Kilmarnock 1 v 3 Hibernian
Robertson
Doyle 2
This was a re-arranged fixture as the previous fixture was abandoned after a Kilmarnock fan very sadly collapsed and passed away later in Hospital when the scores were tied at 1-1
Hibs rested Leigh Griffiths with the Scottish Cup Final in mind Kilmarnock played a young team and Lewis Stevenson captained the side
Scott Robertson opened the scoring prodding the ball into the net from close range to claim his first goal for the club. Scott Robertson then added what he thought was a second but this was correctly ruled out as he was adjudged to have used a hand
Kilmarnock flew out the traps in the second half with Paul Heffernan going close. Murdoch in the HIBS goal did well to get down to a Lee Ashcroft header but he could do little about his next attempt a looping back post header that secured Kilmarnock’s equaliser and marked his debut with his first goal for the club
The home side were almost in front moments later when substitute Borja Perez’s strike hit the post and Heffernan connected with the rebound but the ball flew over. Eoin Doyle then headed the ball home but for the second time the referee ruled out a HIBS strike this time for offside
With Kilmarnock looking the more likely in the closing stages as they surged forward HIBS hit them with a late double whammy Alex Harris powered the ball across the face of the goal and Doyle stretched to poke the ball home to claim his 10th goal of the season and in the dying moments as Kilmarnock searched in vain for an equaliser Doyle powered home from 12 yards to secure all three points

HIBS were into the semi-final after defeating Tottenham Hotspur after a replay and faced hot favourites Newcastle United who had defeated Aberdeen 4-2 in the previous round
Newcastle started brightly enough and Tommy Younger pulled off two outstanding saves to deny them but HIBS turned on a virtuoso display of fast interchanging attacking football that was a joy to behold and Newcastle could not cope.
Eddie Turnbull opened the scoring for HIBS in the 16th minute and then turned provider to set up Lawrie Reilly who made it two before the break. Newcastle missed a first half penalty which might have put a different complexion on things but it was not to be as the second half continued in the same format as the first with Bobby Johnstone finishing off a neat three man move and Eddie Turnbull completing the scoring before the end to give HIBS a decisive and convincing 4-0 victory

Hibernian 1 v 0 Airdrieonians
Cooper og
Hibs had finished ninth in this season and now faced a winner takes all two legged affair against Alex MacDonald’s First Division runner’s up Airdrieonians to hang onto their Premiership status.
From a HIBS point of view Airdrieonians were the worst possible opponents we could face in a play-off situation
They were an awkward squad full of ex-jambos who were dead set on taking HIBS’ place in the old Premier Division they were a team of real scrappers, in your face, niggly and determined to win their own battles all over the pitch at all costs. I am convinced that if Airdrie could pick one team to play in a two legged affair to play in a play-off situation from the top ten it would have been us as we were on a steep downward trajectory under Jim Duffy and Airdrieonians had given us significant problems in cup tie situations in the past
I don’t think I have ever been so nervous going to a football match at Easter Road it was a tense brutal affair with no quarter given or asked played in a very nasty hostile poisonous atmosphere any actual football on display being at a premium as an intense war of attrition developed between both the sides
Luckily HIBS won this game thanks to an unfortunate own goal by the late Steve Cooper but would a slender one goal lead be enough to take through to the away leg?

This match appeared to be in doubt one hour before kick-off as Leith was hit by a freak torrential downpour The torrent soon passed and HIBS faced bottom club Dundee in their last League game before facing Celtic in the Scottish Cup Final on Sunday 26th May 2013.
HIBS centre-forward Leigh Griffiths would play his last League game for HIBS and would return to parent club Wolverhampton Wanderers after the cup final
A win for the home side would guarantee them seventh place and HIBS dominated the first half Jordon Forster heading over from a Griffiths corner and the Wolves’ hitman almost got his 29th goal of the season when his angled drive drew a good save from Dundee goalkeeper Simonsen. Griffiths followed up and his effort appeared to hit a Dundee arm but the referee waved play-on
After the break the visitors began positively John Baird finding Lewis Toshney in the HIBS box but the on-loan Celt hooked over. A wonderful Hanlon pass over the dark blues defence allowed Griffiths to chest and volley wide before Stevenson sliced high and wide from Harris’s pass
Dundee almost ended their SPL campaign in style. Harkins’s deep cross was taken left footed on the volley by Conroy from 12 yards and the ball flashed back across Ben Williams’s goal missing the post by inches
Griffiths left the field of play in the 73rd minute to a standing ovation to be replaced by Chesterfield bound Eoin Doyle but the goal when it came came from an unlikely source when with 11 minutes to go substitute David Wotherspoon met a Lewis Stevenson cross on the edge of the box and powered home a Zidane like bullet header into the goalkeepers bottom right hand corner to stake his claim for a starting place a week on Sunday

