Haynes pass back and rounded the stranded Esson for a tap in and Liam Miller with a penalty after Colin Nish was felled in the box

Steve Lovell pulled one back for the Dee after the break but a further headed goal from Alen Orman and a strike from substitute Dean Shiels near the end had the HIBS travelling support asking Jim Duffy what the score was?

Rangers dominated the first half hour and led through a Derek Parlane header HIBS then proceeded to dominate the remainder of the game but all they had to show for their efforts was a deflected Bobby Smith goal

HIBS’ cause was not helped by the fact that midfield genius Alex Edwards had to retire early from the field of play in the first half after being the victim of several heavy tackles

After a nightmare journey to Eastern Europe involving three flights and a long bus journey including passing through Checkpoint Charlie HIBS eventually kicked off in Eastern Germany and things could not have panned out any better with the German goalkeeper Friese fumbling an Eric Stevenson cross at the feet of Colin Grant for a welcome tap in after only 3 minutes

Hibs tried the old ruse of Joe McBride and Colin Grant swapping jerseys to throw the Germans off the first leg hat-trick hero’s scent but funnily enough it was his first game since joining the club that McBride had failed to score

The Germans huffed and puffed for the remainder of the match but they were unable to breach a HIBS defence superbly marshalled by Pat Stanton

Roy equalised for Dundee on ten minutes Reilly then gave HIBS the lead and what a peach it was evading two defenders and firing a low powerful shot into the net

Smith added a third for HIBS in the second half

Man of the match was Jackie Plenderleith who kept the dangerous Dundee forwards at bay

2004 Tony Mowbray took his troops to Dundee to give Jim Duffy’s men a footballing lesson winning 4-1

Derek Riordan and Garry O’Connor would score 42 goals between them in this season 2004/05

Q Who was the last HIBS striking duo to amass 42 goals between them in total up until this point in time?


1926 Legendary striker Jimmy McColl was getting on and had moved into the Restaurant business in Glasgow but was very much still a HIBS player and would score on this day in a 2-0 win over Queens Park at Easter Road and would go on to score a further 57 goals and become the first HIBS player to score 100 League goals for the club


1920 Hibs defeat Dundee 2-0 at Easter Road with John Darkie Walker having signed from Kirkintilloch Rob Roy making his debut in front of 12000 fans

Jimmy Dunn and Johnny Halligan scored the goals and we are told that a HIBS supporter with a megaphone led the Hibernian masses in the singing

HIBS were now just one player short of the ‘celebrated team’ of the 1920’s that would reach two Scottish Cup finals


1915 HIBS defeat St Mirren 2-1 at Easter Road both goals coming from new signing from Falkirk Henry Hutchinson 80 and 89

I attended this game at Firhill for Thrills Russell Latapy ran the show with his one touch pass and go

He was on a totally different level and the only way Hamilton could stop him was to get him sent off for a second bookable offence

This game is memorable because of the unusual kick off time 1.30pm on a Wednesday afternoon due to the power cuts and the possibility of extra time

A rough and tumble bad tempered affair the Referee was the busiest man on the pitch Rangers had parked the bus and there was no way through

Hibs found themselves out of the UEFA and League Cups but were sitting pretty in second place in the League

Hibs scored a whirlwind early goal when Gordon Smith set up Lawrie Reilly for the opener but disaster struck when young Donald Hamilton who was deputising for Tommy Younger who was away on National Service came for a cross and found himself barged into his own net still clutching the ball after colliding with Jimmy Bonthrone

Gordon Smith set Lawrie Reilly up for winner in the second half but the strangest thing was at this stage of the season Hibs occupied tenth place in the table and Rangers were eighth

Onions goal in the semi was unbelievable but not surprising as he was making runs like that week in week out.
I am sure that Napoli left Altifini at home for the second leg, big mistake.

On a freezing day Terry Butcher brought his Motherwell side to Easter Road looking for their first win in 10 games

After a goalless first half Steven Ferguson opened the scoring for Motherwell just after half-time

Motherwell’s Sengewald was then sent off after 55 minutes for a second bookable offence Mixu Paatelainen equalised three minutes later when he headed home a Derek Townsley cross He then turned provider 5 minutes later when he crossed in for Tam McManus to head home to put HIBS 2-1 up

Grant Brebner then came on as sub with 5 minutes left and was sent off two minutes later for retaliating to Stephen Pearson’s vicious tackle Pearson was also dismissed for the initial tackle to be followed by teammate David Partridge for his part in the post tackle melee

In the last minute John O’Neil was through on goal only to get hauled down in the box. He picked himself up dusted himself down and stroked home the penalty

Hibs went into the match minus Lawrie Reilly who had a chest infection and his place was taken by young Jimmy Mulkerrin

Hibs were caught cold when the Swedish Champions took the lead after only 90 seconds when Edlund lost his marker and fired home from 18 yards Moments later a shot from Sandberg stung Younger’s fingers

HIBS were starting to come more and more into the game with Willie Ormond twice going close before Gordon Smith lobbed a ball over a Swedish defender for Bobby Combe to meet perfectly on the volley to fire home the equaliser

Early in the second half Mulkerrin ran onto a Plenderleith clearance to,put HIBS 2-1 up from a tight angle. Mulkerrin was then tripped up inside the box and the usually dependable Eddie Turnbull sent his spot kick zipping past the post

The swedes were turning physical and English Referee Ellis was hard pressed to keep them in check

Eddie Turnbull atoned for his penalty miss when he scored a third 5 minutes from the end in off a defender

A Doug Somner double put Saints on easy street but Best pulled one back for relegation haunted HIBS in the last minute when he took a short corner from Ralph Callachan and curled one past Saints keeper Billy Thomson from the edge of the 18 yard box

The legs were gone but the football brain and vision were there for all to see as he sprayed passes all over the pitch

1973 The old double act was still very much alive and kicking as Alan Gordon opened the scoring at Muirton Park and despite intense Saints pressure Jimmy Jimmy O’Rourke added a late second to put the Hibees on easy street

Would highly recommend our own Jonnyboy’s excellent ‘At Easter Road They Play’ and ‘In Colours Green and White’ a hibee History from 1946-1986

Ian Colquhoun also does some excellent work but I agree we need more books from the naughties going forwards

Unfortunately like yourself I was working weekends in Financial Services around about then and could only attend games home and away somewhat sporadically

My memories are more the Tornadoes eighties and nineties

Always thought Stevie Cowan was never the same player once Bobby Thompson was suspended and his purple patch stopped then.
