After a nervous 1-1 draw at Hampden in the first semi final where Jimmy ORourke had equalised Alex MacDonalds opener all eyes were once again turned towards Hampden to see which team would go on to play in the 1972 Scottish Cup Final

In truth Rangers could not compete with HIBS that night HIBS turned on a display of fast attacking interchanging possession football and their dominance in the match was so total that the Rangers hordes had left long before the end

HIBS opened the scoring on 12 minutes when Pat Stanton broke through the Rangers defence from midfield his shot from outside the box took a deflection off Colin Jackson’s shins to deceive the Rangers goalkeeper Peter McCloy

Alex Edwards scored a cracker of a second on 66 minutes when an Alan Gordon cross was nodded into his path by John Hazel and he duly buried it into the Rangers net

Hibs then proceeded to retain possession spraying the ball about with such pace and accuracy that the Rangers players were longing for the final whistle long before it came

In his biography Eddie Turnbull recalled:

The replay was on a Monday night at Hampden Park and in that match we saw John Brownlie at his best I had begun to play Alex Edwards in an unusual position Very few managers sussed that I was no longer playing him as an out and out winger That was where he lined up but he would soon move slightly inside from the wing to the gap where an old fashioned inside right might have operated This baffled full backs who did not know whether to come with him or stay in their normal position John Brownlie with his pace could go down the wing and exploit the space but sometimes he and Edwards would exchange places and in that game we destroyed Rangers down the right wing By full time we had beaten Rangers 2-0 and in my first season as a manager I had taken HIBS to a Scottish Cup Final

The biggest win at the end of a disappointing campaign was played in front of the lowest crowd

Hibs would play one more game at Easter Road a Friendly against Maastricht in which they would win 3-0 the goals coming from Johnny Graham Alex Cropley and Kenny Davidson

Bobby Mathieson would make his debut at left back but the game that would attract another sub 4000 crowd is probably best remembered for the fact that the Maastricht goalkeeper played the entire 90 minutes wearing glasses

This was the season that Hibernian went head to head for the Championship with Rangers eventually losing out on Goal Aggregate by the minutist of margins despite having the better goal difference of +1 and on today’s calculations would have won yet another League title for Hibernian Football Club

HIBS gave Third Lanark a thrashing of 7-1 to boost their goals for column but if it had not been for goalkeeper Wee Jocky Robertson in the Thirds goal HIBS would have surely won the League He brought off save after brilliant save throughout the match as the HIBS forward line applied the pressure including saving a first half Turnbull penalty

Bobby Johnstone had notched a hatrick in twenty five minutes and Gordon Smith added a fourth before the interval Ormond Turnbull and Smith again took the total to seven into the second half but Henderson pulled back a sickening late consolation for Thirds with a thirty yard worldy past Younger with two minutes to go

This was the same day that Rangers were drawing 1-1 with Aberdeen at Hampden in the Scottish Cup Final and a huge roar went around the ground when Aberdeen equalised to take the game into a replay as the 18000 crowd tuned in on their transistor radios

In the first home game after the Championship win HIBS ran out to a full house to face Raith Rovers and had Alex Bruce in goal for his only first team appearance for the club By chance Rovers also had their substitute keeper on duty and whist Bruce was a virtual spectator Johnstone had to pick the ball out of net three times courtesy of goals from Turnbull Combe and Reilly

Pretty sure I saw an image recently on HIBS.net of HIBS unfurling the league flag at this fixture

The 11 years old me was at the game ,my m8,s dad came from Kilmarnock, both my m8 and me Hibs fans though.😆👍

I still remember all the buses parked along Hutchison Road

The fans walked along the old railway track to cut through to Gorgie Road

At first I thought they were Huns as there were thousands of them and they wore blue colours but they were too friendly to be Huns :greengrin

Hibs with 17 minutes left for play in their second leg of the Fairs Cities Cup Semi Final in Rome last night were brought dramatically back to a draw after being two goals in the lead Manfreddi and Lojacano got the late goals to save the Italians

It was a great night for the Easter Road boys and now they’ll meet Roma in a decider at the same venue on May 11 The teams tossed for it and HIBS lost

