I tried Jamie's once a couple of years ago and found it to be overpriced crap. Maybe it has improved.

I've eaten a couple of times there Matty.
The setting is really nice, as is the layout inside.
Food seemed decent enough, though I rarely go out to Italian restaurants so I'm not the best judge. Last time I was there I had a wild mushroom risotto which was prepared just fine and was substantially portioned. Other dishes at the table looked good as well.
Couldn't fault the service and the prices seemed reasonable enough. If it's dinner rather than lunch then parking is easy, given where it's located.
Went to the Guru tonight and found it to be very good. The naan bread was about the size of a canoe so don't think about ordering one for each person. Had a hot and spicy jalfrezei which was really good and the guy must have beat the crap out of the lamb for about five hours with a lump hammer to get it so tender. Thoroughly enjoyable and the service was very friendly, and well priced as well. It's a byob place but worth a visit if you enjoy Indian food.
Guru is really good my only complaint the last time was the sauce was a little thin.
Monteiths - nothing spectacular, food was 'nice' but would expect nothing less for the price. Highlight was the crispy bacon and butterscotch, went surprisingly well together.
The price of the cocktails is unbelievable, I had one at nearly £10 and it tasted like a kids slushy.
Decent but probably more for the tourist crowd. Would not rush back.
Eastern Pavilion again tonight :-)
Edit: It was excellent again, very busy with folk from the rugby but still great friendly service and fantastic food.
Dining in Divino's on Wednesday night, complete new authentic Italian menu from the Italian Head chef. Recently had a kitchen refit which has doubled the size of the kitchen so looking forward to some great food.
Had a really nice meal in Mother India's Cafe at the west end of Argyle Street, Glasgow. They serve tasty Indian grub, in tapas portions. Great selection, reasonably priced.
Riverlife - Caribbean restaurant on dalry road.
Very nice food, good sized portions and reasonably priced. Extremely well priced if you also have a tastecard.
I called scallops wrapped in prosciutto followed by lamb ribs with potato dauphinoise and a can of coke (forgot it was BYOB) for £15!
A lot of other dishes on the menu looked good also - I'll be back!
OTRO - Coates Crescent (used to be the Indian Cavalry Club)
Was there yesterday after the rugby, superb Scottish food expertly cooked with some great flavours from a very talented chef.Presentation and quality of food really was good with excellent varied bottled beer selection and decent wine list. Six of us spent about 3 hours in there and service was top notch. Well worth a visit.
Tried Passorn Thai Brasserie on Hanover Street. Was excellent. Service top notch and food was absolutely brilliant. Quite pricy, although they do a set menu for £12.50ish, but worth it imo.
Went to Chaoproya a couple of days later. Service again excellent but food wasn't quite on a par with Passorn. The view is obviously brilliant but truth be told I was a bit disappointed overall. I had been before and would say it has been better previously.
Finally went for a drink at Hoot The Redeemer. Hipster by numbers and overpriced. Oh and I also ended up in the Wetherspoons at Waverley that used to be Jimmy Chungs; £4.05 a pint of Tennents or £4.95 and Amstel. What the **** is that all about?
Had a realy good thai chicken burger in daylight robbery last night.
Got a takeaway pizza from there on Sunday. Was really good. Wouldn't go as far to say the best pizza I've had in Edinburgh but I'd definitely go back. £5.90 for a takeaway 12" margharita aswell which is very good.
Best pizza in Edinburgh for me is from Dough on Rose Street.:agree:
Has anyone tried pizza from Soderberg/Peters Yard? Seen a few reviews in papers recently ranking it as one of the best in Edinburgh, it's certainly not somewhere I would have went looking for pizza.
Tried Dough on Rose Street today and was bitterly disappointed after all the hype I had read about it. It doesn't even come in my top three in Edinburgh and nowhere near the quality or Oregano or La Favorita in my opinion. We sat in the shop so the comparison to the others I have mentioned was fair as I always sit in there too. Massive doughy crust, far too big which actually reduced the toppings to that of a 7" pizza instead of the 10" we both ordered, far too much cheese which made the pizza too wet and overall pretty average, I won't be back.
Was at 1926 last week again as well. Had the pizza fritta to start which was a new addition to the menu since last time i visited. Was really good but a 'pizza' starter followed by a traditional pizza definitely wasnt a good idea :greengrin . prices are excellent for the quality.
The last time I went to a restaurant was 13 years ago!
I was a Salesman for a food service company and knowing how little items cost it made me question the mark up.
Think of this: we happily order an 8oz fillet or whatever but when we order a fish dish there is no mention of weight.
Sometimes fish is more expensive than steak. A complete rip off, b0ys. And girls.
I'd be keen to know what sort of fish is a rip-off.
