Has anyone heard this Sebastien Gorka guy before? Ex Trump advisor doing the rounds of news studios and just being completely mad, ranting about not being able to walk the streets in Malmo because of muslim rapists and so on, BBC being propagandists of political correctness. The interview degenerated into shouting and had to be cut short. These people are nudging their way into the mainstream. I see the BF woman who was retweeted now has 75,000 new followers. Which maybe was the point all along?

I've seen Gorka loads of times, usually on Hannity on Fox News. Typical rent-a-gob, albeit his delivery has a knowledgable style, it infers that he has been brought on as an expert and what he says is lapped up by Trump's core support. Despite that, I was still amazed when he got a job in Trump's administration, less so when he lasted only for a short time.

There is a story that Gorka's Hungarian connections got him the job. Carter Page and other Trump aides have made several trips to Hungary in the past 18 months and it's widely thought Hungary is a friendly territory for Russia. Basically a middle ground for meetings.

I'm not into conspiracy theories, which this may reek of. But the mainstream media are miles behind on the Mueller investigation, as you'll see today with the way Mike Flynns charges are reported. Seth Abrahmson is a great Twitter feed to follow to keep pace with this stuff.

Trumps former national security advisor Michael Flynn has plead guilty to making false statements to the FBI.

The problem is is he is not going it alone. I think this is one issue where he is being pushed along by the Evangelicals and Jews who are the firmest of friends and have long been so, at least at the administrative level of their respective faiths. When I first moved here I happened to see a program from the 80's (Reagan years) and the Evangelicals were pushing it then and promising to demolish the Dome of The Rock! And I recall Ted Cruz, one of the Republican candidates, in a 2016 town hall meeting just prior to his dropping out of the race being asked what are the five things he would do on first first day in office should he win. 'Move the capital of Israel to Jerusalem'. Although him having this thought did not shock me, I was surprised it was on his must do list on his first day in office.

I did not know that anyone actually believed there was a real 'peace process' going on. Israel's peace agreements in my mind have been modelled on the American 'peace policies' with the native American tribes. Perhaps not consciously but in effect. 'Sign the treaty' and before the ink is dry let more settlers move into the native lands and when the tribes fight back get involved to protect the settlers. Then have another peace treaty and so on and so on.

In the US government if you even propose that some defence intelligence contracts, held by Israel, are put out for tender it can end your career. Israel actually controls 100% of some defence intelligence areas here and is even responsible for over 80% of the cell phone billing, which is not carried out by the service providers. The power of the media and press here is oppressive and corrupt to extreme levels and it is no coincidence that both major parties constantly voice their strong and unwavering support of Israel.

A lot of good points there, but it's important to also remember that the US Jewish population has overwhelmingly backed the Democrats in all elections (since at least the 60s I think) and are amongst the most liberal and progressive of all minority groups. Jews voted in large numbers for Obama and for Clinton over Trump. And they don't all agree with the the powerful pro-Israel lobby groups either; the Israel lobby has much closer ties with extreme alt right groups and evangelical Christians, oddly.

Yep, you are correct in a lot of what you say.

My 'going it alone' comment referred to being the 1st world leader to publicly recognise and acknowledge Jerusalem as the Israeli capital. That's a hugely symbolic statement and act and it's clear leaders from the EU and Middle East are very wary of this line of action.

When you're as incredibly stupid as Trump is, this kind of statement makes sense.

He a stupid man, surrounded by stupid people, having been voted for by desperate people.

It is frightening that he is in the most powerful position in the world, and every time he opens his mouth in relation to North Korea, Israel/ Palestine or Iran, I am terrified of what he might stir up.

I'm going to become a father for the first time in February, and these are not days that I really want to be wishing away. But for the good of our entire species, the time that that idiot finds himself as far away from the White House (hopefully at most 3 years although I still hold out hope that he gets caught out and finds himself impeached) cannot come quick enough.

And of course now he's done it. Is this guy the stupidest man on earth? His planet sized ego and zero grasp of right and wrong, not to mention basic statesmanship, was jaw dropping but even so up until now at worst all it was doing was making the office of POTUS look ridiculous.