HIBS sprang a fast one on the Italians Baker was listed and played at centre but the number nine jersey was worn by Kinloch Baker wore number eight The numbering strategy baffled the 30000 crowd and seemed to mystify the Roma defence So well did the strategy work that HIBS were two goals up with a quarter of the game remaining only a late rally from Roma kept HIBS from repeating their triumph over Barcelona

Most of the game was played in a spectacular thunderstorm with great lightning flashes the pitch was almost flooded

At the start Sammy Baird was sent crashing to the ground in a heavy tackle HIBS got in the first shot Cudicini clearing a squiggler from Baker with his boot

In five minutes the HIBS goal had an amazing escape Orlando raced away and his centre was completely missed by Manfreddi in front of goal Baker then made ground in a HIBS raid that ended with a Gibson shot being safely saved by the Roma keeper In HIBS ‘ next thrust McLeod from Bakers pass was nudged off the ball in the box but the ref saw nothing wrong and waved play on

HIBS began to look more settled in 20 minutes then they found themselves a goal down Manfreddi netting easily from a Menichelli cross Then in 32 minutes HIBS stunned the home crowd with the equaliser Kinloch rapped the ball high into the Roma net after a clever left wing move The goal bucked HIBS up and a Baker shot zipped past the Roma post A free kick from Orlando whizzed over the bar and Ronnie Simpson safely held an effort from Lojacano

Within two minutes of the second half Simpson was making a fine save from a Menichelli header after an Orlando cross had beaten the defence This was followed by a real scare when Lojacano was brought down just inside the box but the referee decided the initial tackle was just outside the box

In the 60th minute HIBS took the lead thanks to a wonderful goal from Baker From midway in the Italian half he weaved his way past three defenders and hit a low slanting ball that curled into the net at the far post Great stuff from HIBS and there was more to follow Kinloch sent over a cross from the right and up rose Baker and the ball shot off his forehead and into the net to put HIBS 3-1 up on the night

The Roma crowd was gloomily silent now but they found their voices again in the 67 th minute when Manfreddi burst through and sent a low shot past the advancing Simpson All the HIBS players except Baker were now in defence and the Roma fans were urging their players forwards The equaliser came in the 73rd minute Lojacano netting from close range

There were some desperate moments in the HIBS goal after that but Simpson held out including one outstanding point blank save

The tie should have been over in the closing minutes as Manfreddi clean through on goal shot high over the bar from only ten yards out and held his head in frustration

The referee blew the final whistle and the HIBS players had to make a beeline for the dressing room as the unsporting Roma fans spat at them and threw fruit banana skins and all sorts down on them

Hibs were red hot favourites for this final and Leith emptied to push the attendance up to 95000 this in spite of Gordon Smith and HIBS main defender ( Jock Paterson) both being injured for the match

The HIBS Scottish Cup curse seemed to strike after only 15 minutes when young winger Andy Aitken suffered a match ending injury and John Baxter deflected a Coyle shot past goalkeeper Lawrie Leslie to put Clyde up 1-0

Joe Baker scored what he thought was a late equaliser for HIBS but was adjudged to have used a hand

Scottish Cup Final 26/4/1902

This match was originally due to take place at Ibrox Park but due to a Stand collapse at the recent Scotland v England match in which 25 people were killed and 517 were injured Hibernian agreed to play the final at Parkhead

If Hibernian were going to win the cup for the second time they would have to do it the hard way

Johnny Divers kicked off for Hibernian at exactly one minute past 4pm amid a tumult of noise The game did not live up to its hype because a very strong wind blew diagonally across Celtic Park making any scientific play impossible It was a dour struggle

It was an evenly contested first half with perhaps Celtic unfortunate not to score and also employing an effective offside trap nullifying any Hibernian raids

In the second half HIBS took the initiative more The Hibernian forwards pressed constantly but in a breakaway Celtic hit the post Bobby Atherton then beat the Celtic offside trap and scored but was ruled out for offside