McNulty
Aberdeen remained undefeated against HIBS in this season with this win at Easter Road
Marc McNulty fired HIBS ahead after a delightful ball from Fraser Murray. Murray then curled a shot just wide and McNulty inexplicably nodded the ball back across goal when an effort towards it may well have been a better option
Just before the break Aberdeen carved out an equaliser when Connor McLennan delivered low and Cosgrove got the break of the ball before firing across Marciano and into the right hand corner
Murray was unlucky with a point blank header at the start of the second half and an 18 yard effort from Horgan flew past Lewis’ right hand post. Aberdeen then took the lead when James Wilson got on the end of a wonderful four man move and was left in acres of space to roll the ball past Marciano
Aberdeen had to better Kilmarnock’s result ( who defeated The Rangers 2-1) to qualify for Europe and they blew it when Cosgroves’ poor late penalty was saved by Rocky’s trailing left leg after SDG was harshly judged to have brought down GMS in the box. They would however go on to qualify for Europe through the back door as a result of Celtic defeating Hearts in the Scottish Cup Final

hibernian 1 v 5 Hearts
McPake
What can one say about a match that has been wiped from the memory banks of so many HIBS supporters
My abiding memory is of turning up more in hope than expectation my heart said HIBS but my head said Hearts. HIBS would have to be at their very best and get very lucky and Hearts would have to be poor. My memory of the second half being how I was going to get back to Edinburgh in time to watch Chelsea in the Champions League Final that early evening
Pat Fenlon had been recruited by HIBS to save Colin Calderwood’s shambolic squad from relegation not only did he do that but he also got us to the Scottish Cup Final utilising his squad of hastily assembled ragtag and bobtails and loanees
Hibs found themselves still in the game at half-time only 1-2 down after skipper James McPake had pulled a goal back and Hearts could consider themselves fortunate to still have 11 men on the park after Ian Black had delivered a forearm smash to the back of Leigh Griffiths’ skull with the ball nowhere near
Referee Craig Thomson, a Hearts fan ruined the match as a contest just after the interval, awarding Hearts a penalty and sending off HIBS defender Pa Kujabi for a foul that was clearly outside the box though his second yellow card was deserved After that HIBS collapsed and Hearts easily won the biggest derby in years 5-1
Since then there have been many stories and theories about what went wrong that have come to light:
The wisdom of taking the team across the Irish Sea to Dublin the stories of cliques in the camp players not being bothered alleged assaults on Coaches, spies in the camp tactics and team line ups being revealed Claros coming into the team at the last minute only to last 42 minutes
One thing is for sure the better team on the day won a team Hearts could not afford and would enter into administration on 19th June 2013 with debts of 25m

Hibs won the inaugural Scottish Second Division in a canter their 57 goals in nine home league games 1893/94 being a British record
Hibernian were now back as a force in Scottish football after being almost down and out a couple of years ago There was a catch however because there was no automatic promotion to Division One this was done on a voting system and also the bottom three teams had to apply for reelection Hibernian would have to drum up support from their very few friends in Scottish football to gain their rightful place in the First Division
The Committee came back to them stating they had decided as the result of a vote to promote Clyde to the First Division who had finished fourth in the Second Division but at that time Clyde came from Glasgow
The authorities had once again rejected Hibernian FC just as they had done in 1875 The Edinburgh Irishmen were again the misfits, the underclass, marginalised and banished to the fringes of Scottish football. But Hibernian were not going to lie down and die they were made of sterner stuff and prepared themselves to once again be champions of the Second Division

The 5 - 1 game will stay with me for a long long time as being my worst single day in football. It doesn’t get much ****ter, but the silver lining was that I went out with my pals, hugged a few Jambos and got bladdered.
The worst bit was seeing the Hearts fans gearing up for their big day out to the parade on the train back to Berwick.
I done the same, we stopped off at a garage for a carryout on the way home to peebles. Got smashed, got the pleasure of the hearts bus arriving home hours later. Few handshakes and so on. Only one idiot thankfully. Next day I was out and about and it was tough watching cars going through for the parade.

