I wonder if it is even more simple than that.
Presumably the year's extension had a deadline date in the contract. And this date would no doubt be a few months before the contract ends so that the player has the opportunity to find a new club whilst still under contract.
So Hibs trigger the extension clause to make sure that the player is tied in for at least another year.
This doesn't mean that a new contract is not still being discussed. So many factors to consider for both club and player.
The extension just creates breathing space and surety for both sides in the meantime.

Leicester City confirm Jamie Vardy is leaving them at the end of the season.
Huns should have died for good. Instead they got a lifeline in the lower leagues, won the Premiership and been in Euro finals and loads of big matches against big clubs in amazing arenas.
Hertz should have been shut down and dealt with a lot more harshly than they were when they bumped Lithuania for tens of millions only to get a decent deal in admin. Came back and been in group stage european football a few times when they should have been suffering down the lower leagues if anywhere. That was after them not having to sell the pink **** tip to cover debts which would have lead to playing at an empty murrayfield and us being the main elite team in Edinburgh. That was after years of spending money they didnt have to gain a sporting advantage over us, who sold all our best players to cover debts, build a training ground and an East and West stand.
Off topic though but it was good to get that off my chest :greengrin
Anyone think Josh Campbell could be away in the summer? Not sure when his deal runs out but with McGrath coming in and Hoillet possibly staying Campbell might fancy a move where he will play more regularly?
The rangers review on twitter tweeting that Rangers are interested in Josh Mulligan.
If that's true then along with the other Dundee player they already signed then they are fishing in the same transfer pool as we are pretty much, certainly nowhere near the level needed to catch up with Celtic. Doesn't quite square with the mega bucks takeover some of them think is coming their way.
Like every player in our team if the price is right it’s possible though I do think Gray is a fan of Campbell and will want to keep his better players . What I seen of McGrath and I see some dons saying it too is he looks more effective out wide at times. I do think Campbell has more grit and a better engine than the other two players as well .
Jamie Vardy to Hibs anyone?
The only part of me that sees reasoning in signing guys like Barron, Cameron, Mulligan is that it maybe allows them to ship out guys like Lawrence, Bajrami etc who are on serious wages. As much as these guys don't elevate Rangers they'll probably offer more than some of the guys on big wages who aren't interested and the wage saving perhaps allows them to go get better elsewhere.
Celtic somehow manage to win things with guys like Jack Hendry, Liam Scales, Greg Taylor, Tony Ralston, Scott Bain, Luke McCowan all in their squad. You just have to get the big pieces right to make it work or else as someone else pointed out you end up with a Dundee team.
I think that's true when you are actually banging them in being the big man. But the problem is when that isn't happening anymore or if your form dips all that goes out the window and it just fosters resentment within the training centre if you're not seen to be pulling your weight.
Doesn’t seem to have harmed his career. Stilll holds the record for goals in consecutive Premier League games.
It really hasn't, I just question everything and the "facts" as the media would have us believe don't add up in my opinion. Maybe I'll be proved wrong, I wouldn't lose any sleep over it if I am though I'll continue to wish ruin on the entire Sevco name and everything associated with it.
I’ll probably get some of this wrong as it was ages ago since I read an article but the jest of it was he didn’t train the same way as he did from around 2016 and use to miss training in order to save himself for games at times , he didn’t do weights and had his own something or other chambers installed in his house plus a oxygen tent which is stuff I don’t know about . I think Ranieri or Rodger’s at one point praised him for his professionalism / dedication..
I do remember that it said in the article he use to drink three cans of red bull ,eat a Ham and cheese omelette plus have an expresso which he said helped him run around like a nut job 😆…
From listening to alot of football podcasts it sounds quite alot of elite players are ‘poor trainers’, especially ones from outwith Britain.
Dont know if it’s a British mentality thing where we think in training you should be 100mph and smashing players, the old ‘treat it like a game’ mentality.
