Coronavirus

Being out and about today is the first time I have really felt lockdown is over in all but name. Roads are very busy, people standing outside pubs drinking, shops open and people going into them and groups of people all flocking towards a protest that will attract thousands.

It's all a bit of a pretence to say we are being cautious now. That may be the theory but in practice people are making their own decisions. People are being quite open about doing that on this thread and in other conversations I have had as well.

I think the ICU and Hospital numbers are just the confirmed cases. There are “suspected” cases on top of that. No idea why they don’t know if it’s Covid it not. Bizarre.

Because people are typically only infectious with COVID for 7-14 days, people who are hospitalised are usually around day 10 and the effects of COVID that cause hospitalisation can last a lot longer than the length of time someone is infectious.

Hopefully the virus is clever enough to differentiate between people who attend a rally for a noble cause and horse racing events or we're in trouble.

This may sound hysterical but I think the government(s) lost their legitimacy the moment Johnson failed to sack Cummings.

People are going to do what they want now. This puts government in a VERY difficult position if case numbers or deaths start to rise again.

I think we might get away with it up here as there is so little virus out there in the community but it will be very interesting to see what happens over the next 2, 4, 6 weeks down South.

I wandered down to Stockbridge for my weekly takeaway draught beer from the Tap. It's definitely getting busier, although when I walked back up town the city centre was still quiet. However, I suppose people will go where places are open - and the vast majority of shops in Dode Street & Princes Street are still closed (as are the pubs/restaurants - no evidence of anyone drinking outside any establishments in the toon centre that I saw).

Probably suits the UK government, particularly, that they can blame any second wave on people not doing as they were asked. Of course they’ll conveniently ignore the fact that their own people were disregarding the rules as well.

Agreed, although the figures posted aren't accurate. There's an additional 7 people in ICU with suspected Covid and a further almost 400 patients in hospital with suspected covid.

City centre is still dead, I travel through it a couple of days a week. Suburbs and out of towns shopping is definitely opening up though. Carpet Right open, Magnet Kitchens open, M&S open

Exactly that. They purposefully put out mixed messages, briefed the media with an exaggerated version of the easing of lockdown measures and ignored their own 5 tests rules to ease lockdown further to get to the point where they can say "we tried, but people ignored the rules".

They might get lucky ace we might not see a second wave, and we might see number continue to fall, I hope that happens. The alternative is we are in for a really crappy time in the next few weeks.

I think the UK government are bashing on with the idea of herd immunity whilst trying to give the impression they've got some semblance of control over what's happening.

Truth is, they'll be delighted folk are ignoring the rules, imho.

I take it the polis are just turning a blind eye if shops, pubs (to an extent) etc are reopening before the phasing process is supposed to allow. I suppose as long as sensible distancing is being adhered to and there is no public disorder taking place, they might feel it better to let things go.

I think the 'homeware' aspects of the shops I mentioned mean they technically qualify as essential. I don't really have any issue with it tbh. I just don't see why we are pretending that lockdown is anything but increasingly a myth.

I'm sure the Scottish Govt know that rules are being stretched/ broken, and that the lockdown is now easing in between phases by stealth. I think Sturgeon will just be hoping that commonsense prevails to a greater extent, and it might make moving through the phases easier if folk have already been making personal decisions without it causing a new surge in cases. Of course, we probably won't know the consequences (if any) of this increase in activity for a few weeks yet!

YES. However, the shop my wife manages is a shop specialising in soap, the very thing we are told to use, but it's likely to be another few weeks before she is back at work.

According to Sky, they gadgies at AstraZeneca are close to a breakthrough on an antibody treatment which could be a lifesaver to those particularly vulnerable.