Hibernian however finally got the winning goal in 75 minutes Paddy Callaghan won a corner took it quickly and cleverly to Bobby Atherton who in a fine piece of gamesmanship dummied it and shouted in a Glasgow accent “leave the ba” at the Celtic defence who kindly obliged leaving the cheeky arrogant Andy McGeachan to backheel the ball through the legs of McFarlane the Celtic goalkeeper

The big HIBS support who made up the majority of the crowd went crazy

There was high jinks in the streets of Edinburgh as the triumphant team returned home They were greeted by Newhaven Brass Band who played “ Hail the Conquering Hero” and another horse drawn carriage which carried the team and the cup along Edinburgh’s main thoroughfare Princes Street where it was greeted by 10000 supporters bringing traffic to a standstill on the main streets of the capital

The procession went along Princes Street down the top of the Walk along London Road and down Easter Road where there was much joyful singing dancing and chanting each player getting the opportunity to raise the cup before their adoring fans never before had Edinburgh seen such a gathering of people just for winning a football match

When the crowds eventually dispersed the Hibernian party including legendary Manager Dan McMichael retired to President Philip Farmers pub in Leith Walk where many a dram and a hearty toast was taken out of the Scottish Cup

Sir Tom Farmer once said in an interview that a cabinet in his house was once the temporary home of the Scottish Cup

Substitute Ross Caldwell with his first goal for the club gave HIBS the lead from 18 yards but Marc McAusland with a quick fire double put Saints back into the driver’s seat

Leigh Griffiths with his 27th goal of the season equalised from a suspiciously offside position to give his former club bottom team Dundee a lifeline who had defeated Hearts at home but still found themselves eight points adrift of 11th placed St Mirren with three games still to play

The one thing we learned from this match was that form certainly goes out of the window when it comes to derby games HIBS who remain unbeaten in the league under Heckingbottom looked as if they had the points in the bag such was their dominance in the second period only for Hearts somehow to draw strength from the depths to snatch a point Hibernian fans will look back on this game as two points dropped in their search for a fourth placed finish

Hearts survived a dodgy first half with Soutar in particular looking nervous and Zlamal pulling off saves from Omeonga and Stevenson HIBS kept up the pressure second half Slivka should have opened the scoring for HIBS with a header that brought out a point blank save from Zlamal then Ikpeazu caught Hanlon in the box with an innocuous clumsy attempt at a clearance handing HIBS a soft penalty that McNulty failed to convert clipping the outside of the post HIBS kept up the pressure and Horgans cross was diverted into his own goal by skipper Berra

Hearts introduced the experienced Stephen MacLean into the fray and it paid off with six minutes to go as he got onto the end of an Ikpeazu flick managing to cut the ball back into the path of the onrushing centre forward who guided it past Marciano

Hibs boosted their chances of a second place finish with a thrilling victory over Kilmarnock

Scott Allan opened the scoring following a neat one two with Kamberi inside the Kilmarnock box and smashed the ball across Leo Fasan and into the right hand corner

Kilmarnock were level two minutes later when Kris Boyd was given too much time and space in the box and was able to direct his header through Marciano for his 22nd goal of the season

Into the second half and Steven Whittaker gave HIBS the lead with a first time finish following a glorious pass from John McGinn

Findlay for Kilmarnock pulled the Rugby Park men level again though questions have to be asked about the HIBS defence

MacLaren added a third for HIBS before Kamberi was denied a penalty claim but made it 4-2 a few minutes later in any case

A howitzer of a Boyd freekick made for an interesting finish before Brandon Barker showed us that he does know the way to goal after all to secure an excellent 5-3 win

A brilliant performance from both teams

Gordon Smith a Hearts Supporter was born and bred in Edinburgh but his family moved to Montrose when he was an infant

By the age of 16 he was playing centre forward for junior side Dundee North End and was selected to play for a Junior Select side versus a very strong Hearts HIBS select side to open Lochee Harps new ground The Junior Select side won 3-2 with the young Gordon Smith scoring a hatrick

Hibs Manager Willie McCartney was at the match and Hearts Chairman Mr A Irvine offered Gordon Smith a trial Willie McCartney didn’t need to give Gordon Smith a trial he had just witnessed a great footballing talent and that was enough for him