The Rangers 2 v 0 Hibernian
A strange performance from Hibernian who had just returned from a week’s Traning Camp in Spain in their absence The Rangers had been defeating QOS in the Play-Off quarter-final.
HIBS appeared to not appreciate the importance of the occasion and their attacks and tempo of play lacked any urgency in the early stages.
The Rangers were content to sit back and concede territory and restrict HIBS to a couple of long range attempts from Liam Craig
With Haris Vuckic controlling the midfield they eventually took a grip of the game when his ball out wide to Foster was turned home by Nicky Clark just before half-time
Into the second half and Vuckic had the presence of mind to pass the ball to Kenny Miller in the box who was in a better position who scored easily past Oxley
Hibs could not turn their superiority into goals leading 13-1 on corners and The Rangers players must have taken great delight from the disconsolate looks on the faces of the Hibernian players at the final whistle going into the second leg in a week’s time at Easter Road

Scott Brown would play his last game for HIBS after agreeing a transfer to Celtic for 4.4 m in the new season
Ex-Hibee Derek Riordan gave Celtic the lead in 56 minutes when he broke down the left and scored from a tight angle past Andy McNeill despite the despairing attentions of Chris Hogg
Scott Brown equalised four minutes later with a flying header from a Shiels cross - from a move that he had started himself-that appeared to take a wicked deflection rising high in the air allowing the onrushing Brown time to meet the ball flush with his forehead to direct it high into Mark Brown’s top left postage stamp corner a goal that was greeted by huge cheers from both sets of supporters
The game was petering out to a stalemate when Zemmama blew a chance to win the match for HIBS when he fired over in front of goal from six yards out with two minutes left
The game had a final twist however when in the dying embers of the game substitute Ivan Sproule who was playing the final match of his first spell at HIBS waltzed around Celtic goalkeeper Brown and fired the ball home between the legs of Stephen McManus
It was a real “ what if “ moment for HIBS’ fans defeating Celtic the week before they were due to play Dunfermline Athletic in a Scottish Cup Final a team many felt HIBS should have easily defeated in a replayed semi-final a few weeks back to set up the possibility of a domestic cup double however it was not to be

117000 fans turned up at Hampden for this all Scottish Final to celebrate the Queens Coronation
Hibs attacked from the off and despite attack after attack they could not get the better of Celtic goalkeeper Johnny Bonnar who was in the form of his life pulling off brilliant and inspired saves from Buchanan Johnstone Smith and Reilly even saving a Turnbull special
Tommy Younger was busy at the other end pulling off saves from Evans, Collins and Mochan but could do little about a 35 yarder from Mochan recently signed from Middlesbrough that flew past him at a rate of knots and into the net on 28 minutes
Into the second half and Reilly thought he had equalised at last when a shot deflected off Jock Stein and was headed for the bottom corner but somehow Bonnar got across and diverted the danger for a corner Gordon Smith thought he had scored when his gentle lob beat Bonnar but the ball nestled on top of the net of the unprotected goal Johnstone thought he had scored three times in the second half one that hit the post and another a miraculous save from a header that Bonnar managed to tip over the bar. All this pressure and HIBS had effectively been reduced to ten men after Bobby Combe had been injured in the first half
Two minutes remaining and Celtic broke away on the counter attack after Jock Stein had dispossessed Gordon Smith at the half way line Jimmy Walshs’ initial shot was blocked by Howie but he recovered and fired home the rebound and made it 2- 0 for Celtic
Hibs had entertained the fans with their fast exciting interchanging football in the Final and in both their defeats of the highly fancied Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United
Gordon Smith felt Celtic had been extremely fortunate to win they had their goalkeeper to thank and that we should have scored a dozen
Eddie Turnbull felt it was a disappointing end to a season we had reached a semi-final a final and we had tied a league and had nothing to show for it and he felt that the team was never the same again. Where have we heard that before?

