I haven't read the book, but I though the film was great fun. I read an interview with Alastair Gray's son who said he'd seen it 7 times so far. Apparently the director loved the book, and asked to meet Gray to talk about adapting it a while back. He went to meet him in Glasgow, and Gray gave him his blessing to do whatever he wanted with it. The director is Greek, and he said that he didn't feel confident he'd be able to address the Scottish political themes with the right amount of respect, so he moved it to more recognisable or generic locations, and left aside the specifically Scottish political metaphors.

I thought the socialism and feminism themes you mentioned in your previous post (before you saw it, so maybe you'd have a different impression now), did come through - to the extent that I thought that they were a bit too explicitly asserted. I'd give it a 4, and I'm looking forward to reading the book.

Finally got round to watching Saltburn and tbh I can't really see what all the fuss is about.

It was a bit pedestrian for about 90 minutes then they rushed about 8 years into the last 30. It felt a bit black comedy by numbers to me and the twist was obvious from about an hour in.

On the positive the acting was good, particularly the Catton parents although you would expect that given who was cast.

Saw “The End We Start From” last night.

Excellent movie set in a climate change dystopia but without the usual hysterics and pseudo-politics but a very human story brilliantly acted by Jodie Comer and an excellent supporting cast.

Will make a good TV movie when it come round.

Watched killers of flower moon last night (Apple TV) enjoyed it, a good film with great actors but it was far too long for me

24 Hours to Live. (Amazon)

Wasn’t expecting much but was a fairly watchable old school style action movie.

Nyad. Maybe not what you would call a star studded film but gripping. True story about a woman who keeps trying to swim from Cuba to florida. Can't recommend it enough.

Watched this last week, really enjoyed it too, quite remarkable story

All of Us Strangers is really good. Brilliant performances all round.

Saw "The Holdovers" last weekend. It was really good, standard top performance from Paul Giamatti.

Albeit, it's definitely a Xmas film so probably best to wait to watch in 11 months time. Recommended if you like this slightly old fashioned low key stories and the films of Alexander Payne.

Watched American History X tonight - hadn’t seen it in years, it’s a terrific film.

There's Something About Mary was the wife's choice for movie night last Friday. I remembered it being much funnier than it was watching it again. It hasn't aged well at all. Much like me, to be fair.

I watched the Beekeeper over the weekend. Very Jason Statham, very OTT, very actioned packed, very violent and very good at what it is. Interesting and talented cast around Statham. Not one for Oscar night but a bloody good and entertaining film that is worth a watch. Some really unintentionally funny lines in it too. Near the start when he meets his landladies daughter, who just happens to be FBI, she goes, " I think I notice a hint of British Isles in your accent". Statham as far as I could tell up to that point was speaking in his usual East London accent goes, "Yeah I was born there". Anyways well worth 2 hours of your time, out on Prime at the moment.

Just watched The Holdovers. Good film but enhanced by the fact that one of them has a book called Hibernian Nights. Think it might be David Gray's autobiography.

Seriously though it's very well acted, it's not exactly die hard though.

Watched zone of interest. After seeing the reviews I actually feel like I should have liked it more than I actually did. Don't get me wrong. I enjoyed it and it's very auditory but I just enjoyed it.

Watched Good Will Hunting on Friday night, I realised I hadn't ever seen it all the way through so picked that for our movie night. Terrific movie, Matt Damon and Robin Williams are outstanding in it,

Followed that up over the weekend with The Marvels, not quite in the same league but entertaining enough as these films go.

My favourite Robin Williams role was the baddie in Insomnia, a very underrated cop movie with Al Pacino from about 15 years ago. One of Christopher Nolans first films, obviously now hes become the go to director in Hollywood so its a good opportunity to see his early work if you liked the Dark Knight stuff and of course Oppenheimer.

The Outfit, on Netflix. I was drawn to it by Mark Rylance, who I really like.

It's a gangster-psychological thing, all set in the one place in 1950's Chicago. Fabulous stage-style acting from everyone, with lots of plot twists.

And then there's The Third Man, which has just popped up on iPlayer. I adore that film almost as much as I love Graham Greene. Probably my favourite English writer ever.

I change my favourite film weekly but The Third Man, 12 Angry Men and Life is Beautiful, sit on top the most.

The Anton Krass theme tune gives me calm. Masterpiece of a film

I liked the first one a lot, and this sequel tops it in my opinion. 3 hours is a long time for me at the cinema but i barely noticed the time go. Some of the visuals are eye-popping.

