I am advised to get the flu jab every year. I dont, I'm still here
The flu jab is a relatively recent phenomenon, what did we do before it?

I've a very week immune system due to other health problems (nothing serious) and get the jags as I'm self-employed and can't afford to take to much time off work.
Something else to think about. If we did/do go into lock down for a good period of time, I'd be financially ducked.
I've got allergy induced asthma and occasionally use an inhaler.
I'm not saying it's nothing to be concerned about but the near hysteria in parts of the media is helping no one. As it stands even in China the virus has infected only 0.008% of the population and the infection rate seems to be stabilising.
I totally understand people's fears and the WHO, amongst others, seems to be treating this seriously but the general panic among people who really have little to fear isn't helpful and arguably leads to a general complacency that heightens the threat to those most at risk of developing serious illness.
I can see why it would worry you. Although I don't have underlying problems , I would be wiped out by a prolonged period of illness too.
I don't deny the doomsday scenarios don't niggle at me occasionally, but I think if it does get that bad we will all be in the same boat, and life will go on.
I know people.are panicking and maybe over reacting but id rather that than people who have just came back from.Tenerife or Italy swan about as if they are not a risk. Refusing to self.isolate etc, i personally dont think thats a huge help anyway as you can carry it without being ill apparently or be in the incubation period but people should be putting a little thought into it at least.
Not all of these are flu but a significant proportion are (the 2018 spike is apparently because a new strain emerged after the vaccine for that year was developed).

If you run back and forward across Shandwick Place blindfold you will not necessarily get run down by a bus.Quote:
Why am I not dead if I haven't taken the jab?
Plus there is a general level of immunity in the population due to previous exposure to the flu and others having taken the vaccine. This does not apply to Covid-19 which will be spreading itself in entirely fertile ground to begin with.
Total profiteering going on from Amazon on this. Charging £8 a bottle plus for pocket sized sanitizer gel that usually sells for £1.
£2 each for disposable single use face masks.
I agree, a sensible and dispassionate approach to a potential danger is a good way to go about it.
I support the measures in place at the moment, and the fact we have testing centres, and the ability to open "fever hospitals" if the need arises should be reassuring.
Keep Calm and Carry On.
Your point earlier about "unknowns" was a good one as well though.
Theoretically, in principle, a virus has the potential to have a devastating impact on humans. It is often hard to know when to stay calm and when to panic.
It can take a bit of time before understanding the nature of a virus and how best to treat it, in the meantime it can cause great human suffering. My Dad graduated as a doctor in 1979 and had various jobs between graduating and getting his first proper GP post in 1984. One of his jobs was at the health centre in Sighthill just as the HIV epidemic was taking off and the way he talks about it is terrifying. Obviously we know a lot more about that virus now and how to manage it but it caused a lot of death and suffering (and still does) before we got even close to understanding it.
As things stand, we shouldn't be panicking. Yet. But we should all be at the very least respectful of the impact this virus could have, and mindful of the fragility of certain members of our society.
