The lesser spotted Johnson is going to take today’s press briefing at 5
If Boris is backing Cummings then I for one can't wait for PMQs this week.
It will be very interesting to see what questions are asked by journalists during it, in particular Laura Kuenssberg
Johnson doing the presser means it will be a decisive step. Either he announces the departure of Cummings or he backs him. At this stage I am tempted to think he will back him.
The problem is that this story is already toxic. It is not the misdeed that ruins you in politics, it is the lying about it afterwards. And then further stuff coming out, and Cummings has made so many enemies in his own party that the knives will be out and the leaks will be springing out, if you will excuse the mixed metaphor.
I am reminded of a line in The Thick Of It, where the minister bemoans that the longer he delays his resignation adds time on to when he can be re-instated. Cummings should have been straight, said he did wrong and let BJ spin some nonsense about DC being vital in helping run the country in a national emergency blah blah. Story fades away in a couple of news cycles. Instead, there is this slow trickle of further evidence, witnesses etc. Now we are at the stage where half the Cabinet are tainted by association for defending him.
It has been spectacularly poor political management. By the same token, Cummings has caused so much resentment that he is reaping what he sowed.
I've been trying to post this Labour Party video here, but unsuccessfully

😂 Good Sunday afternoon reading.
I’m with you all the way with this. In 9 weeks we have adjusted and accepted the “new normal”. Many people terrified of walking past people, pulling kids to the edge of paths, won’t send kids back to school until it is “completely safe”, wouldn’t sit in a pub or cafe with your family even at your own “safe table”, wouldn’t go on an airplane, never go abroad again until completely safe. Walking about with masks on even if no one remotely close. Queuing up for 15 mins in the rain to buy some food at a supermarket.
It‘s just mental.
We have lost all sense of perspective with this. It is a mild cold and in many cases no symptoms at all for the vast, vast majority of people. And even if it is a stronger dose then the vast majority of those will make a full recovery.
For children and young people generally the % risk is tiny to be almost unregistered.
I don’t know what the solution is re the elderly and those more vulnerable but it certainly cannot be a life of social distancing at work, leisure, education for the rest of us.
I think we will see people readjusting back to the old normal with gradual easing of the fears that covid has caused.
Anyway. Golf this Friday 👍.
There are a further 2 pages that I haven't read after this post, so apologies if I am repeating something already said, but.
Who has said, apart from yourself and a few keyboard thumpers, that social distancing will continue forever?
It's like you have not watched any briefing, especially the most recent ones where a route out of lockdown has been made clear with a steady step by step easing which will, with hopefully a vaccine in the not too distant future meaning that we will look back and think, what a strange time, glad that's over.
At some point, yes I’d imagine so. With the proviso that ‘accepting’ deaths of the vulnerable is the wrong verb to use. A balance will be struck between freedoms and responsibilities, which is the razor on which all political relationships are balanced! You may have noticed the slow process of loosening the restrictions has already started across some parts of the globe. I’m watching Mainz v Red Bull as I type.
No problem, I could have worded my point better. I think there will be no shortage of Tory MPs who dislike him. Their thinking will be calculating the risk of coming out publicly and then BJ backs him. I don’t get the sense that DC is particularly thick-skinned and he will want his revenge.