Rangers were reduced to ten men after 17 minutes when Tommy Bogan clashed with the Rangers keeper Dawson and he was carried off with a broken leg. Ten man Rangers played with even more determination but once again as usual the Referee was on their side when HIBS were denied a stonewall penalty when Jimmy Caskie was chopped down as he bore in on goal
There was no scoring in the first half but Rangers led by two to one on corners.
Mitchell Downie had played very well in HIBS goal but so had the rest of the team with Willie Finnigan and Sammy Kean working like trojans Gordon Smith was outstanding as HIBS mixed skill with playing a hard game
As the minutes of the second half ticked away Rangers were leading 5-4 on corners when with 12 minutes left HIBS drew level but there was still no scoring.
Excitement was high and tempers frayed when with only three minutes left Jimmy Caskie won a corner which was greeted by Hibernian and their fans as if it were a “goal”

21/5/2016 Scottish Cup Final
The Rangers 2 v 3 Hibernian
Stokes 2
Gray
A late David Gray header saw Hibernian beat Rangers to end a tortuous 114 year wait to lift the Scottish Cup
Anthony Stokes scored twice for HIBS either side of goals from Kenny Miller and Andy Halliday Then Gray headed in the winner before HIBS and their fans celebrated a timeless triumph
Hibs started off as though the Managers’ instructions were still ringing in their ears The strategy was that the three centre backs would stifle the corridors of space that Rangers look to exploit in attack while heavy pressing would disrupt the rhythm of Mark Warburton’s side
The planning was meticulous but an immediate advantage would not have been anticipated There was a committed intent that enthused HIBS ‘ play It was evident in the way that Stokes clattered into Jason Holt in the first minute but also in the way the striker drove into the Rangers penalty area and expertly placed a shot beyond Wes Foderingham
Rangers players were immediately subdued although some might have been feeling an element of culpability Halliday and James Tavernier had failed to win the ball from John McGinn while Rob Kiernan allowed Stokes the time and space to measure his options
Stokes naturally drifts out left but this natural instinct would have been encouraged by Stubbs since the space between Tavernier and Kiernan is the most vulnerable area of the Rangers defence
The extent of Rangers unease could be measured by the raggedness of their play passes went astray and possession was cheaply discarded.
Rangers’ whole philosophy under Mark Warburton was to keep the ball and retain possession and it was a departure from this philosophy that brought them level Foderingham’s kick up the park was won by Miller allowing Barrie McKay to gather possession and carry the ball across the field where he found Tavernier the full back immediately swept a cross into the box from deep and Miller leapt ahead of HIBS defender Darren MacGregor to plant a header past Conrad Logan
Flaws made this game exhilarating The defending was so inept at times that opportunities were inevitable Stokes sent an effort bouncing off a post then Miller won another header in the HIBS box that cannoned off the crossbar
Stokes was irrepressible at times at least when faced with Tavernier who had little answer to his forward runs Stokes cut inside the fullback early in the second half but his effort was pushed away by Foderingham That was to be a redeeming feature of the game but it was Rangers who took the lead
Halliday was allowed the room to shape to shoot around 25 yards out but his effort was fierce and true and the ball flew past Conrad Logan into the far side of the net The onus was now on the HIBS players to respond and to dig deep within themselves to find the means and to do it quickly it truly was time for heroes
The introduction of Liam Henderson made an impact not least because of his set piece deliveries From one Stokes muscled Tavernier aside to head in at the near post It was from another corner kick again from Henderson that Gray scored his historic momentous winning goal before surging off towards the fans to celebrate

The second half was barely 10 minutes old when Cummings added his second a run and cross by Heffernan ended with the ball landing at the teenager’s feet inside the penalty area who showed the presence of mind to look up under extreme pressure and chip the ball over the advancing goalkeeper and over the line Ziggy Gordon did manage to scramble back and boot the ball away to safety but TV evidence later showed that the ball had crossed the line by at least two feet and the officials were correct to award the goal
Hibs managed to repel intense Hamilton pressure and held out for an unexpected but welcome 0-2 win to take into the second leg at Easter Road

