NHS Lothian has halted non-urgent elective operations amid staff shortages and rising patient demand.
The health board has also postponed non-urgent outpatient appointments.
The move comes two days after NHS Borders cancelled all scheduled routine operations until the end of next week due to pressure on services.
NHS Lothian said increased levels of staff sickness, combined with holidays and those having to self isolate, led to a “significant reduction” in nurses and midwives in the previous two months.

The end of a school board meeting in Franklin, parents threatening the medical experts because they dared to suggest masks in schools was a good idea.
I know this involves children so my reply isn't totally relevant.
However I'm reaching a point where I think we have to stop inconveniencing a majority to protect a minority. This isn't comparable to when we locked down everyone to protect vulnerable groups, there was good reason for that as we all played our part in seeding and spreading the virus (or not doing so if we followed the rules)
We are now approaching a point in the UK and much of the developed world at which everyone who wants a significant level of protection against serious illness has it. As and when booster vaccines become available then those who rolled up their sleeve first time around will do so again and early data, linked in a post earlier in the thread, suggests that could be a gamechanger in terms of transmission. If people choose not to accept that protection then fine. They will get ill (there's no maybe about it) and some will die. Let the rest of us continue on a path back to normality, inconvenience those who won't do the selfless thing by banning them from certain arenas and focus our efforts on vaccinating the world and those in developing nations who want protection but can't access it yet.
If some ignorant ******** chooses to listen to an equally ignorant twat on YouTube over mountains of peer reviewed science then let them deal with the consequences. Be that exclusion from things they want to do or illness. I'm beyond pandering to mobs like those filmed above now.
:agree:
Agree with every single word of this.
I hope we bring in vaccine passports for near enough everything. Pubs, restaurants, large events, travel. Make it virtually impossible for unvaccinated people to enjoy life if they’re not going to take the vaccine, by far the most effective weapon we have against this virus.
I’ve seen numerous people sharing a post on my Instagram from Josh Taylor comparing masks to a fart getting out of your arse cheeks. And these people actually allow posts like this to help them decide whether they want to get vaccinated etc.
You want to decide not to get vaccinated because someone who gets punched in the head for a living says so rather than listen to the thousands of scientists who say to do it? Crack on. But **** off and don’t leave your house because you can’t get in anywhere in that case.
32,700 cases and 100 deaths registered in the UK today.
I agree with all of that, the people choosing not to be vaccinated should be the ones being restricted now.
Even my 17 yr old son who didn’t really think he needed it has thought about the wider issues this week so went off to a drop in centre and got vaccinated today while I was working.
I agree that folk who've positively chosen not to take the vaccine should be left to show the courage of their convictions, but what about those who can't take the vaccine?

More and more people saying we shouldn't be giving booster jags in the west when most of the world don't have 1 dose. 2 doses makes covid less harmful to death than the flu. Jcvi think its unethical, government aren't budging

Sajid Javid and other ministers are very much expecting that booster doses will be administered to 30m+ people over the autumn and are working on putting the infrastructure in place.
Looking like an increasingly public clash between ministers and their advisers is on the way...
Yes, agreed. The problem we've got is that neither Holyrood or Westminster seem to have the stomach for vaccine passports, let alone special dispensation for the "can't" population. Instead they are marginalised by what's effectively a play to the lowest common denominator.
That's one of the reason's we all need to take the vaccine, to offer those who can't some herd immunity. Those who have decided not to get vaccinated have for whatever reason intentionally decided that their wants/needs come ahead of the herd's, fine, then let them no longer be part of the herd.
I started this reply by typing that the anti-ID arguments were in "peacetime" but have to be swept aside in the crisis we're dealing with. I suspect you'll be pleased to know that reading it stopped me on my tracks - the very last time you want a participation programme to be set up is when there's a crisis!
However, I would like to hear more noise from Holyrood about it. Stupidly, or not, I trust them not to set up an abusive system. Are aspects of it reserved? Not that that would justify it as we all know Nicola loves a wee wander into the Forbidden Land (with my full support, natch! :-)). Where is she? Why not?