While Hearts dithered and the press linked Gordon Smith to Hearts McCartney made his move arranging to meet Gordon and his dad in Artbroath Gordon Smith was very impressed with the flamboyant McCartney with the tremendous personality who invited Gordon and his dad down to the North British Hotel on Monday the 28th April where there would be no trial nonesense and he would go right into the Hibernian first team at Tynecastle that very same day versus Hearts

A couple of hours later the footballing bargain of all time lined up in Hibernians famous green jersey along sides two other new recruits Jock Weir and HIBS daft Bobby Combe in the Southern League match that had been postponed from New Years Day due to the war

Willie McCartney had pulled a real flanker over Hearts that day with Gordon Smith being listed as a trialist on the team sheets scoring a hatrick Bobby Combe also got one of the goals Tommy Walker of Hearts scored all three Hearts goals

Willie McCartney sent his team out that day with these instructions “ keep the ball on the deck and well away from that big Hearts puddin Dykes”

Hibs were Champions now and easily disposed of relegation haunted Ayr United with a polished performance in a game where they could relax the shackles were off and at long last they had the freedom to express themselves

Hibs were hungry from the start and Cummings went close when he hit the outside of the post

He was not to be denied however and following good footwork from McGinn out on the left he nodded home McGinns accurate cross

It was two shortly after as Grant Holts cross was met at the back post by the oncoming Boyle to slide the ball under goalkeeper Greg Fleming

The second half was more of the same with HIBS applying the pressure McGinn and Boyle both going close with long distance efforts before Cummings set up substitute Keatings for a simple tap in for HIBS’ third

Cummings wasn’t done for the day though and added his second and HIBS fourth after Keatings turned supplier with a delightful through ball

Ayr staged a late rally but Laidlaw comfortably held efforts from Rose and Meggat

The stalemate continued until the last minute when HIBS broke upfield David Farrell drilling in a shot from the edge of the box that United goalkeeper O’Hanlon managed to block but as the ball spun up in the air Pat McGinlay with a trademark late run managed to divert his header past the grounded keeper for a dramatic late winner

United were under the temporary charge of Billy Kirkwood for this match

Bobby Johnstone very quickly gave HIBS a 2-0 lead but Young then beat off Howie and Buchanan before sending a shot towards goal Tommy Younger seemed to have the shot covered but allowed the ball to squirm from his grasp and sneak over the line

Into the second half and roared on by the crowd further strikes by Willie Ormond and Eddie Turnbull would be to no avail as the Championship literally went down to the last kick of the ball and Rangers would win the League on goal average

If it was based on goal difference another title would be in the bag

There was something happening down Easter Road way the Tornadoes were starting to take shape but still not quite as we know it

Hibernian blew St Johnstone away with a scintillating display of fast attacking football goals from Stanton Edwards ORourke Baker Gordon 2 and Duncan in a totally brilliant display

Alex Rennie scored a consolation goal for St Johnstone in what was HIBS biggest win since they beat Partick Thistle 7-0 in September 1966

Sadly this was to be the Baker Boys last goal for HIBS

I actually attended his last game for HIBS a Scottish Cup Semi Final versus Rangers in front of a crowd of 76174 on a hot sunny Saturday afternoon at Hampden one week after the St Johnstone game

Hibs started nervously and found themselves down to an Alex MacDonald goal but second half HIBS rallied Peter McCloy parried a Baker shot into the path of ORourke who had no hesitation in burying the ball into the back of the net to silence the large Rangers support

The replay took place two weeks later and HIBS blew Rangers away with a display of fast attacking football Stanton opening the scoring after 12 minutes and Alex Edwards completed the scoring after dispatching a Hazel knockdown into the net

It was a superb display from HIBS and Rangers could not compete with the accuracy and speed of the Hibernian passing in a game HIBS totally dominated from start to finish Ole! Ole!

I do not think any of the Supporters Buses returned to Edinburgh with their windows in tact

Both of these games made a young Billyhibs realise what a horrible and despicable club Rangers really were and they certainly did not like it up em!