Hibernian 0 v 1 Rangers
The last half hour of this final game of the season brought back memories of the infamous World Cup match between West Germany v Austria where both sides sat back with both teams apparently happy with the score as it stood.
Rangers had taken the lead after Nacho Novo had opened the scoring on 59 minutes via a deflection off HIBS defender Gary Caldwell
All ears were glued to transistor radios as Rangers had to win to have any chance of snatching the title from Celtic who would incredibly lose their final game at Motherwell
Hibs who finished in third position qualifying for the UEFA Cup needed to avoid a heavy defeat to prevent Aberdeen overtaking them on goal difference
A lot of HIBS fans at the time were not happy as they felt we had the forwards to cause Rangers problems and should have just went for it besides we were starting to get fed up of other teams celebrating title wins at Easter Road
Aberdeen beat Hearts 2-0 but we were back in Europe

Airdrieonians 2 v 4 Hibernian ( Agg 2-5 )
Jackson 2 pens

After the battle of Easter Road HIBS arrived at Broadwood for this play-off showdown 1-0 up thanks to an own goal from Steve Cooper
Such was the importance of this game to Hibernian Football Club I looked behind me shortly before kick off and there sat three HIBS legends together Pat Stanton Lawrie Reilly and Joe Baker
This HIBS feel good factor was destroyed within 90 seconds of the kick off however when HIBS found themselves one goal down and Airdrieonians were level on aggregate
Jamie McQuilken inadvertently found Forbes Johnston with a clearance Jim Leighton came for his cross to make a routine save Big John Hughes headed the ball out of his hands ball drops to Paddy Connolly 1-0 Airdrie
Thereafter the game continued in the same brutal vein as the first leg with the emphasis being on the physical side of the game and the basic tactic being thump it hard thump it wide thump it high and if you can take the man as well so much the better a real battle for survival the only subtlety or signs of any football coming from Darren Jackson and Paddy Connolly
Airdrieonians were all over HIBS as the half wore on and one doubted that if HIBS conceded another they would be able to come back
Jim Leighton had his work cut out and was performing miracles until he got knocked out cold after a sickening clash of heads with Steve Cooper
Things looked to have got a lot worse for HIBS when they conceded a penalty in 34 minutes Referee Willie Young awarding the kick when a Johnston shot struck Brian Welsh’s hand in the box Up stepped Steve Cooper to redeem himself for his og at Easter Road such was his enthusiasm and eagerness to score he could only succeed in hitting the ball with all his might over the crossbar and into Row Z
22 seconds into the second half and Referee Young awarded HIBS a penalty after Jimmy Sandison was softly adjudged to have pulled back Pat McGinlay but a penalty it was and Darren Jackson stepped up to show Airdrie how a penalty should be taken
Airdrie suffered a blow in 55 minutes when Gary Mackay was stretchered off to be replaced by Brian McPhee who only took 3 minutes to get booked
Midway through the second half HIBS were awarded a second penalty when Brian Grant and Davies contested a Paul Tosh cross in the box and the Airdrie man was adjudged to have handled no protest up stepped Darren Jackson cool as you like 2-1 HIBS
Four minutes later Airdrie knew they were staying in the First Division. Grant played the ball through to Tosh in space who had run through from the half-way line his first attempt was parried by Rhodes but he wasted no time in burying the rebound into the empty net
Jimmy Sandison already booked and realising he would not be seeing old adversary Pat McGinlay again for another season decided to elbow him in the face and the Airdrie captain was immediately shown the red card
HIBS rubbed salt into the Airdrie wounds when substitute Keith Wright in his last appearance for HIBS rose unchallenged to meet a superb Darren Jackson cross and bullet a typical header into the net to make it 4-1 for HIBS on the night and at last we could relax
With just two minutes left Hughes handled a Connolly cross in the box and Kenny Black stepped up to score Airdrie’s consolation
Like the first leg this was a rough house game of football with eight bookings ( five for Airdrie) one sending off and four penalties awarded
A game where Airdrie’s rough style of football for once backfired and came back to haunt them
From a HIBS point of view they had held onto their top-flight status and had Darren Jackson Jim Leighton Pat McGinlay and Keith Wright to thank for pulling them out of the fire worryingly only one of them would be at Easter Road in the following season

