If you treat people the way he does, they’ll happily drop him and his company in the deep stuff by taking their pay to sit at home.

People who are treated well, appreciate that fact and also the fact that their absence lumps extra grief on one of their colleagues wouldn’t.

Having said that - this whole situation does have the potential to sink my business once and for all. There aren’t many of us and we work in close contact with each other. If one person comes into contact with someone who has it, we’ll effectively all have to self-isolate and shut down for 2 weeks - and we can’t afford to.

I'd agree but you have to bear in mind this is a company with thousands of employees - it's perhaps different for small businesses.

Not saying I necessarily agree with it but it is a difficult balancing act. If they announced that all employees who are feeling unwell and need to self isolate for 2 weeks would be paid whilst off you can absolutely guarantee you'd have a sizeable chunk of people taking that opportunity when they are perfectly healthy.

There is no even answer to this unfortunately.

FWIW I do agree with you entirely, and for exactly the reasons you mention.

I'm self employed. If I need to shut down for 2 weeks I'll cope. Anything longer though and I could be in trouble.
See that that's the first British person confirmed dead because of it.

How about sacking anyone who claims they are self isolating, and are not?

On the other hand, why should an employer bear the costs of a public health policy that is not even evidence based? Where does this two week figure actually come from?

I thought the two weeks was the period the virus can lie undetected.

I could work from home if need be, though I'd definitely lose a bit in efficiency/productivity.

Im doing a bit of foreign travel over the next few weeks and ive just bought a pack of surgical masks and 60% alcohol handwash and will be wearing the mask at airports. Judging by most of the posts on here this will be dismissed as panicking:greengrin But anyone spending much time in Asia generally knows that its really common to wear a mask, both when you have a virus and to stop others getting one. Well before this current scare. It actually makes sense, but just isn't part of the culture here so it seems outlandish to some.

Who says the masks dont do anything? Doesn't it depend on the quality of the mask. If they dont do anything why do doctors/hospital staff wear them?

The mask should be worn if you have the disease as can help stop spreading it. Most masks will do nothing to prevent you from catching it.

So surgeons wear them to stop them spreading disease to a patient? Surely it's the other way around?

It doesn't 100% stop the chances of other people infecting you, but it minimises the chance of large droplets getting to you.

Handwashing and avoid fiddling with your nose and mouth also important :greengrin

Yeah but coronavirus isn't a large droplet, it's tiny. Small enough that surgical masks do nothing.

I read different advice, that surgical masks minimise the risks, and the link earlier I think confirms that, but I'm no expert...

I’m with Wetherspoons on this. You can’t give paid sick leave to people who are not sick. The cost of such a policy would have to result in lower take home pay for all employees.

Whats the cost of someone, who is fearful of losing pay, going to work whilst ill and spreading illness to colleagues and customers?

Obviously someone choosing to self isolate for no good reason is one thing but if someone is advised by a medical professional not to attend work as they are high risk then they should be treated as though they are ill.

It cost £15 for 10 masks from Hewats the workwear shop, so it's not like I've been fleeced if they are ineffective! It also means I've got less chance of being coughed sneezed and spluttered on by the usual manky ****s you get wandering around in public.

Anyone see the skype video of the guy 'trapped' in the Tenerife hotel, featured on TV news last night.
Was wearing a Celtc top, and had no front teeth.

On questioned if he was confined to his room he said

"I can go out for a walk, as long as I wear a mask".


Seemed fair enough to me.