Hibs hadn’t won at Celtic Park since 1992 Celtic were chasing the title but were stunned when Garry OConnor gave HIBS the lead after only six minutes Derek Riordan started the move with a clever back heel deep in his own half to send Scott Brown away into the oppositions half where he found the overlapping Garry OConnor The striker still had plenty to do but cut inside Stanislav Varga with ease then placed his right foot shot past the on rushing David Marshall from eight yards

Both sides had chances to score before Craig Beattie equalised for Celtic on the hour Celtic and their fans were starting to turn up the heat and the yellow clad hibbies were starting to feel the pressure Balde hit the side net with an effort and Simon Brown pulled off a great save from a Hartson header

Substitute Ivan Sproule became the hero with 11 minutes remaining when he pounced on a loose ball to fire under the body of Marshall Hibernian were not finished there however and Scott Brown took Murray’s long ball in his stride to coolly chip the advancing Marshall to spark more wild scenes in the visiting section despite some over zealous Celtic Stewarding

Beattie tried to pull his side back into the game with two minutes remaining but Simon Brown tipped his effort over the crossbar

The final game of the season had little at stake HIBS had won the league and Celtic had won the Scottish Cup but both sides served up an entertaining game for the 22000 fans

HIBS started like a train and Bobby Johnstone had two astonishing misses the first when he hit the bar from about six yards out and again when he was clear through and totally miskicked

In 22 minutes Smith crossed Mallan and Reilly both jumped and missed and Buchanan was next in line to hit the ball first time into the net

After 25 minutes of the second half Reilly made it safe Turnbull headed the ball towards him at the edge of the Celtic box with his back to goal he allowed the ball to go over his shoulder before spinning and volleying a left foot shot into the net

With three minutes to go Turnbull shivered the Celtic timber with a terrific drive the ball bounced on the line and the ever ready Reilly tapped it through

Ex hibee Jock Weir pulled a cheerless goal back for Celtic at the death

With Falkirk winning 1-0 versus Morton HIBS needed to defeat QOS by four clear goals to avoid an extra play off double header in midweek against Raith Rovers

Queens defended stoutly and were well organised but HIBS had chances to score Liam Henderson forced a save from James Atkinson Anthony Stokes did likewise later on as did John McGinn

Queens had a fine chance to take the lead themselves when Dale Hilson fired over Conrad Logan’s bar from a good position

The second half had just started when James Keatings was put through on goal and spurned a wonderful opportunity to give HIBS the lead when his shot was blocked by the keeper

On 55 minutes Millar was sent off for an ugly tackle on McGinn the gods were at last smiling on HIBS

There was still time for a goal rush but once again Henderson flicked wide of the goal from a good position

Just on the hour Stubbs introduced Cummings but surprisingly when the goal came it came from an unlikely source when Gunnarsson turned in a Henderson cross to give HIBS some hope

Cummings made it two with a header from a Boyle cross on 79 minutes but Queens held out after that

Hibs will rue their missed chances having 21 shots 11 on target they leave themselves a marathon task to get promotion a double header versus Raith then the winners playing Falkirk to see who plays the second bottom Premiership side

There is always the Scottish Cup I suppose?

Hibs kicked off their defence of the Summer Cup with a fine 3-0 win over a strong Hearts side in front of just over 13000 fans at Easter Road Hearts defended stoutly for the first hour but HIBS broke down Hearts stiff resistance with goals from Jim Scott and a double from Neil Martin

The Summer Cup may sound like an obscure trophy now but back in the days of little or no televised or foreign football coverage it was a prestigious trophy to win Most fans in bygone days only cared about the Scottish game

Over the bridge next to East End Park not a happy hunting ground for the men from Leith with it having been six seasons since they had tasted victory there but hoodoos are there to be broken and two fine solo efforts from the mercurial Willie Hamilton allowed that to happen as HIBS triumphed 2-1 Group topping HIBS then hosted Falkirk at Easter Road and the bairns gave a good account of themselves despite going down 3-2 thanks to goals from Cormack (pen) Scott and John Baxter

Things were certainly going well for the Hibees as they made the short trip to Tynecastle and left with a point in a 2-2 draw Cormack and Martin getting the goals in a tight even game Dunfermline then arrived at Easter Road looking for revenge and duly got it in the shape of a 2-1 win Martin scoring for HIBS his 33rd of the season