A minutes silence was perfectly observed in the Leith sunshine for the 216 men from the 1st/7th Leith Battalion who lost their lives in Britain’s worst rail disaster at Quintinshill north of Gretna in 1915
Hibs hammered the Rangers goal for the first 20 minutes of this game but could not find a way through the Referee waving aside hopeful claims when Dean Shiels hit a clearance off his own hand in the box and Liam Craig and Dominic Malonga both being denied by Cammy Bell
As the intensity of HIBS’ play dropped Rangers came more into the game Kenny Miller hitting a shot straight at Oxley and heading just past the post with a diving header from a Foster cross
Into the second half and it was all one way traffic HIBS threw caution to the wind as they ended up with four attackers with Farid El Alagui and Franck Dje Djedje joining Malonga and Cummings up front.
Rangers had parked the bus they had decided to hold what they had and there was no way through as their resolute defence withstood all HIBS attacks with Scott Allan and Dominic Malonga twice going close
Into stoppage time and Paul Hanlon hit the post during a frantic spell of HIBS pressure before Jason Cummings -too little too late - curled a sublime finish into Cammy Bell’s top right hand corner in the 94th minute

Aberdeen beat Dundee United for the UEFA place for the second successive season on the last day of the season with this win over HIBS
HIBS got off to the worst possible start when Yves Ma-Kalambay rolled the ball to the edge of his 18 yard box and kicked his hand to foot clearance off the static Lee Miller and could only watch as the ball ricocheted into the empty net
Charlie Mulgrew made it two just before half-time with a sumptuous free-kick after successfully appealing his red card versus Rangers at Ibrox at the weekend
Derek Riordan took advantage of the euphoria in the Dons team after Mulgrew’s goal by stepping inside his man from the inside left position evading two desperate Aberdeen challenges in the box before dispatching a right foot shot into the corner of the net
Ian Murray was dismissed for a second bookable offence after obstructing flying winger Peter Pawlett in the 69th minute and Ma-Kalambay redeemed himself by saving an 86th minute Sone Aluku penalty after Jonatan Johansson had handled in the box
Hibs finished sixth in this season and Manager Mixu Paatelainen resigned at the end of the game
HIBS were knocked out of their first round of both domestic cup competitions losing to Morton at home 3-4 in the League Cup and Hearts 0-2 at Easter Road in the Scottish Cup -Referee Craig Thomson sending off Steven Fletcher for a challenge on Christophe Berra when the score was 0-0 and HIBS looking the more likely

25/5/2014 Scottish Premiership Play-Off Final 2nd Leg
Hibernian 0 v 2 Hamilton Academicals Agg: 2-2 ( Hamilton won 4-3 on pens AET )
Hibs crashed out of the Scottish Premiership after losing this play-off final second leg at home on penalty kicks
Terry Butcher’s spectacular run of bad form as HIBS Manager was ended thanks to Jason Cummings’ wonderful strikes at New Douglas Park in midweek to give HIBS a two goal advantage going into this winner takes all decider
HIBS decided to play one striker upfront, Paul Heffernan and deployed Jason Cummings as an extra midfielder Butcher also gave a start to onloan forward Danny Haynes ahead of the off form teenager Alex Harris but he had to be replaced by Harris after only six minutes after a crunching Jon Routledge challenge so HIBS were back to their midweek line-up
Six minutes later and the ball was swiftly dispatched into the HIBS net following a misplaced pass by Ryan McGivern. Ali Crawford’s interception was flicked on by Routledge to Jason Scotland whose quick turn mugged Michael Nelson before the striker’s left foot drive from just inside the box slipped under Ben Williams’ outstretched hand
Accies could smell the fear in the Stadium and as in the first leg continued to play the better controlled possession football. HIBS -who had not been performing well at home since the closure of the old East Stand back in 2010 - relied on the long hopeful ball up to Heffernan hoping for a chink in the second tier defence. This ploy almost worked as the natives grew more and more nervous Heffernan having a goal ruled out for off-side and Jason Cummings having a close range header cleared off the line shortly after Williams had saved a net bound Louis Longridge drive with an outstretched foot
Into the second half and Butcher pushed Cummings up front to join Heffernan in search of a tension releasing equaliser this reduction in midfield manpower however left HIBS’ creaking defence exposed and Williams had to be quick off his line to block a Scotland shot after his quick turn left two HIBS defenders going the other way as he bore down on goal
The match wore on and Accies continued to play the tidier controlled football Accies Manager Alex Neil brought himself on to control the tempo of the game and HIBS responded by introducing veteran Kevin Thomson for substitute Alex Harris
The clock was ticking down and after 83 minutes Heffernan was replaced by Tudor-Jones a player who later publicly admitted that he signed a contract at HIBS knowing his legs were gone ?
Deep into four minutes added on time and Butchers plan to hang on to what we had back-fired spectacularly when with seconds to go Scotland once again turned Nelson out wide and fired in a low cross that Tony Andreu turned home with his outstretched foot
There was no further scoring in Extra Time and Kevin Thomson and Jason Cummings would miss their penalties cue protests outside the ground and deserved Accies celebrations inside
Terry Butcher is statistically Hibernian’s worst ever Manager his honeymoon bounce lasted three games over Christmas and things started to go pear-shaped when we surrendered a two goal lead at Tannadice. When he took over we were nowhere near relegation lying in seventh position and then we went on a downward spiral we seemed to be incapable of getting a win and no one seemed to notice when Raith Rovers knocked us out of the Scottish Cup 2-3 at home
His man-management, motivational and tactical skills or rather lack of, team selections and accusations of bullying and use of hair brained schemes also being called into question
We were now headed for the second tier where Hearts and The Rangers were waiting for us but perhaps it was a blessing in disguise we had to change the structure of our club after years of mismanagement and get away from short term fixes it was time to regroup we certainly had to find a new Manager and a new squad of players
There is no doubt that relegation was a financial disaster to our club and was an enormous psychological blow to a club and a support who once again had been badly let down