If it really bothers you, you could always ask the waiter to show you the fish prior to ordering so you i)know the size and ii)can check the freshness - FWIW - fish is NOT overpriced. You go catch it in the deep seas and tell me it isn't value for money.
Indeed - I'd imagine that pollution will happily order a delivery pizza - probably the food with the highest mark-up yet he won't eat out
This restaurant is over in Paphos/Cyprus so perhaps a new thread is required but thought I'd add anyway as folk will be going on their travels soon and Paphos may be on someones itinerary.
After eating too much Cypriot Greek foods we wanted a "proper" Steakhouse, we were advised by many local business owners to try "The Lodge" and we were not disappointed. It's a steakhouse with a South African flavour (the place is swimming in Braai sauce), the owners are from that neck of the woods and have worked in hospitality for a long time.
I was initially going to have a starter followed by t-bone but I was convinced to share a prime rib with my wife. The uncooked weight was 1.2Kg's so no starter was required. Even though it was a large chunk of flesh we opted for it to be cooked medium rare and my wife was a little concerned it would be blue/uncooked in the middle,,,,it wasn't. The steak was cooked thoroughly and although red in the middle it was warm, buttery & tasty. The sides of mash, wedges & greens were exactly that, a side show as the meat was the main event!
Price wise it was dear for the area but the quality was excellent and washed down with a not to shabby Bordeaux the bill for 3 of us (Daughter elected for the rib-eye) including tip was $150. Considering our average spends for an evening meal was around $70 you can see how relatively it wasn't cheap.

Going to the Ghurka Cafe, Cockburn Street on Saturday night. Anyone been recently?
Was at the Pompadour for the first time on Wednesday. It's a stunning setting.
While it's silly expensive, the food was delicious and seasonal and I would go back without hesitation (once my credt card has regained consciousness). Seven course tasting menu and I would happily have every one of them as a full course in its own right, which was a surprise as I wasn't really anticipating a couple of them being so good - one was an asparagus and goats' cheese (not a huge fan of ether) dish early on that just really worked and the second was a blue cheese whipped cream that managed to be surprisingly really subtle.
You expect the service at somewhere like that to be faultless and it was (though I did overhear one of the waiters at the next table assuming two women were mother and daughter. Turned out they were sisters....ooyah!)
If you're talking South West Cyprus, then these two need to be on your list:

Had the best Chinese meal ever in Karen's Unicorn last night. Fantastic!
Ghurka Cafe was very good, very rustic interior, great food and service from our Nepalese waitress who is soon to be opening her own restaurant.
Yeah Karens is the best Chinese I've ever had. It's not cheap but you get what you pay for. I'm a regular. Haha
I was at Namaste Kathmandu on Forrest Road last night. Very very nice. All the meat was BBQ'd. Really really nice. Would highly recommend. Nvery reasonable too.
Has anyone here been to Restaurant Mark Greenaway?
I think The Abercromby Place restaurant is an off shoot from one in St Stephens Street some years ago.
Daughter treated us to a takeaway from St Andrews in Porty last night, opted for doner kebab, horrible, meat was like strips of leather, pitta bread bone hard, salad was just a pile of mush & the chips were re-fried. Makes sticking to the diet a lot easier now 😧
I was at Tuk Tuk tonight, really enjoyed it. Good Indian food, good service,BYOB and great value.
Got a delivery from the curry club in Corstorphine as I'd heard good things about them and to say it was bang average would be being nice to them.
A bit out the way but if ever in Skye the new restaurant in Portree called Cuchullin is excellent . Tonight I ate in Creelers in Broadford. The seafood gumbo was as perfect as a meal could be
I acknowledge I'm a bit of a cheerleader for La Garrigue but have to big it up again.
We were there for lunch yesterday, less than fifteen pounds for three courses of good Languedoc cuisine.
The service was exemplary, couldn't fault it.
Easily the best French restaurant in Edinburgh.
Was at The Blackbird for brunch last week. Was decent enough and reasonably priced.
Had dinner in Amber at the Scotch Whisky Experience. Food was pretty decent but it was pretty unimaginative stuff and was obviously aimed at the tourist market. There's better in the price range in Edinburgh.
I thought it was good but not enough to take me back.
I'd happily eat there if I was looking for somewhere before the Kings for example, but it wouldn't be up if there if I was just looking for an Indian.
Mother India and Dishoom both great. I'll be at Kismot next week so will give a review - last time I was there the food was nice but had to leave a lot because of slow service and a festival show we had booked.
This place has been mentioned too many times for me to ignore again. Both here and on the Corstorphine Facebook page it's highly rated.
I had a bang average meal there last Christmas, the low point was the greasy mushroom rice. Having regular takeways and sit-ins at Corstorphines other Indian restaurants (St Johns/Abidas/Spice lounge/The Curry House) I'd be foolish not to give it one more go!
