Just got access to apple TV, any recommendations for police dramas, thriller type things or comedy dramas?
As an example, watching the jetty and high country on BBC just now.
Thanks guys, all of these look like my kind of thing. Cheers.
For comedies, Severance was good and bizarre
Shrinking about a group of physiatrists with Harrison Ford was great
I loved and broke my heart watching Trying about a London couple trying to conceive it is very funny though
Series i liked, Five days at Memorial about a hospital during hurricane Katrina is gripping
Lessons in chemistry, about a woman trying to break into chemistry in the 50s is brill
For all mankind, a thriller about if the space race didn't stop and where it would be
Crowded room, murder mystery set it the 70s
I really liked Manhunt in Apple as well…based on the aftermath of the Lincoln shooting re the manhunt for the shooter but flits back and forward to before and after.
Interesting enough as a standalone series but also quite informative on the politics of the time around the civil war and the subsequent shenanigans
Just watched Passenger, still trying to figure out what it was all about, stupid ending doesn't help.
I watched the first episode of Mr Bigstuff last night …… it was truly awful. Chris Evans, on his breakfast show, had Danny Dyer and Ryan Sampson as guests and was raving about it, even better than Brassic. Nonsense.
Finished season two of Them yesterday. Really good and well worth a watch
Watching Tokyo Vice. A bit of a slow burner for me. We're on episode 6 now but really enjoying it now
Those about to die looks very promising on Amazon Prime.
Supacell on Netflix is tremendous 👍
Apologies if mentioned already (more so if it was me that suggested it 🤪) The Bear on Disney + is outstanding, already one of my favourite shows. Takes an episode or two to get past the shouting but once you do, what a treat you’re in for.
For Science Fiction fans, "3 body problem" on Netflix is a decent watch. I'm on episode 6 of 8 and it's still got me hooked.
Started the 4th season of True Detective, got real Fortitude vibes, interestingly enough Christopher Eccleston appears in both.
Was a huge fan but not so much the latest series
Lots of long drawn out silences with not a lot happening before the next shouting match and pretentious background music but only half way through got to say they don’t hold back on budget with guest appearances but looks as though they are stretching it out
Not my usual choice but was impressed with a Good Girl’s Guide to Murder BBCi Player
Murder mystery that keeps you guessing right to the very end
I watched Suspect with James Nesbit over the last few days. It was ok, episodes only half an hour long, so easy to digest. Some of the plot was nonsense.
I’ll watch the second season but I’m not sure if I’d recommend it or not to be honest.
Been watching “A Person of Interest” on Prime, just completed the first season (23 episodes) a wee bit dated made in 2012 I think but enjoyed it and looking forward to season 2.
I'm late to this because as a massive Tolkien fan, I've been really hesitant to finally watch Rings of Power...so I'd put it off. Finally finished it last night.
I could write a thesis on it, but definitely a mixed bag. Doesn't have the 'awe' or beauty of Jackson's big-screen trips to Middle Earth, but some of the material they tap into from the appendices etc is nice.
Hibs v The Black Knight Group was an interesting first episode and has potential to be an entertaining season.
Some of it goes so far from the whole back story of the legendarium as to ruin it for me. Particularly, this whole ‘mithril is what gives the elves their power’ idea. Utter fantasy (see what I did there? :greengrin). Making the harfoots like wee gypsy leprachauns wasnt great either. CGI ropey despite all the cash spent.
Im still excited to see what they do with the second season, there was enough decent stuff to make me think theres a chance it can improve. Music was great, acting mostly strong. The best plot bits were around the Numenor storyline. Like you ima big fan ofthe published works but its no more than a 6.5 out of 10 for me.
I don’t think it helps that will always be compared to one of the the greatest trilogies of all time. If the films didn’t exist I think it would get more credit.
Saying that I’ve watched videos where they break down why different aspects, like fight scenes, are much poorer versus the films. Thought they were quite good and made a good case as to why aspects compare unfavourably.
Thought the series was fine, though not one I’d watch for a second time.
Yeah, those Hobbit trilogy movies were immense :greengrin
In all seriousness, the filmmakers were on a hiding to nothing. First, the tremendous legacy of Jacksons LOTR movies, as you say. (Although they had their canonical faults too-no way Aragorn decapitates the Mouth of Sauron at the gates- he was an EMISSARY and Aragorn is nothing but a stickler for respectful conduct, anyway…). Second, the record breaking budget. You literally have to be better than the best telly ever made to justify being, well, the most expensive tv show ever made. And thirdly, two rabid online communities who have a dog in the fight; Tolkein purists who require everything to be canonically perfect or it’s sacrilege, and MAGA nutters who object to any portrayal of characters by non white actors as being’woke’. These two groups had so much online chatter during the shows launch that all media started picking it up. It became inevitable it would be branded a flop.
Yeah, that entire story arc could have been omitted for me and it wouldn't have harmed the series. I didn't think the casting was wonderful, and the 'styling' of them was irritating as you suggest. There's certainly enough material in the wider lore to have a successful S2, but 6ish is probably what I'd go with too! Currently re-reading The Similarillion as it happens (which was partly why I thought **** it, I'll give it a go). I'm heartened by the fact that JRR didn't start writing The Hobbit/LOTR til he was in his early 40s. There's still time :greengrin
Edited to add: one area of criticism I do think a lot of critics/fans doled out a little unfairly was the casting of Morfyyd Clark as Galadriel. I really liked her.
I’ve never seen any the LOTR or Hobbit films. Seems like too much of a commitment.
Same with the Avengers.
Are they worth the hours to get through them all??
Ha ha..... You've commented a few days ago that you watched some bang average James Nesbitt series but you don't have time for the LOTR films?! Madness.
