Science is questioned every day. That is its very purpose, to keep on questioning everything.


Those discussions and arguments take place in journals and periodicals, not in short soundbites on ****ty social media sites.

Any "official lines" on science are those areas which have been peer reviewed and practised to the extent that they are truths.

Bert down the boozer saying the earth is flat cos he saw it on youtube isn't practising science. He's a misinformed arse.

Galileo wasn't tried and convicted by scientists with opposing views. He was tried by misinformed cultists who just happened to have power at that time.

Twitter used to be a laugh buy I never found it to be a place where much discussion/debate was ever happening. Now it's just packed with bots, wind-up merchants and people moaning about "woke" for whatever reason. As someone said above they quite like that randomness which can also be a laugh. I left it yonks ago, signed back on for a while then left again once Space Karen went full Goebbels.

This site has only survived in the way it has because it is heavily moderated. If bluesky or any other twitter clone loses its grip on moderation it will go the same way as it.

Joined Bluesky last week but I can't take to the name. It just always comes out bloo-eskie in my head. It should have been two words, Blue Sky, if it wanted to be pronunciated blue sky.

There is a good Scottish punk history account to follow on bluesky if that's your thing. And, as Ozy says, lots of good journalists there too.

To me the spread of science denial is probably the most concerning byproduct of social media and the potential consequences are dire. The idea that a considerable amount of people think they know better than scientific researchers because they've educated themselves on Youtube is both comical and scary at the same time.

To say science is the new religion is tragically funny because in doing so they are acting on the same instincts in human nature that drive many to religion in that they seek simple answers to things they don't understand and social media provides that in abundance.

I would argue that Conspiracies are the new religion, a faith based belief in something without proof.
