Pet Peeves IV

People who lack any humility or self awareness.

We had a guy leave my work mid last year. Tbf to him the job he was offered sounded good, almost too good to be true really, and had I been presented with the opportunity I would have jumped at it or spent the rest of my life wondering what if. It was in an emerging sector that will be huge in the not too distant future. What ****ed everyone off was the bragging about it and the air of superiority that developed whilst working his notice. Every email to customers included mention of the 'amazing opportunity I have been presented with' or 'I'll be leaving for pastures new in a more senior role'. Snide comments about being 'meant for bigger and better things' etc etc.

Anyway it hasn't worked out, seems he was sold a vision that didn't match reality. International travel to exotic locations on a monthly basis became one 2 day trip to Dubai in January, an office in Edinburgh made to a bespoke design is still working from home from his dining room table, the 'eye watering' salary was largely commission based etc etc. And now he's coming back to work for us again. Fine, he took a chance and it didn't work out but the bull**** and bravado is draining. 'I'm only coming back because it's a totally different, far more senior role', 'I was offered a fantastic job with a client in Singapore but it wasn't for me right now', 'X begged me to stay and offered me serious money to reconsider'.

I get that his pride is hurt but **** me just admit you made a mistake, it happens. I'd have a whole lot more sympathy if it wasn't for the ridiculous arrogance. He's not a young guy either so really should know better.

This 'opportunity'? ... sounds interesting...

They might suddenly have a vacancy

Embarrassing. He's got to get a job elsewhere rather than coming back with his tail between his legs. Sounds like some workplace bullying/banter is required to bring him into the real world. :greengrin

Ive had that happen to me, albeit I handled it with a bit more humility.

Promised the world by the new employer, larger salary (true), large bonus (turns out it was discretionary and never ever paid), travel to offices abroad (nope). Ended up working 90 hours a week for six months before I just walked out on a Friday evening and never went back. Text a manager at my previous employer and had a new role back with them by the Monday.

Moral of the story, the grass is very rarely ever greener and don’t burn your bridges.

I'd like to see clubs ban fans bringing in 'can I have your shirt/boots/shorts/sweatband' banners. Its ****ing embarrassing and I'd encourage players not to give them away to these roasters. Match worn shirts should be auctioned off for charity and not given to some kid or adults who flings it straight on eBay which is I believe what happened quite recently with a Liverpool top, possibly Robertsons.

Folk who throw rubbish out of their car whilst driving, behind one guy today who done just this, couldn’t resist telling him when got alongside at traffic lights that he was a lazy inconsiderate bustard.

Agreed. I don’t know why some appear to see it as any better than dropping litter in the street.

The amount of countryside roads and lay bys (again, doesn’t make it any better) spoiled by beer cans, crisp packets and chippie boxes…

The amount of Mcdonalds bags, cups, wrappers you see just discarded in car parks or on country roads is unbelievable. I think the companies should be held responsible if their gear is just chucked away. Harsh I know but it has to stop.

Since McDonalds opened near Eskbank every single road in the area has numerous discarded pockets of rubbish from there.

It is disgusting, really. Each day the rubbish swirls into the road and into my garden !

Absolutely. There was talk a few years back that they could print a sticker on to the bag with the takeaway order and car reg (for drive-thrus) so they could trace the litter back, but the idea never really got traction.

It's the most senseless crime. Theres lots of people round about me who I see out with bags and litter pickers every weekend. Then in the summer time people come to climb Tinto and the verge they park on if the car park is full is infested with dumped water, juice and alcohol bottles. It pisses me off so much.

When I'm out walking or trail running and see people dropping litter I make a point of picking it up, chasing after them then handing it to them with a 'sorry, I think you dropped this by accident'.

It's funny watching the internal dilemma as they flit between feigning innocence, pretending it was indeed an accident or having to admit they are just a manky, selfish, disrespectful twat. And don't even get me started on the slab of lager, disposal BBQ, park in a passing place and piss by the side of the road brigade.

I've always had the opinion that if you can carry a water bottle, energy gel, apple, packet of crisps etc full then you can most definitely carry it when it's empty. If you choose not to then you are just a dick.

I've done this in a busy high Street where the person has loads of people watching. They have just dropped a fag packet 5m from a bin.

Many years ago I was walking up Howe Street with a friend when a car was stopped at lights, the windows came down and rubbish was thrown out. My friend picked it up, and threw it back in just as the light changed, saying I think you dropped this. 😁

Gobbing in public is minging. I actually have a client who was sacked from a placement as he continued to do it right outside the door step to the store, despite being asked to go to the toilet

Seriously, when TB was rife were people encouraged to cough up phlegm and spit it out ? Maybe that's a false memory.

People on Twitter who post a question and state 'just a yes or no answer'.

There's an inevitability it will be 'Bigbilly1690' #nawthanks who describes himself as 'staunch' and 'British by the grace of God' asking 'is Nicola Sturgeon the devil incarnate?' or his equal and opposite reaction 'Jamesy1314' #indyref2 #saoralba who proudly declares he 'blocks all Tories and yoons' asking 'should we have another referendum tomorrow?'

Both will, by some miracle, get an overwhelming majority of replies supporting their own stance and declare 'well that settles it beyond any doubt'. The worst part is they often seem to have a genuine belief there was something scientific about their 'research'.

Definitely a false memory, spitting was illegal, mostly via council bylaws during TB epidemics, from the late 19th century to the 1920s there was an anti spitting movement. By the 30s when TB was rife, spitting was banned in a lot of the UK and where it wasn't it was frowned upon. There was major PSA campaigns throughout the early part of the last century to get people to stop doing it. After WWII and the introduction of antibiotics the stigma of spitting was lost and it became more common again. There are still councils in the UK who treat spitting the same as urinating in public usually dealt with by fixed penalty notice. Spitting on someone is considered assault in both Scots and English/Welsh law. Spitting on the street in many boroughs in London can get you a £500 fine.

In regards to TB coughing up and spitting into a hanky was the expected way of dealing with the excess phlegm.

People who don’t read a comment on social media and respond as if the OP has said something completely different.

Example: on the Facebook post Hibs put up about where to watch the semi final, the first comment I came to was along the lines of (paraphrasing) “how are you meant to watch it on iPlayer in England when it’s on BBC 1 Scotland which you can’t get on iPlayer in England - BBC Scotland you can get, but that’s different”.

Reply to that from someone was (paraphrasing) “it’s not on BBC Scotland Channel, mate, it’s on BBC 1 Scotland, that’s different”.

Well, yes, that is what he’s just said.

Quick perusal of Amazon throws up a likely candidate.

Does this work for a bath plug hole (OK bit of a daft Q as a plug hole is a plug hole) but anyway the first answer is:

Don’t know as I bought mine for the kitchen sink but not used it yet.

I mean WTF possesses people to go to all the bother of answering a question about a product in order to state they can’t answer the question and actually haven’t even used the the damn thing!