Asha at Western Corner is a great takeaway.
Anyone ever tried La Petite Folie at Randolph Place?
I had a very nice lunch last week there.
Paesano in Glasgow thats twice been there a highly rated pizza place but for me the pizza is soggy and not a big fan.
Has anyone here had pizza in Naples and was it wet? I hold the crust up at edge and the slice just flops down.
Not in Naples but I visited Capri, Positano and Sorrento a couple of weeks ago; pizzas in the restaurants were first class(for my preference) thin crispy bases, enough cheese & tomato and very fresh fresh meat and/or veg. On our first night we arrived pretty late and we're directed to a local cafe, pizza was pretty doughy, had loads of cheese on it and too much oil, toppings fresh and tasty and place was rammed with locals. Pasta , gnocchi and seafood were top notch too.
Of course there will and I accept that no problem, I have to say I've not tried the Eastern Pavilion which is a sin considering how long I've been living in the area. I shall see if Mrs Hermit Crab fancies trying it one night as she's fond of the St J Curry Club too.
Anyone been to the Chophousesteak restaurant that Fontaine tweeted about a couple of weeks ago. Think there's 2 in Edinburgh. Apologies if it's already on this thread
Leith one on Constitution Street is very good. Finally tried Market Street a few weeks back and no comparison. Staff were up their own erse and food was bang average despite being a similar menu.
Tbh even having enjoyed the Leith one I wouldn't say it's the best steak in Edinburgh.
I'd agree with that. We went to the Market Street one first and it was OK but not great and the staff were a bit pretentious. We were then invited to a friend's birthday lunch at the Leith one and it was way better even with better service even though we were a big group.
My wife went to the Leith one at lunch time and it was dreadful so she decided to complain and they couldn't have been any better. They gave us a free meal for two and didn't charge us for the drinks we had and it was absolutely superb.
Would definitely go back.
Posted about this place before but been at Dine Edinburgh at the Traverse twice again in the last couple of weeks. The market or pre-theatre menu is ridiculously good value, with the food being very good and really well executed. Service is tremendous and the location and set-up are great.
It's been a bit of a go-to restaurant when attending the Usher Hall, because the location is so good, but has shifted into the kind of place I would choose for going out with friends in its own right - because of the qualities described above,
Okay we are regulars, and recognised as such by the staff but had another fantastic lunch with wine at La Piazza this afternoon.
Heading up to the Bridge at Ratho for tea, looking forward to it
Had an excellent meal at Bridge Inn. Only disappointment for one of us, was the Sunday Roast was chicken and not beef
Staff very courteous and polite
Will go again, but probably not on a Sunday as it was very very busy
Anyone know if this privately owned?
Been to the leith depot a couple times recently. Had the skate first time which came with, prawns, mash and greens. Fish and chips more recently. Both were good and would go back. Focus of the menus is definitely on seafood although they do have other options.
Stand out from eating there though is the scottish affogatto. Vanilla ice cream and deep fried mars bar toped with a shot of buckfast.
Went to scotties for lunch yesterday and it was great value.
Far cry from the last time I was there and the pub was dying on its arse, well played to whoever is responsible for that turnaround.
Interested to hear your thoughts.
I'm no foodie by any stretch of the imagination so pub grub suits me down to the ground and it was the value of it and service that really impressed me. Was almost bang on £20 for two main meals and a couple of pints of juice.
We were at the fort earlier in the day and were toying with the idea of a five guys but I couldn't bring myself to spend the best part of £30 on fast food that's alright but nothing special imo, the volume of the music in there is far too loud for me not to get annoyed by it too.
Stuck record for La Garrigue but had lunch there at the weekend and then attended last night for a tasting menu based around wines from a vineyard in the Languedoc - La Garrigue's owner had become friends with the owners and organised an evening around it.
The food was delicious, highlight was a reduced red wine sauce with shallots and marrow fat accompanying monkfish. It was exceptional, especially given I would never associate a red wine sauce or a red wine pair with monkfish.
All told, it's consistently been the best food I've had in Edinburgh, very reasonably priced, in a lovely setting with great views and fantastic service. I couldn't recommend it more.
Finally got to dishoom! Was really good. I recommend going with people you have similar tastes with and can readily share good as it allows you to try more.
Service was good, food was good, got all we could eat and a couple drinks each for under £40 including tip. I'd recommend trying a lassi for anyone that goes; not sure if you can get it in supermarkets - but it's somewhere between milk and yogurt and comes with various flavourings (mango and fennel for me).
Adding to the previous chop house chat, i went to the leith one for breakfast last weekend. For me its up there with the scran and scailie for best breakfast in Edinburgh. The portions were unbelieveable; Huge wheel sausage, and the haggis and black pudding come as big rectangular chunks. Definitely a breakfast to go home for a rest after rather than to start your day on.