To qualify for the semi final HIBS had to win at Brockville and hope that the result between Hearts and Dunfermline worked out in their favour The first part was achieved thanks to goals from Cormack (pen)Stevenson and Jimmy O’Rourke the youngster earning his chance after scoring 25 goals in that seasons reserve League Thankfully for HIBS things went their way and they qualified to meet Motherwell in a two legged semi final the first being at Easter Road

Things looked promising for another trip to the final when the greens beat Motherwell 2-0 at Easter Road thanks to a couple of cracking goals from Peter Cormack and Eric Stevenson but four days later the Steelmen had reversed that score at the end of the regulation 90 minutes meaning the game went into extra time Sad to say that the wheels came off the bus for HIBS at this stage and despite two goals from Cormack ( pen ) and Quinn the hosts scored four more to win 6-2 and end the HIBS defence of the trophy

Hibs finished seventh in this season reaching the semi finals of the Scottish Cup and were knocked out of Europe by Anderlecht without losing a game

In this past week HIBS had defeated Celtic 3-1 at home lost in midweek 1-3 at Airdrie ‘ Goals’ McGinlay scoring our goal and Justin Fashanu scoring a brace for them and defeated Motherwell at home on this Saturday

On the same day Kevin McAllister was ripping Hearts a new one at crumbling Brockville as Falkirk thumped Hearts 6-0

One week later HIBS would lose 1-3 to Dundee at Dens Park and in the last game of the season Partick Thistle would beat us 1-0 at Easter Road Gerry Britton scoring the only goal just before half-time and Gareth Evans would see red

Hibernian secured second place in the Championship and a Premiership playoff semifinal berth by beating Falkirk

Alan Stubbs’s side knew a win would guarantee them the runners up spot and took an early lead when Boyle intercepted a pass near halfway exchanged passes with Scott Allan before tucking safely home

Falkirk tried to bounce back and were unsuccessful with attempts from Tom Taiwo which took a deflection past the post and two headed attempts from John Baird and Craig Sibbald who had scored the Bairns winner in the recent Scottish Cup Semi Final at Hampden

Just before half time the Falkirk defence failed to clear a cross and Cummings calmly collected and rounded Jamie McDonald with ease before tapping home

HIBS lost Jordon Forster to an ankle injury early into the second half but it did not unsettle their rhythm and Dominic Malonga caught the Bairns defence up the park on 77 minutes as they chased a way back into the game to calmly take a Cummings pass in his stride to race clear and confidently place the ball beyond the advancing MacDonald to secure all three points

Hibernian took a big step towards Scottish Premier League survival after victory over Aberdeen moved them five points clear of the relegation spot

Griffiths proved key when he drilled the ball across the six yard line for the unfortunate Mark Reynolds to deflect into his own net on seven minutes. HIBS were dominating and OHanlon flicked a header into the back of the net from a Griffiths corner to double the visitors’ advantage 10 minutes later

Aberdeen striker Scott Vernon volleyed home after Gavin Rae set him up with a header early into the second half but despite looking nervy HIBS survived a few narrow escapes and held on to take all three points

Failure to beat Dunfermline the week after the Hearts game was really the final straw for HIBS Even a creditable draw with Celtic, still short of blocking Rangers ten in a row, was no good as first Dunfermline and then Aberdeen both won crucial games to take them out of reach. Dundee United themselves had been sucked into the relegation battle and defeat here would have left them facing Rangers to guarantee survival

Hibs led for forty minutes after Brebners goal on the half hour but capitulated in the last twenty minutes to two late Kjell Olofsson strikes which came much against the run of play HIBS had all the possession but couldn’t deliver a second goal that might have sealed victory Looking at the final table it is that inability to win which did for us We didn’t concede the most goals nor lose the most matches nor throw more points away in draws We were equal scorers and we could only win six out of thirty six games that was the legacy Jim Duffy’s shambolic reign had left us we had just forgotten how to win

I do not think I have ever been so scunnered after a HIBS match sick to the pit of my stomach as the two late United goals went into the HIBS rigging leaving my wee boy in tears and shattering the hopes of the 13000 + HIBS fans in the late afternoon sunshine