Robin Williams...goes without saying how good he was, but Matt Damon's versatility is right up there too, from the Bourne Trilogy to The Talented Mr Ripley.

I really enjoyed it too. Like you say, it's not awards material or memorable, but it's great fun.

Watched a German film yesterday called "Ich bin dein Mensch".

The premise is of a scientist taking part in an experiment with a company that creates Robots programmed to be their 'ideal partner'.

It's both humorous and raises serious moral questions. I quite enjoyed it.

Watched "Luther" at the weekend. Awful

Really enjoyed the series and finally got round to catching the movie but was really disappointed with it

Raiders of the Lost Ark was movie night choice this Friday. A favourite since childhood, it's just about a perfect movie. Absolutely love it.

Agree. After re-watching the first four, my takes are Raiders is class, just the benchmark. Temple is a lot poorer than I remember, the 'demonic' scenes when Indy is under the spell are ridiculously long and overblown, takes up way too much of the film. Opening sequence in China and the first half hour absolute genius though. Crusade almost up there with Raiders, the Nazi stuff is hilarious, let down a bit by the love interest, a bit squirmy, and Connery's chemistry with Ford makes the movie great. Crystal Skull, i actually think it was unfairly panned, definitely not up to the previous movies but i thought it was watchable. (my family members disagree!)

Watched Land of bad last night was alright was a little disappointed as I thought it was going to be a serious war type film but it was the typical action type where baddies can’t shoot and the heroes only need a shot off, worth a watch won’t trouble the Oscar’s

I find it hard to pick significant faults with any of them, although having re-watched them all over Christmas with my youngest I agree with you re the scenes in Temple of Doom.

I recall being cynical about Crystal Skull, worrying that Ford was too old for that sort of comeback but I enjoyed it. I was REALLY cynical about him coming back last year for Dial of Destiny (and, yet again, with the Nazis) but it's hard not to enjoy.

I like all of them, in fact Crusade is one of my favourite films, just love the Connery-Ford interactions and the humour.

Crystal skull is probably the weakest for me, although still enjoyable. It’s let down a bit by a couple of iffy set pieces (like the jungle chase) and the climactic finale, and the cgi isn’t the best.

Indiana Jones for me is one of the great cinema series that can be watched over and over again, immensely enjoyable as a boy growing up and as an adult, and as a parent I,patiently waiting to share them with my daughter

I finally watched Killers of the Flower Moon this week. I’d been put off by the running time of nearly three and a half hours but not a single second is wasted. A true masterpiece. If you haven’t seen it yet then put aside some time and prepare to be blown away.

My wife saw it with a couple of friends. They said they struggled to follow a lot of it because they couldn't understand the accents.

Saw Ghostbusters Frozen Empire over the weekend. Was ok, not terrible not great, watchable. A good nod to the original in one scene but felt like a, welcome, shift towards trying to stand on its own two feet rather than just for the nostalgic fanboys (like me) of the previous film.

Think they would be the better for not having any of the original lineup in it. Didn’t feel there was a point to forcing Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson & Annie Potts in, nor the ginger bureaucrat guy. Dan Akroyd still adds value as the knowledge of what’s going on though.

Probably been mentioned already though watched " Heat " last night . Al Pacino and Robert De Niro , wish they had made more movies together , both were excellent in this , hard to believe it's nearly 30 years old now .

Roadhouse, not a patch on the original

Animal Kingdom, Australian film based on a crime family from Melbourne. Really good film and an exceptional performance from James Frecheville in his debut role.

McGregor's first scene in it gives a clue as to how awful it will become. Trying to remake a cult classic like Roadhouse is a hiding to nothing especially if you're not going to invest in a decent cast. Gyllenhaal was the only good thing about this film and that really only came down to his gym routine. The script was substandard apart from where they stole lines from the original. I have rewatched the original film a good number of times, I will never waste another 2 hours of my life watching this again.

Poor things - extrodinarily intriguing and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Strong cast, Emma stone is brilliant.

I struggled at the start as thought if was going to be like some weird Eastern European art house film from the 60's. Glad I persisted

Yeh, I think they feel an obligation to the diehard fans to keep rolling out the original team. As you say Aykroyd is the only one who still feels sort of relevant.

Thought the film started well but dragged a bit thereafter. The 'ghost girl' seemed an unnecessary plot device, with Phoebe's story a bit laboured.

