People that make this point, I've have loads of discussions about crap adverts on tv, just cos I'm talking about them doesn't mean I have any intention of purchasing the product in question.

I'm an avid cyclist but other cyclists really boil my piss. The complete disregard for common road courtesy is astonishing and I'm amazed there's so many of us on the roads and not dead. As has already been mentioned, the complete lack of paying attention to red lights is the worst, I've seen countless cyclists just totally ignore them and I've seen on 3 occasions a pedestrian crossing the road at a green man be hit by one of these utter muppets. Keep meaning to get a helmet cam and upload the footage to YouTube, unbelievable. I've never once had an issue with a car, some close passes but nothing that I've thought was taking the piss.
Your post is a breath of fresh air, Exile. Like you I cycle - here and there, but not a lot. I try and keep to off-road tracks and side roads where possible. I am 100% aware of my vulnerabilty (unlike the sterotypes you mention) so I'm constantly looking and listening for traffic around me.
It surprises me how many - let's call them 'alpha-cyclists' - pedal at speed with their heads down.
Some pull out to overtake parked cars without looking over their shoulder or even signaling. I saw one such creature today weaving in and out a blockade of stop-starting buses.
The police should set up an exercise (like the did with motorists recently) showing these cyclists how to respect other road users. It's long overdue.
I was driving home from work tonight. Back shift so dark. A lot of the side streets in Manchester aren't well lit. A cyclist came through a red light, dressed all in black, no lights on his bike, wearing head phones and playing on his phone.
Utter cretin.

Adults referring to their parents as Mummy & Daddy.
Whilst we're on cycling I really dislike those frail looking trailors people put their kids in and cycle around the city, Why is it when a kid is in a car they are strapped in as if they are going to the moon but cyclists can put them in these flimsy boxes that have no protection what so ever?
It's all relative I suppose, cars can go a lot faster and stop a lot quicker(especially when in an accident) so the users need to be restrained.
If we're that concerned about cyclists safety maybe we should give them more space, just a thought.
The general attitude to general cyclists is pretty poor just now and I'm not sure if it's justified or if motorists are just picking on an easy target. If an individual cyclist breaks the law, then fine, they're a pr!ck and if needs be they should be dealt with the law, but equally I'd expect other road users to be dealt with the same venom but it just doesn't seem to be the case.
We've seen peeves here about pedestrians, especially recently tourists walking out or along the road without looking, but note it's not ALL pedestrians.
We have motorists that speed on a daily basis, use mobiles when driving, drive through red lights, park on pavements or yellow zig-zags outside schools, but not ALL motorists are bad.
But when it comes to cyclists they are generalised by the acts of the few, yet that's deemed acceptable?
I've said it before but I'll repeat myself to make the point; I think we should all get out there and experience different modes of travel, from walking, cycling, driving to even sitting in the cab of an HGV. All modes come with their risks and preconceived perceptions.
Sitting in a queue of traffic watching a cyclist go through a red light is nothing compared to watching a motorised vehicle go through a red (and it happens a lot in the city centre) but it attracts a disproportionate reaction from many motorists, I personally don't get it. Either law breakers should be treated the same or they should be judged in proportion to their misdemeanour.
For the record, I walk to work, drive at work and bus or train it at the weekends. I rarely cycle these days so I'm not a "Lycra brigade" apologist.
I guess its all relative until a kid gets run over? A kid in a car has the safety of the car its self and the child safety seats, way more protection that those things offer, even at faster speeds. I'm not someone who bashes cyclists in general but i have a few gripes. I have even more gripes about the driving standards at the moment which are generally appalling. I commute into Edinburgh every day and barely one goes by where i see people using phones, run red lights, driving aggressively and weaving in and out of traffic if those few seconds saved really matter.
The point wasn't to bash the cyclists as such but more about the safety of the equipment they use to transport their child, when you see one of those things going up the road and a huge lorry passes them i really do wonder why these are allowed giving the measures in health and safety that have been put in elsewhere.
I cant be the only one?

People who don't read e-mails properly.
I've had at least 3 instances where a request for X info has come, X info has been given and then a further request for that info has come in from the same person.
Or even more annoyingly, when you e-mail on a different but linked subject, let's call it subject Y, but also include info X only to be met with a reponse saying "thanks for subject Y, could you confirm info X to me"
How do these people get on in life in a professional environment?!? It genuinely baffles me.
Scotland players who don't sing :grr:
Trolls (the movie). It's been on NowTV for about a week and it's been playing non stop in our house for the same amount of time. Annoying celebrities voices too.