As I said before being a HIBS fan it is the hope that kills you

I remember the Arab players and fans being delighted and almost apologetic at the final whistle

I remember being one of the 3500 that rocked up to Easter Road that sunny afternoon for a run of the mill end of the season league game versus Dundee United my heart full of dread for the night that lay ahead as a confident but unknown to me virus ridden Hearts team headed to Dens Park only needing ONE point to lift the Premiership

I was in my usual position in the old North Enclosure downhill end when the ball went out for a throw in for United beside us late into the second half. As the United player was wrestling with the bouncing ball trying to take a quick throw in Albert Kidd was spinning in the Hearts box scooping a loose bouncing ball from a Dundee corner high into the top of the Hearts net The ructions started in the North Wing Stand above me next thing I know complete strangers were jumping on me shouting “Dundee have scored” This went all around the ground spreading to the East which turned into an audible roar as if a goal had just been scored The United player about to take the throw in hesitated as if there was something he was missing giving the Ref a quick glance before carrying on with his throw in

This phantom roar was to be repeated a second time minutes later as Albert Kidd sasheyed deep into the Hearts box completing a one two with ex Hibby Graeme Harvey before burying the ball with great aplomb past a disconsolate Henry Smith who never had a save to make in the whole of the first half now found himself picking the ball out of the net for a second time his and Hearts’ title dreams lying in tatters

Rangers just needed one point to win the Premiership from this Tuesday night fixture Rangers were without two first team goalies so went with young Colin Scott in goal
HIBS were excellent Big Tommy McIntyre never gave Mark Hateley a kick Kevin McAllister and Michael O’Neill tormented Rangers on the wings Jim Leighton denied Rangers with three world class saves and Keef Keef Keef delivered the coup de grace when he scored a glorious header just after half-time in front of a packed Dunbar End

It was the last match played at Easter Road where standing was allowed and ended with the East doing the Hibees Bounce and singing ‘Can you hear the Rangers sing?’

Results elsewhere meant that Rangers won the League in any case

In the two remaining fixtures HIBS were hammered 0-4 at Dens Park by Jim Duffy’s relegated Dundee side and drew 0-0 with Killie at home in front of a large away support and a closed East ( Killie needed one point to stay up).

Hibs were in deep relegation trouble Tynecastle had not been a very happy stamping ground for HIBS in recent years and when half time brought with it a 2-0 deficit that trend seemed set to continue In a stirring second half however during which HIBS lost Willie Toner with a dislocated shoulder the ten men from Easter Road came storming back and eventually drew 3-3 thanks to goals from Scott (2) and Fraser. Late in the game with the scores tied the Hearts keeper Gordon Marshall pulled off a wonder save to deny Fraser his second and Hibs’ fourth but at least a vital point was saved and HIBS lived to fight another day and things got even better when the news filtered through that Celtic had defeated Clyde

Hibs took the lead after a flowing move in the 11th minute when Nish converted David Wotherspoon’s low cross from close range but Motherwell were level in the 16th minute. Jutkiewicz beat Ian Murray inside the box and cut the ball across the face of goal for Giles Coke to smash home his first goal for the club

Hibernian took just four minutes to regain the lead when Nish’s scuffed shot from eight yards squeezed under John Ruddy’s body HIBS moved further ahead when a slack passback by Coke was seized upon by Riordan who rounded Ruddy and although pushed wide managed to squeeze the ball home from a tight angle

Nish completed his hat-trick in the 36th minute the former Kilmarnock striker slid Riordan’s low cross into the bottom corner which prompted some Motherwell fans to head for the exits but their team pulled a goal back in the 39th minute when Sutton headed Jim O’Brien’s right wing cross into the bottom corner

Motherwell’s hopes of a comeback were undone in the 56th minute as Stokes stroked home at the far post and he grabbed his second in the 65th minute when he diverted Riordan’s driven cross home at the near post

The home side maintained the scoring rate two minutes later when Coke redeemed himself by netting a rebound after O’Brien’s 25 yard drive had cannoned off the post before the goals tally moved into double figures in the 72nd minute when Smith fumbled Hateley’s inswinging free-kick over his line