There being a wee line to sign-off with rings a bell actually, but can only remember that it takes place on the steps outside the court, I think! It must be getting on for ten years since I watched it

:agree: at first i thought it was an odd way to finish the film (all that brilliant emotional dialogue a few minutes before and they finish off with a bit of everyday greeting, WTF? But then of course you realise it's showing you the importance of anonymity in a jury, thats what i thought anyway).

Yep - two guys that end-up being fairly close and tight in ‘jury terms’ (managing to do the right thing and turn the vote on its head) then a quick reminder that they didn’t even know each other’s names. And then they walk their separate ways back to normal lives again.

I’d also completely forgotten that he gets the ball rolling with an all out gamble as well!

Also on Prime, Anatomy of a Fall. A much more recent release but a lot of court room drama.

Don’t waste your time if you’re thinking of watching Drive Away Dolls. I had low expectations going into it but thought the fact Ethan Coen directed it and its quirky tone might make it watchable. It’s dire. A road trip movie, but even still there’s no plot. The maguffin reveal at the end is the wrong side of silly and Matt Damon must need money these days for his cameo/small part.

Past Lives has been on the watch list for a while. I think it's now on Netflix now so must get round to seeing it.

The reviews I've read have been scathing.

Disappointing to hear the guy who played Will Hunting, Tom Ripley and Jason Bourne so memorably was involved.

We watched Mississippi Burning for movie night last Friday, I'd seen it before but not for years and I forgot just how good it is. Gene Hackman's excellent in it, it's a terrific movie.

Gene Hackman's one of those actors whose mere presence in a film more often than not elevates its quality.

Watched it last night. Sidney Lumet's direction is as crucial to its success as the collectively fine acting performances. I read that he shot the first third of the jury room scenes at above eye level, the second third at eye level and the final third below eye level, steadily adding to the claustrophobic atmosphere.

I was a bit disconcerted to see in 'viewers also watched' that there was a 1997 made-for-TV remake. Jack Lemmon plays the Henry Fonda role and there are a couple of black jurors, plus the accused is Hispanic. Not sure a 1997 jury would still be all men tho?! Whatever, I'll not be watching it.

That's a point of debate. In the screenplay it states his ethnicity is left 'deliberately vague' although some of the cast's subsequent comments could be interpreted as meaning he's Puerto Rican.

The actor who played him was from an Italian family. His one and only screen role apparently.

I'm getting all this from Barry Norman's essay about the movie in an old book of my dad's called The Films of the Century by the way, so I'm assuming it's correct.

Was talking about this and ‘a time to kill’ (incidentally was on tv last week) as I seen ‘in the heat of the night’ for the first time over the past couple of weeks.

All good films but I was saying I think ATTK and MB are more alike than ITHOTN. And I think I prefer the former two as well.

I think it’s clear from the dialogue that one of the themes of the film is a subtle critique about racial stereotypes generally. When the ‘you know what i mean?’ hyper aggressive juror keeps returning to what ‘these people’ are like and what ‘these people’ do. It was right in the middle of McCarthyism at the time so filmmakers tended to be careful about politics.

Y’all need to stop talking about 12 angry men… I’m getting tempted to watch it for the second time in as many weeks!!!

Another classic from a great era. ‘Just be a mensch’ :agree:

Watched " The Score " last night , Robert De Niro, Ed Norton and Marlon Brando . Hadn't seen it for awhile .

Saw Civil War at the weekend, was really good. It doesn’t tell you what the civil war is about, or take a side. It’s from the war photographers perspective and showing that war is war, this one just so happens to be in America. Only minor gripe was that they seemed to not know how to end the film and rushed it a little. That and at the end they make one of the characters go too far 180 to show how war hardens and changes people, but small gripes in an otherwise very well done and enjoyable film.

Watched Uncut Gems on Netflix last night, Adam Sandler in a more serious role than his usual comedies and have always put it off as he is in it, tell you what though he was brilliant in it, just shows you with the right role and story he can comfortably pull it off, reminded me of Al Pacino in parts, the story is about a Jewish Diamond Dealer who over the course of the movie makes bad decisions one after another, it was a pretty tense and stressful ride watching it and fair play to the directors for drawn any kind of emotion out of it, solid movie for me and better than some of the guff that is Oscar nomitated

Watched it a couple of years back and agree with a lot of the above.

Your Pacino reference isn’t something I’ve ever thought about but I definitely see what you mean now you say it. I’m thinking older Pacino (Lefty in Donnie Brascoe’ or any given Sunday) as opposed to young Michael in the first Godfather.