80,000 in the US now in hospital with covid, that number is doubling every 13 days. It should be their biggest hospital wave in around 10 days. Also of note 81% of cases are in trump states.
Although uptake is better than alot of countries, older groups and those with morbidities are much lower uptake than most in the west. So whilst our big spike in cases last month meant little hospitalisations, we had almost 100% uptake in over 60s.
Most states are fairly open even with huge cases sadly too. Stories like this is even more depressing when they have plenty vaccines

Florida mother dies from Covid-19 days after giving birth
The cost of NHS coronavirus tests for international arrivals to the UK have been reduced, the government has said.
Test and Trace tests have been cut from £88 to £68 for people arriving from green-listed countries and for those coming from amber-listed countries who are fully vaccinated.
Meanwhile, the price of two tests for amber arrivals who have not had both jabs has been cut from £170 to £136.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-58206517
The problem with updating these figures now is that they include many youngsters who are not adults. Working in the vaccination centre about half of those attending are 16 or 17 with a few younger vulnerable children. The number of first vaccines had been steady at about 2,000 a day but has gone up in the last few days to about 5,000 and is due to this age group being vaccinated.
It is hard to work out what is going on in the USA. They have about 128,000 cases per day at present and although they are increasing the doubling time is slowing and is about 17 days. 128,000 cases sounds a lot but with 5 times the population of the UK they have less cases per head than year. I guess the main difference is that the cases are concentrated in a handful of states and almost 25% of the most vulnerable population is not vaccinated.
No Scotland (and presumably the rest of the UK) too.
When I replied to Calum's post yesterday about requirements for travelling to Spain, I linked to a page on the Scottish Government website which said the test you had to do on your return from an amber country cost £88.
That same page now says the cost is £68.

It's a step in the right direction but still a bit too high for me.
I wasn't too fussed about going on my trip to Cyprus next month which I've had booked since the start of last year and already deferred once, but paying nearly £70 for a test has pretty much made my mind up.
If I'm going to Cyprus as a fully vaccinated person, the only Covid-19 related requirement is for me to complete a Cyprus flight pass before travelling. I'd hope that we are taking note of how it's going in Cyprus and several other EU countries which have removed all requirements for providing a negative test for travellers who are fully vaccinated.
Some passengers have complained of being crammed into carriages with strangers refusing to wear masks on Welsh trains, despite Covid laws.
In Wales face masks remain a legal requirement on public transport, while in England they are only advised.
A number of passengers told BBC Wales people were ignoring calls to put on masks, leaving them feeling unsafe.
Transport for Wales (TfW) said it was urging travellers to wear masks on all services.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-58144669
I was on a couple of trains yesterday. Only short hops, Brunstane to Haymarket then Haymarket to Waverley later in the day.
I would say those of us wearing masks stood out more than those who weren't. A definite majority not wearing. The no alcohol rule was being largely ignored as well.
I'm looking at going out to Croatia and would appreciate a bit of help on the testing side. I can see that on the way back I'll need a PCR within 2 days of return to the UK, and I have to use the 1 Scot Gov approved provider.
But Croatia requires a PCR test result taken within 72 hrs of departure to get in. I'm a bit unclear where I get this. Do I have to use the same Scot Gov provider? Or can I use anyone (I.e. Order a PCR through the NHS)?
Both my partner and I will be fully vaccinated before we go but I don't think that makes a difference to entry.
You're correct, the fact you're double vaccinated makes no difference in Croatia.
To be allowed entry into Croatia, all travellers from the UK regardless of their vaccination status must present either a negative COVID-19 antigen test, which must not be older than 48 hours, or a negative PCR test, no older than 72 hours on arrival. People travelling to Croatia from the UK are not permitted to do these tests on arrival in Croatia. Passengers arriving without a valid test certificate will be denied entry to Croatia.
Any private test seems to be fine.