"Soft close" items that close too slowly, such as my toilet. I end up getting impatient and finishing the job myself with more force than necessary.
I agree.
I'm sure all being well and if everybody does everything they're supposed to the kid isn't at risk. Unfortunately we all know that's not how roads work, especially at busy roundabouts. I'm amazed people gamble with their kids life (and I genuinely don't think I'm exaggerating) based on assuming people won't be idiots on the road.
Car companies spend millions investing in technology to keep people safe in the event of a crash yet these parents think a flimsy thing attached to the back of a bike which isn't always obvious depending on the angle they're approaching or the visibility is sufficient, I really don't get it and don't understand why anyone would take the risk, especially in big cities.
Too right. It's OK over in Holland where cycling is properly catered for with cycle lanes running beside motorways etc. But on our roads? No chance.
I find it's mostly hippy middle class types who tow their kids about in these things. They want their heids looked.
I used one for ages for my daughter. Due to her disability she has a serious lack of balance and can't cycle so we put her in a trailer so we could all go out as a family. Never once felt it was unsafe as we tended to stay away from very busy roads. It's really no more or less safe that kids cycling.
Parents with young children crossing the road diagonally or 10yds from a pedestrian crossing.
The "up at 6am to put my towel on a sunlounger" brigade. Currently on going at my hotel. Some of these twits don't even appear till mid afternoon. 😠
This was the case at my most recent holiday in Lanzarote, sun lounger Olympics. It was comedy gold to watch. People nearly coming to blows over a piece of plastic...
About 10 years ago I was in Salou with 3 or 4 others from work on a lads holiday, the sun lounger wars was going on then as well and it was horrendous in the mornings, We got fed up with it so one night we all came back pished as per after a long day on the sauce. One of us thought it would be a great idea to jump the gate to pool area and launch all the towels into the pool as a GIRUY to the roasters who had left towels out for the morning. We must have thrown about 30 towels into the pool, buggered off to bed then next day we were told by hotel staff to make sure our rooms were locked as some local torags had broken into the pool area and horsed all the towels in the pool. We were all in stitches with this news and we took that little secret back to Edinburgh with us. It was brilliant and I still chuckle at it now. :greengrin
Similarly, if you go to a gig and one of a group of people turns up early and saves 4 or 5 of the best seats for their pals who turn up just before the start. Fair enough saving a seat for a friend who can't get there on time but half a row or a full table? Naw.
The Edinburgh Evening News - describing two routine airport delays as "Chaos".
Train stations where the only ticket machine is in the only rain shelter, which is tiny and rammed.
As mentioned before, people who take an eternity to find their card and use it when paying for stuff, when they knew 5 mins previously this was going to happen.
Acceptable sexism. Congratulations to Kate Middleton on her pregnancy. I wonder who the father is.
Not really a pet peeve because this is a new one to me but - French administration/accountants.
Across here, if you're off work sick you generally don't get paid for the first 3 days (there are far fewer Monday morning "stomach bugs" than in the UK). Given that on average there are 21/22 working days in a month this isn't negligible (ie. each day represents about 5% of your monthly salary).
I broke my arm/wrist 3 weeks ago and was automatically signed off work. I was emailed my wage slip yesterday and noted that I'd had the 3 days deducted - fair enough you may say. But no, because I was on holiday at the time. Our accountant has managed to deduct the number of days holiday that I took as well as money for not working during the time when I wasn't meant to be working anyway.
I've just finished a very interesting conversation with them and, after some gentle persuasion, they've agreed to recalculate my salary.
Obviously that was a "having their cake and eating it" situation.
People (on both sides of the work fence) can be self serving greedy dicks.
Glad you got them to see sense, however, it says a lot about the firm you work for that you had to bring this up (unless it was a genuine mistake of course).
The wages aren't done in-house, it's our chartered accountants that do them.
My boss is brand new. On the rare occasion that I've been off in the past he hasn't even told the accountant so I wasn't docked at all. This time it was all part of the Social Security set-up and it was they who informed the accountants directly.
I know I'll be in a minority here as I'm a Luddite when it comes to social media and twitter etc and don't use any of it, but I hate the increasing use of the "@" symbol in everyday use.
Particularly hate seeing it used in emails at work.
People who try to barge on to a train or bus whilst other people are still getting off. Ignorant muppets.
Random surveys appearing on online football forums with little or no knowledge of the poster.
Getting emails from some survey crowd asking what you thought of the last product you bought.
(Especially if it was on ebay and you've already left feedback).