Sutton then reduced the deficit to one as he towered above the HIBS defence to head home O’Brien’s corner Motherwell then got a penalty in the 87th minute when Smith was adjudged to have brought down Jutkiewicz in the box but he redeemed himself diving to his left to parry away Forbes’ effort

The scoring was not finished however when in the second minute of injury time Jutkiewicz latched on to a long ball and unleashed a worldy volley from an acute angle into Smith’s faraway top corner

Not an ideal result from a HIBS point of view at the time it felt like a kick in the nuts and three points definitely lost rather than a point gained On the bright side we were part of one of the best games ever in the SPL the highest aggregate score and even better we ended up finishing fourth and qualifying for Europe thanks to an excellent away win at Dundee United and a double from Colin Nish four days later

Ross reacted with a tactical switch pushing last weekend’s hat-trick scorer Stevie Mallan upfront to support striker Loy - a move that paid off with half an hour to play Kyle Maginnis drove into the box and played in Mallan who in turn found Loy and the on-loan Dundee striker fired home from 16 yards

With 10 man Raith Rovers beating Ayr United - that strike joyously greeted by the 1800 travelling support - ensured Saints escaped a second bottom finish and a relegation play off

HIBS top scorer Jason Cummings had a late chance to score the winner but his shot whistled inches wide of Billy O’Brien’s left hand post and as Muir blew the final whistle both sets of fans were able to celebrate for very different reasons

Oh dear! This match was a dress rehearsal for the upcoming 2001 Scottish Cup Final versus a very strong and physical Celtic side. Hibs had injury problems and had to play Dirk Lehmann at centre back. HIBS competed well and had several chances to score but were ultimately torn apart by Champions Celtic

A Jackie MacNamara double had Celtic ahead at half time and this was no different in the second half with Larrson, Stubbs (scoring with a header after being out with serious illness for several months ) and Moravcik piling on the agony

The excellent on-loan striker Marc Libbra scored a late double for HIBS to make the scoreline look more respectable

Just under 8000 fans were at Easter Road as the North and South Stands were under reconstruction

Relegation threatened Hearts took the lead midway through the first half when John Colquhoun skinned Joe Tortolano on the right and whipped in a great cross for David Hagen to power home at the back post The former Ibrox kid then headed off the line at the other end but that was just a taster of things to come

HIBS had the game by the scruff of the neck after the break but it took the introduction of Kevin Harper for Kevin McAllister 12 minutes into the second half to give them that cutting edge

The little striker took a mere six minutes to slice open Hearts defence with a run and cross that Mickey Weir bulleted home at the back post Then Weir whose brilliant close control gave Hearts problems all day released Wright to score the killer second four minutes later While Hearts were still recovering from that blow Kevin Harper was tapping home hibs’ third after Craig Nelson had brilliantly parried a Pat McGinlay drive into his path

Tommy McLean felt the turning point was a magnificent Jim Leighton save from Hagen shortly before HIBS notched their equaliser but in reality the game turned on his side’s reaction to losing that leveller to little Mickey Weir

106000 crammed into Hampden for the battle of the greens and HIBS fans were optimistic after a good run of results and a display of fast flowing attractive football that had easily disposed of Rangers in the recent Scottish Cup Semi Final Replay

It was not to be however and the vastly more experienced and excellent Celtic side dominated throughout and easily won this match. HIBS went into the second half only 1-2 down after Alan Gordon had pulled a goal back and Eddie Turnbull decided to throw caution to the wind. As the HIBS jerseys surged forward the clinical Celtic forwards took advantage of the large gaps that appeared in the HIBS defence. HIBS were unlucky not to score but did not do themselves justice it was a hard lesson learned the better team on the day had won and in his post match interview Eddie Turnbull told the waiting media “We’ll be back!”

Stanton quite rightly known to be a top quality footballer but was also a fierce tackler.

Was there that painful day but luckily most youths in my streets were Hibbies, no Celtic and only one older Hertz guy at the end of the road who didnt go much to Tiny. A small number of Hun ‘supporters’ but they would have preferred us to win.