Can I just say a big thanks to all that post answers to the questions on this thread. Trying to book a holiday just now is a bit of an information minefield so it’s very much appreciated :greengrin
Friend is back from Croatia, said it was easy. Got a private test beside airport but could use any. Quick through airport then a test before he came home, said everywhere was advertising them for 25 euro. Then test when home, although not heard from track and trace over a week later now. Another in Spain says similar.
Adds 160 per person if Croatia about 90 for Spain, but save much more than that on the prices just now.

Yep 1,071 deaths over 7 days not yesterday so an average of 153 per day.
In contrast in the UK we've averaged around 87 deaths per day despite having more than 3 times the population of Florida.
Florida's death toll isn't quite as bad as it was previously made out to be but it's still considerably worse than ours.
Ah cheers weird they have changed it. So 6 times worse than ours per head. Problem is they deaths are from cases 4 weeks ago when 7 day average was about 5,500 cases per day. Cases are now at 20,000 a day so deaths should quadruple in the month, and case are going up vertical. Its brutal and mirrored in most red states
It was the daily mail that said it but will Spain be put on the red list for 2.9% of returning travellers testing positive? That is a lot less than our positivity rate.

The leader of New South Wales has warned this is "the worst situation Australia's been in" since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.
State Premier Gladys Berejiklian said rules would be tightened in Sydney, the state capital, which is in lockdown.
Covid fines will also go up to AU$5,000 (US$3,685; £2,656) from AU$1,000.
"This is literally a war, and we've known we've been in a war for some time, but never to this extent," Ms Berejiklian told reporters.

If the current SG close down gigs last minute in the forthcoming weeks, then they can forget my vote next time.
Ive continually stuck up for them, however there is NO excuse to cancel any gigs in Scotland.
Do it.
Regret it.
But that's not based on testing. The daily positivity rate from testing was 5.6% yesterday.
UK is in a weird situation right now as we have some of, if not the worst, numbers in Europe. But because of the high vaccine levels, are getting a bit of a free pass when comparing ourselves with other countries.

Like I said, if England had previously produced anything app wise during this crisis that actually did what it was supposed to the devolved nations might have been confident in adopting this one. However their track record is appalling both in application and cost.

If this kind of thing wasn’t devolved then we would have been part of their £37bn test and trace program. Thankfully we were not and it has saved us a lot of money. If our passport app is a little slower coming out then I still think we are ahead on the deal.
Btw, my mate is in Ibiza this week and he has had no problem getting into places.[emoji106]

The survey IS testing. They send swabs to a statistically representative sample of the population which are then processed the same way as all the other PCR tests. So even taking the English number of 1 in 75 (about 1.3%), if 2.9% of returning travellers from Spain have covid that's more than double the UK prevalence.
Our company has just cancelled phase 3 return
That's across the globe

I've said all along I wouldn't pay attention to ons figures for scot, N I or Wales. They do 100,000 tests a week less than 1000 are not from England. Its a joke but a decent judge on English numbers. Travelers are more heavily in the younger age groups, who have a much much higher positivity rate than older people
Despite the 1200 medics in the lancet saying England fully opening would cause a bloodbath, its clearly went fine. It's mainly worked because so many old people stepped up unlike America, throw in past infection being heavily waited in refusers also

Lots of countries will be looking at England for insights into how COVID relaxation could play out elsewhere – but need to look beyond comparisons of overall % vaccinated nationally, because age distribution could mean very different outcomes in terms of severe disease
They've averaged over 9,000 a week in Scotland alone over the past 6 weeks so I'll maybe continue to pay attention to the actual Office for National Statistics, whilst acknowledging their published confidence intervals, rather than random posts on the internet.
My household is part of the ONS survey group - a local rep comes at a pre-arranged time to your door once a month, you answer a series of questions and carry out a PCR swab which is taken away by the rep.
It's a very well organised and efficient operation.