The way skinny jeans have saturated the market. I've got big calves and thighs, they don't work for me.
Work colleagues who who have terrible attendance but shout long and loud whenever they're dealt any sanctions.
My work has some really good benefits, including excellent sick pay, and I have colleagues who are off "sick" several days a month, one who is off for months at a time (just returned from a 15 week absence, in the last 6 years I'd guesstimate they've had something close to 15+ months off), yet make it very clear that they are furious when their sick pay has run out and they're down to SSP, or some of their benefits have been suspended (in line with the absence policy), and tell the world about how hard down by they are.
Naw, you're lazy and expect everyone to pick up your slack whilst you have several fridays/Mondays lying in your pit coz you cannae be arsed!
I'm 6'3" and 15st7. I'm not the skinniest but I'm not a huge fat barsteward either. A few years ago XL shirts and tops fitted fine but now, even though I'm the same size, anything less than XXXL isn't even worth trying. Why have they done this?
I may have come full circle however emojis in work emails drives me ****ing nuts. Just been for a series of interviews for a job and the HR woman that I've communicated with puts them in everything!! I'm also on board with the skinny jeans/shirts chat so bloody annoying is so hard to make a decent pair of nice bootcut jeans. Thought was a phase for clothes shops would get over but it's been about 10 years now!
People that don't read the PR releases from Hibs RE tickets then go onto ask questions on threads that are already answered in the PR release.
The ********s that are currently driving across the new bridge just to drive back over it!!! What? You're never, ever going to drive over the bridge?? No wonder the traffics brutal!!
Stupid journalists who report on the size of something by saying "it's the size of x amount of football pitches"
As if we are too stupid to understand size.
Another bridge peeve:
People referring to The Forth Bridge as the Forth 'rail' Bridge!
So, was meant to be seeing the Libertines next Friday 22nd in Blackpool - but they had to cancel that due to a dodgy roof. Instead they are playing in Warrington on the same night, with a 2000 less capacity, but thankfully managed to get tickets first thing this morning.:aok:
The term 'snowflake'.
It's actually quite amusing as it tends to get thrown about by very, very angry right wing people in the midst of a total hissy fit because someone has dared to disagree with them. They don't seem to spot the irony of using the term in such a context.
Feminists and feminazis.
Folk who think the welfare system owes them something, even though they have contributed absolutely nothing to it and have no intention of ever doing so. Burdens on society.
The boy on the Nationwide "armbands" advert, get off the telly!
Hundreds of people leaving a game early when there's still everything to play for.
They are all for gender equality, fine no problem with that. They completely ignore facts though like just 7% of women in the uk consider themselves a feminist, its dying out.
If a woman slaps/kicks/punches a man its generally considered funny and that he must have deserved it and its generally accepted. If a man slaps/kicks/punches a woman in retaliation the woman is now the victim and plays that card and its considered assault, domestic abuse and they should be jailed etc etc.
Another example. A female stewardess pulling a catering trolly down a train/plane past a group of guys a on a stag doo with customary blow up dolls, stag dressed up etc and she gets her arse slapped or pinched by a member or members of the stag party its unacceptable, yes of course it is. That perpetrator is then arrested for sexual assault and sent to court and placed on the sex offenders register, fined and maybe given a suspended sentence. Life potentially ruined, loses his job perhaps.
Now lets flip that around, a male steward if pulling a catering trolly down a train/plane through a hen party with the blow up dolls, cock straws, hen all dressed up etc. Now the male steward gets his arse slapped or balls grabbed by a member or members of the hen party. Thats considered acceptable and a laugh by the members of the hen party and part and parcel of their banter and antics that go on and its all ok. The man is under real pressure not to report that for fear of ridicule and being called a wimp, jesse or a homosexual and to 'man up" and that he should be happy he's getting the female attention, well no he shouldn't as its the exact same as a man doing that to a woman - its not acceptable. Theres no way a woman would be arrested, sent to court, fined, given a suspended sentence and placed on offenders register.
Things are certainly not equal in that sense I'm afraid.
Check out this social experiment carried out in London. Would you stop a woman from beating a man? Footage: Fox News
:agree:
This. I'm all for equality, but these people don't want equality, they want an imbalance in their favour constantly.
another example (which may no longer be allowed) - when my sister passed her driving test, she got her first insurance through a company which openly stated, advertised and positively revelled in only insuring female drivers. That's not equality. Yet was deemed to be no issue. But if there was an insurance company that would only cover male drivers, there would have been hell to pay.