Whereas they say alot of players from overseas just go through the motions and do the bare minimum so that they’re as fit and fresh for the game as possible
I don’t know the facts but I’d have been surprised if a “poor trainer” would be able to get a gig for £140k pw in the Prem at 38 yo.
He may need to have an adapted schedule to get the best out of him at his age but that’s a different thing to being poor.
David Narey and Paul McGrath weren’t poor trainers they just had to adapt their training schedules to allow for not flaring up chronic injuries.
I see burke is on the move again in the summer, it's like his 11th club in 11 years including loans.
Aberdeen are rumoured to have signed Australian winger Nicolas Milanovic
I find the Australian league hard to judge. Good stats in that league but then wasn’t Josh Nisbet one of the better players in the league?
Nisbet hasn’t been a standout for Ross County yet is capped for Australia whilst Milanovic Isn’t yet. Then again neither is out POTY Iredale so not necessarily a good indicator.
I look forward to the implosion next season when Aberdeen are sitting bottom six and Jimmy thelin doesn’t have the incredible start like this season.
A lot of money being spent on players that have no familiarity with Scottish football.
We’ve all seen that movie before
In what sense? This was from one of his 2016 league winning team mates. The point I am making is that SDG and Malky seem to be putting a lot of emphasis on players character/attitude. ALF and Dwight Gayle both received plaudits for their model professionalism and being an influence off the pitch as well as on it. Jamie Vardy doesn’t sound like that type.
I think it would be difficult for most players to stand out for Ross County who are perennial strugglers.
I’ve probably seen Nisbet more times than 98% of people on here and there is no doubt he is a quality player.
Scott Allan was also a quality player but if you ask Rotherham fans they would most likely say he was crap and look at you sideways.
I still harbour hopes that we could sign him one day.
As for Milanovic if he does come to Aberdeen it will be interesting how he deals with much tighter Scottish defences.
The play in the A League is much more open and less frenetic than in Scotland and I frequently shake my head at the space afforded to attackers in the 18 yard in Oz.
2030 minutes for Ross County this season. The player with the most minutes for County has played 3404 minutes
Similar number of minutes as Iredale at Hibs.
All the above is according to transfermrkt

I think the issue with Josh Nisbet is not his ability but his height.
Its been clear since last summer that we have looked - where possible - to sign tall, athletic players.
I think Nisbet has looked decent when I have seen him for County, but he gets a wee bit lost when up against bigger teams like Hibs.
With Plymouth all but relegated I wonder if Ryan Hardie will get a move, 28 years of age and scores goals. I'd imagine he's well out of our range , salary and fee but will be interesting to see if he gets a move or if he will be playing league 1 football next season.
Will Fish also relegated with Cardiff.
I would be going for Bobby wales Kilmarnock, and Josh mulligan Dundee, two young good players, and out of contract this summer.
Hopefully we finish 3rd, and receive a good fee from Vente, with the likely departure of gayle, I feel we need to bolster the attack.
Most good players come at a price, and these two, are young enough, 20 and 22, to be a real asset going forward.
I actually think they may go to a bigger club than us, if that’s possible.😔
If the black knights ard serious about taking Hibs in the first instance to 3rd then we need proper investment.
Cod you lot stop that?
Nae mair puns ya Bass.
Sorry I missed this earlier as I’m hooked on puns .
For Hakes sake, no more puns
Are we sure he is angling for a move?
Wouldn’t it be good to get the investment needed and knock the old firm off their perch
Surely someone has heard a proper rumour when they have been trout and about?
Not been herring anything worth reporting tbf
Don't know about anyone else but I'm stick to death of these puns on here. It's a football forum where people are actually interested in transfer news not stupid puns. Every time I come on I think there's maybe a rumour of some sorts. Pissing me off. Really not the plaice.
Yeah the .nets become a tangled mess... get it sorted admins
Cod sake, not another pun thread
FFS not this again!! This plaice gets worse is nuts at times??
Scott Burns saying Martin Boyle still waiting to hear if Hibs will extend his deal. Apparently Hibs have until next month to activate his extension and he has interest from England and the middle east.
