One midweek game stands out in September 1988 wind and driving rain from start to finish

Gareth Evans gave us the lead then the Saintees threw everything at us but Andy The Goalie Goram put on the best display I have ever seen from a goalkeeper

It was like he had Teflon gloves He held every shot despite the conditions and the greasy ball and had his angles spot on

The only relief was Stevie Archibald who was the master at retaining possession

In a match played in a downpour this game was a lot closer than the scoreline suggests Munoz gave Valencia the lead after 11 minutes from an offside position Despite HIBS’ protests the goal was allowed to stand HIBS had several chances to equalise but found the Valencia goalkeeper Zamora to be in excellent form Guillot scored a second on 66 minutes Jim Scott and John McNamee hit a bar and a post respectively before Munoz again hammered the final nail in the HIBS coffin on 72 minutes

Hibs received a standing ovation from the Valencia fans and many rave reviews but at the end of the day we were out of Europe for another year

I remember being at that game.

It was an absolute masterclass in goalkeeping by Andy Goram.There was no need for him to make any spectacular saves as he his positioning and angles were perfect.

My only criticism of Andy (apart from joining the currant buns) was I once bought him a pint at a Hibs do but he never bought me one back.

In typical Hibs fashion, the game that stands out for me [for different reasons] a week after the white boots and euphoria of Joe Baker's second debut against Eddie Turnbull's [up until then] invincible Aberdeen team, we were at Love Street and Joe got himself dismissed in a 3-1 loss. I was 14 at the time and took my then 8 YO brother for his first away game, I won the first goal raffle on the bus and with the 50p winnings, I got us both fish and chips, when the bus had its customary stop on the way home, [changed days alright].

Sadly I lost my brother, [now over 22 years ago], he reminded me of fish & chips and Joe Baker's dismissal not long before his sudden passing, I had long forgotten it, but its been comforting to know that, that day we spent together watching the Hibees together meant that much to him, ot maybe it was the fish and chips :greengrin.

Rangers took the lead in the first half when John Paterson instead of clearing his lines decided to pass the ball back to goalkeeper Tommy Younger but could only watch in horror as his passback sailed over Younger’s head and into the unguarded net

Rangers smelt blood and went for the kill but Younger managed to pull off great saves from Waddell and Paton

Into the second half and Hibernian came out of the traps flying the five interchanging in a superb passing move that ended with Willie Ormond sending over a cross for Lawrie Reilly to head home the equaliser HIBS continued to dominate the game but could not add to their score as they found the Rangers goalkeeper Dawson to be in top form

HIBS would win the League in this season by ten clear points to second placed Rangers

IIRC it was Gordon McQueen that Joe smacked. Given Joe was also sent off for Arsenal for thumping Ron Yeats that's some double! Crazy really when you think of the punishment that strikers took from centre backs in those days.

Dundee United were flying at the top of the Premiership and deservedly took the lead through Gordon Wallace after only 7 minutes HIBS rallied however and clawed their way back into the game with Bobby Smith grabbing an equaliser in the second half with a typical long range effort

Big Tam McAdam scored the winner with what TV cameras later proved to be from an offside position ten minutes from the end

Special mention to Dundee United goalkeeper Hamish McAlpine who performed heroics on this day

Amazingly HIBS morally won the first half of this daunting fixture 0-0 with Arthur Duncan hitting the post and Pat Stanton forcing Dino Zoff to pull off a fantastic save

Joe Harper had a stomach bug and was replaced at half-time by Alex Edwards The Italians decided enough was enough and upped the ante with goals from Pietro Anastasi 2 Roberto Bettega and Jose Altafini to put HIBS firmly back in their box

Future England Manager Fabio Capello wore #10 for Juve that night

Alan Gordon told me the story that the Stadium had a big Clock and as the big hand approached 60 minutes you could hear the natives getting restless and you would glance across at their bench and you would see a grey haired tracksuit warming up and your heart would sink ‘ Aw no Jose Altafini ‘