This is probably the first decision he has taken that is likely to get people killed, its a direct slap in the face to the Palestinians. They already see the US as Israel's biggest ally and backer, but perhaps still had some hope that they could also be relied upon to curb the worst excesses of the Israeli right wing, with this decision I would guess even in the eyes of moderate Palestinians the US has come down firmly on the side of Israel and worse the extremist side of Israeli politics. The result will be that the US will never be trusted by them to broker any peace deals and for sure any building opened in Jerusalem with American Embassy written on it will be a magnet for every zealot who can strap on a suicide vest or load a truck with explosives.

For all his idiocy I never took seriously the idea that Trump might be prepared to push the button on North Korea .... if he can be this stupid who knows what he's capable of ...... this isn't funny any more.

He's certainly put the interests of his countries defence contractors first. Make no mistake he has just fired the 1st shots in a ground war in the Middle East.

Problem for him is with his announcement yesterday and his lack of understanding of diplomacy and statesmanship he might just find the likes of Saudi, Kuwait and Oman are less forthcoming with their airspace and territory.

I suppose if you view thousands of civilian deaths as a price worth paying for making America great again then his course of putting his country first is working out well.

That's not the problem though. The problem isn't whether or not there's a case to be made for Jerusalem being the capital of Israel, the problem is when to go about discussing that. Its a bone of contention between the Palestinians and Israel and its status would have been an important part of any settlement brought about by negotiation ... by doing what he's done Trump has basically told the Palestinians the status of the city isn't up for negotiation and that the US recognises Israel's claim to it in its entirety. Well I think there is an argument appeasing the Palestinians and the wider Islamic world in regards to Jeruselam is waste of time. There has been no real peace since 1960's, so why continue down the same route?

If the Palestinians can't accept that Jerusalem is Jewish then why should Israel pander to them? Pandering to the Palestinians over Jerusalem has not worked so far so maybe this is the right move and will bring peace over the long term.

There is no Christian country laying claim to Jerusalem, only the Islamic world are doing this and considering the Jewish faith predates the Islamic faith then yes Jerusalem Is Jewish.

I didn't bring up Scotland in this conversation. I replied meaning if Scotland wanted to change it's capital to another city and asked Trump to recognise this then he probably would.

It's part of the peace accords (1993 but I might be wrong) that they share the capital until a formal solution is found (ideally Israel returning the land it invaded to pre 1967 borders but that's highly unlikely in the current climate). So what Trump has done is shat all over twenty odd years of consensus. Also, the Christians and Armenians also have a quarter each of the city, and they have also been shat on
and undermined by Trumps announcement.

Ironic that the president that's been enthusiastically cheered on by the Evangelical Christian Right has done the most to undermine Christian governance of its most holy city :dunno:

Whoa there! You complain about pathetic point scoring and quote my post instead of the one I was replying to? My post was in the same spirit as yours apparently was, frustration regarding another baseless, irrelevant dig at an individual who has nothing to do with the conversation.

I would ask you what you thought about his accusations but it appears from your opening sentence, a suggestion of a binary choice between either the US or Hamas, that you're in a similar camp. Jeremy Corbyn has indeed used inclusive language in the past to describe parties with differing views in certain situations. It's called diplomacy, and it's probably the best way to solve conflicts.

For clarity, when I said "these matters" I wasn't talking specifically talking about Israel/Palestine, it was our general foreign policy. Forgive me if I seem like I'm scoring points but our interventions in places like the Middle East, Iraq, Libya etc...are part of the reason so many "pissed off Muslims" are burning things and committing terrorist acts. Have a think about how the world would be right now if certain Western countries had been slightly less aggressive and money-orientated and instead adopted socialist ideals that cetrain much-maligned politicians have championed.

Corbyn has been on the right side of history since he's had a voice and you, or the guy I quoted have no right to speak about him in derogatory terms when it comes to any foreign conflicts, especially ones that we've helped create along with the other policemen of the world. Your last sentence is one I think we can all agree on but let's not go here again as its not a good idea.

Returning to your original question, I'd probably rather listen to anyone other than the US right now.

But i think if you look at history, socialist regimes tend to be fairly violent and oppressive.

And foreign policy is always easy when you dont habe to actually make decisions, otherwise its very difficult. Its easy to talk peace, but lets not forget the worst conflixt in human history resulted from appeasement.

Just listened to a bit on the radio regarding Trump justifying his Jerusalem decision and the fact way back in history Jewish people can be identified as the original inhabitants so deserve to have "their" capital.

Im wondering how that fits in with him deregistering vast tracks of native Indian land from being ring-fenced as national monuments and are now opened up for mining etc totally against the wishes of the current native Indian inhabitants?