You should watch the extended versions and just treat it like a TV show. 1-2 hours per sitting and it'll be done in 10 hours or so. Some of the best films of all time. Or even better if you can, watch them at the cinema.
Hobbit films aren't great and Marvel films are good but probably not worth the time to work back on the dozen or so films that lead into the last Avengers films.
LOTR is incredible though.
I liked the LOTR films well enough. Didn't stick with the tv series.
Watched Doctor Strange movie because Benedict Cumberbatch was in it. Liked it. Watched the sequel - had no idea what was going on. The protagonists had all been involved in other movies in the meantime, so I was lost. Unless you watch the lot and in the right order, I wouldn't bother with any.
Was flicking through an old drive I have and found a new thing to watch and something to rewatch. So I started re-watching The Mentalist, it was an American series about 'psychic/mentalist' turned police consultant that helped the Californian Bureau of Investigation solve crimes, I loved it first time around and got right back into it. If you've not watched it before it is worth a wee watch if you're into crime fiction, no blood and guts, no swearing just prime time American TV doing what it is meant to do, entertain. The clips are popular on TikTok I am told.
The new thing I found started in 2019, I am surprised I never seen this at the time but it was on Disney+ so thats probably the reason. It is The Godfather of Harlem a bio (loosely based on his life) series about Bumpy Johnson a black crime boss who comes back to Harlem after a 10 year jail term. Only watched the first one but it was a beauty, great cast lead by Forest Whittaker and Vincent D'Onofrio both of whom rank high on my list of favourite actors. Can see myself getting hooked on this, there is three seasons to enjoy. I really hope it keeps up the standard of the first episode! This one is not for the faint hearted, lots of swearing and violence, language used is of its time and place.
I’ve tried the Godfather Of Harlem a few times. I enjoyed it initially but each time I’ve drifted away from it after a handful of episodes, without thinking it was poor. It ticks all the boxes but for some bizarre reason it doesn’t hold my attention for long.
Vikings - Valhalla season 1 episode 1 superb
The 8 Show on Netflix. A slow burner to begin with but gripping once it gets going.
dunno how i let this one slip through but i noticed a Squid Game-The Challenge when i was looking through my IPTV TV shows last weekend so binge-watched the 10 episodes, really enjoyed it, it was actually released last November :greengrin and was the most watched on Netflix and number one in 74 countries winner won $4.56m, largest ever for a reality TV show, though filmed in UK it seemed to be mostly yank contestants
Thanks, I have heard of it, stunning cast by all accounts and a gore fest which I am partial to. It's on my list now
I watched the first episode of the second season then lost interest or I think I might have started another show. All of us are dead is excellent, fast paced action filled with enough gore to make me happy.
Id recommend Concrete Utopia and Badland Hunters too, post apocalyptic films set in a destroyed Seoul. Well worth a watch.
The feature length documentaries the BBC are doing in the run up to the Olympics are really good. Been one about Daley Thompson and Linford Christie so far. The latter in particular was pretty harrowing viewing, the racism he faced from the press was unreal. Not sure if there are any others planned but these 2 are both excellent.
Snowfall.... I hadn't heard of this series before but it apparently started in 2017. Based around the introduction of crack cocaine in LA in the 80s and the gangs involved in that. I'm addicted (no pun intended), 6 series to get through on BBC Iplayer and the soundtrack alone is worth the watching of it.
Looking forward to time bandits on apple TV.
LOL! I actually noticed it trying to set up subtitles for my Mrs on Disney+ for The Bear difficult to do for this dinosaur but even more difficult when there is no dialogue Noticed going through Series 3 there are lots of monologues will probably end up getting nominated for another Emmy First class script writing
Oddly enough the Daryl series comes after the Rick and Michonne programme in the chronological timeline that I saw recently.
The Daryl series starts on Sky Max on Thursday.

Finished presumed innocent on Apple TV really good series, also finished the latest series of the boys on Amazon which I’m still enjoying as well can’t be much left of that though I’d think
I really wish that they would realise that The Rookie has run it's course. I'm 6 seasons in and feel that I need to follow it through to it's conclusion. Nice eye candy helps I suppose. 🤭
Been watching Manifest over the past couple of months. Really enjoyed it up to part way through the 3rd season. Almost at the end of the 4th (final) season but becoming a bit of a chore. It is really when all the religious nonsense came into it that I went off it.
Not normally my kind of thing but, halfway through Love & Death, quite decent so far. Elizabeth Olsen and Lily Rabe have been particularly good in it.
Not current TV but I’m watching the Rowan Atkinson Mr Bean series. Absolutely timeless comedy.
Squid Game S2 starts on Boxing day with a 3rd and final season planned for next year as well, whilst a 2nd season of Squid Game the Challenge will return for a 2nd season
Not the first person to say the same when I’ve recommended it, I wasn’t aware there was a movie so maybe going in blind helped me, every character did have some sleaze attached though I get what you mean about not being able to pull for anyone kept you guessing about who it was all the way through which I enjoyed
Vikings :Valhalla :top marks
3 season's, iv'e done and dusted 2 , No sure if i should have started Vikings box set that was out in 2013 first but don't think you have to
Finished Tokyo Vice, enjoyed it. Improved after a slow start
Started Lupin tonight. 2 episodes in. Decent viewing so far
Just finished The Victim on STV player, really enjoyed it.
Just finished 1st season House of the Dragon. Load of rubbish. They tried to cram way to much into it. The way it jumps between 5/10 years each episode make a real struggle to follow.
Just started season 2 of Kleo on Netflix. Loved season 1 so hopefully this doesn’t disappoint. Anyone seen it yet?