After suffering two away defeats to Partick Thistle and Valencia HIBS hoped to get back to winning ways against a Hamilton team that contained ex hibee Johnny Frye and former Hearts legend Andy Bowman

In truth newly promoted Hamilton were out of their depth in the First Division and HIBS ran riot with Eric Stevenson in particular having a great game scoring his first senior hat-trick and Jim Scott and Jimmy O’Rourke each scoring doubles- O’Rourke being denied a hat-trick with the deflection for the own goal. Davy Hogg scored his first goal for the club and Joe Davis scored a goal that wasn’t a penalty

It is HIBS’ record home victory in a League match and matched their away victory versus Airdrieonians in 1959

It was the second time in this season that HIBS had scored eleven as they took eleven goals off Alloa Athletic in the quarter final of the League Cup

It was the first game played in front of the new cowshed at the North end of the Ground

What a night of frustration it was for Eddie Turnbull’s men who left the field with their heads bowed and no wonder They had attacked from start to finish but not one stroke of luck did they have Look at this for a catalogue of woes: Five goal line clearances by Leeds One HIBS shot that hit a post One disallowed goal A succession of magnificent saves by two young Leeds goalkeepers

Young Scot John Shaw was a hero in the first half and when he retired injured on came 17 year old Glen Letheren to perform equally well

It was Glen’s first senior match and one he will never forget HIBS won’t forget it either and certainly not poor Pat Stanton As the 36000 crowd held their breath at the end of extra time skipper Pat Stanton came up to take the first penalty and struck the post All the fans knew that was that Cropley Blackley Bremner and Hazel all scored but so did Lorimer F Gray Bates Clark and Billy Bremner whose shot entered the net via the underside of the crossbar

Hibs played skilful football and never stopped attacking Alan Gordon did manage to score with a header and the Referee awarded the goal but after the Leeds players protested and after consulting his linesman the counter was ruled out for offside

Leeds defended brilliantly and no one more so than Scotland Captain Billy Bremner whose sweeper role can only be described as an exercise in studied insolence but brilliant nonetheless

Leeds only had four attacks one of which Ellam had the ball in the net but was ruled out for an infringement on Jim McArthur

You have to feel sorry for HIBS there is nothing more they could have done as Leeds did to HIBS what Inter Milan did to Celtic in the Champions Cup penalty shoot out at Parkhead

I loved that Leeds game ..was in the Dunbar end of a packed ER…right down the front , where we “scored” for it to be ruled out …some game for a young Hibee

I'm confused, nothing new there! Who was it who dived for the pen in the 1973 replay at ER in front of 49,007? So many Rangers' dives, so many penalties!! On that subject, McCoist's dive in the Souness/Beastie game must surely be a contender!!

28th February 1973 a tough and controversial game

Arthur scored for us in a 1-2 replay defeat

Wee Tommy McLean scored two for them the last a late controversial penalty Pretty sure he dived

Jimmy Jimmy O’Rourke was strangely missing for HIBS as ET was having one of his brainstorms

Of course, McLean!! IIRC it was a worse dive than McDonald's

Thanks Billy had not seen the YouTube clip of McDonalds dive. Was in the North Stand so had a great view of it. It looked even worse than that clip showed. My Dad who was a referee and would defend refs could not explain such a ridiculous decision. He said that the refs performance that day was the worst he had seen, the Hamburg ref was next worst performance. He was not at that Aberdeen game which is on YouTube.

I think that was the same game that we had a corner , Forsyth flattened Edwards in the box as the ball came over,the ball was headed out,Duncan thrashed it into the roof of the net and the ref blew his whistle. We thought he'd given the penalty so he could chalk off the goal but no he'd given offside against Edwards as he tried to get up.

Nothing seems to have changed in 50 years. McLean and Alex McDonald were serial divers.

I remember the game Mickey walked over a prostrate Doddy and never even waited for the red and ran straight up the tunnel leaving MacDonald to lift up his light blue top to examine the damage

No quarter given or asked in them days