Was also at andrew ushers recently. Good pub burgers at a very reasonable prices. Always nice stuff on tap to go along with it as well.
Why was that? Genuinely interested.
I've been going for about the last five years but I believe it's been around for a lot longer than that.
The current manager seems very on the ball. The owner is doing more around wine tours and the like in the last couple of years but the food has been consistently good in my experience.
That's interesting. I knew Ramsay had bigged it up massively back around 2010 or thereabouts but didn't know he had gone back on that.
I first started going around 2012, but more consistently in the last three years, solely based on experience. Jean Michel was definitely front of house by then, and that's been the case since. More so with the focus on the wine tours, marketing and themed nights I suspect - the wine tours in particular seem to be very popular. For sure there's been turnover in the kitchen over that period!
It's not competing with Kitchin, Jack or the starred hotels but it does do genuine Languedoc cuisine with genuine Languedoc wines at a decent price given it's in the city centre. That's one of my favourite types of cuisine and it's hard to see past it!
There's not many decent Indian restaurants in the Livingston area with Khushis in Mid Calder being the best.
However, the Bay Leaf in Pumpherston is now up there.
Had tried this restaurant years ago but had not gone back as the food was only average. Had noticed earlier this year that there were several very good reviews on the food so thought would have to give it another try.
Was very pleased to find it had new owners and the quality of the food was superb. It's now run by a couple of guys that had worked in Khushis & Mithas in Edinburgh & has a chef that had been in Khushis also.
Since then my wife and I have been back several times and enjoyed the food very much. We'll certainly be regulars there from now on and would recommend any lovers of Indian food to give it a try if you're in the area, doubt you'll be disappointed and like us will likely return for more.
Had a fabulous dad and daughter day out to celebrate her 40th and my 70th at L'Enclume, Simon Rogan's gourmet mecca in Cartmel, Cumbria. We had the 17 item tasting menu with the accompanying 'wine flight' interrupted by a superb cheese board and yet more dedicated wines. The three hour extravaganza was unbelievably delicious and stands head and shoulders above any restaurant experience I've ever had. I remember seeing it on 'The Trip' a few years ago and thought I'd maybe get there one day. Another item scored off the bucket list. I'll go back for my 80th. :top marks
Has anybody done lunch or dinner at Colonnades at the Signet Library
Lunch today at Castle Terrace for the wives birthday. Fantastic experience food was incredible.
Not a massive foodie myself and not bothered about Michelin stars but was told by a mate who's right into that sort of thing that since losing theirs last year they have really upped their game and working hard to impress to get it back.
I've heard from a few people that it's the best restaurant in Edinburgh right now. It got such a bad press for a while and lost its star and rightly so, but they've made a real effort to turn things around. The exact opposite of the place in Henderson Street that just refused to accept any sort of criticism.
Went to Maison Bleue over the weekend and it was pretty good. Setting is nice and the food overall was pretty good but i'd sidestep the fillet and go for the cheaper options as it wasnt worth £30.
Somewhere a bit further away but ate in Rocpool,on the shores of the Ness in Inverness city centre on Tuesday.
The service was incredibly attentive, despite the restaurant being fully-booked and hence very busy. As you would imagine, almost all of the other customers were tourists and just hearing the staff talking to the surrounding tables demonstrated how strong they were on customer service, explaining dishes in a polite, friendly and engaging manner.
Scallops for starter, which were as fresh as you like. The highlight was venison for the main. It was potentially slightly rare for most folk but absolutely perfect for me - I will order venison pretty regularly when eating out and I can't remember ever having it so well-prepared.
Close second to the main was the dessert. I'm not sweet-toothed so invariably will go for the cheese board. They promised three cheeses, but provided four. The three promised ones were a hard, soft and blue all made from ewe's milk. I love sheep's milk cheese so it was about as perfect a finisher as it could possibly get!
Mix of wines and port by the glass, which were all fine. It's not cheap but absolutely well worth it and on a par or better with the majority of places I've eaten in, in Edinburgh. Will be rebooking for next time I'm up in Inverness.
Went to Martin Wishart for lunch on Saturday (quite different to my usual pre match routine) and a 12:15 booking gave us time for a 5 course tasting menu and a quick drink before kick off.
The food was excellent and it's amazing how much flavour they can pack in to the various small elements of the dishes. The plates were like a work of art. Very difficult to fault any of it. The service was also excellent as you'd expect.
The only small issue I have is that it was £75 for the 5 course taster (£120 with wine pairing), which I thought was pretty steep for a lunch menu. Castle Terrace, which is equally good only don't think it has a star, was a lot cheaper for lunch - £40 IIRC, which I think is more consistent with other similar restaurants.
Looking for recommendations for the best Indian in or around the city centre. Needs to be somewhere that can cater for table of 10. Suggestions please.
