I'm not bigging up the UK. I'm merely adding context to the comparison with other countries. Ireland has higher average salaries, but a higher cost of living. The GDP measure needs a lot of unpacking given Ireland's low tax status for business. You really need to take this seriously. It's not a game. Ireland has done well by exploiting a low business tax regime. This distorts the GDP as profits are repatriated to home countries. The approach only works in the long term if it promotes endogenous growth. There are some signs of this. Is it enough? Time will tell. Individual wealth in Ireland is increasing. This is largely driven by property prices. How stable is this?