With Leigh Griffiths clearly not 100% Eoin Doyle was probably our best chance of a goal and he blew his lines with a header that was too close to Fraser Forster in the opening minutes ...unlucky!
After that it was the Anthony Stokes show
A younger leaner meaner fitter Stokes did to us what he was to do against The Rangers three years later though thankfully he did not score laying two goals on a plate for Gary Hooper with whipped in crosses and generally being a pest the whole game
Hooper should have had a hat-trick into the second half but took a fresh air swipe at Lustig’s pass in front of goal but Joe Ledley followed up to hit a rising shot high into Williams’ net to give the score perhaps an unfair reflection but I suppose no one could realistically argue

I used to live near his house when I was a kid and his wife was a lovely woman. She found out I was a Hibs supporter and invited me and my pal in to show us all her photo albums of Willie's career.
My Dad found out later and was totally seething with envy ;-)
Fun Fact: Willie Wilson's house at that time was about 50 metres away from where 'Geebsie' lived (Gogs* was in the year below me at school and I was in his sister's class).
Gogs was his correct nickname, not Geebsie ;-)

HIBS responded through Vincent Hamilton and Martin and crucially Martin saw Sandy McLaughlin save his late penalty kick but it mattered not a jot as HIBS would go on to defeat Kilmarnock 3-0 at Easter Road three days later and qualify to meet Aberdeen in what would prove to be an epic final

27/5/1961 Inter Cities Fairs Cup Semi-Final Play-Off
Roma 6 v 0 Hibernian
Hibs had reached the semi-final of the Inter Cities Fairs Cup which would nowadays be the equivalent of the UEFA Cup or the Europa League
Hibs had already played Roma home and away in the semi-final drawing 2-2 at Easter Road and drawing 3-3 in Rome
Based on present day rules HIBS would be in the Final on the away goals rule but back then the venue for the deciding tie in the event of a draw would be decided by the toss of a coin
In his book Davie Gibson states that the Hibernian Directors actually agreed a financial guarantee to return at the end of May which was fine by him as he had thrown a coin in the Trevi Fountain with Johnny MacLeod and Ronnie Simpson hoping to return one day but not on the end of a 6-0 thrashing
Roma won the toss allegedly but the mysterious thing was the tie was to take place a full month after the 3-3 draw in Rome and a month after HIBS’ domestic season had ended
The Italians were still in the middle of their season and the under prepared HIBS team having not played for a month suffered their heaviest ever away defeat in Europe.
Manfreddi scored in the first minute and would add another three both sides would each miss a penalty before Menichelli and Selmosson would complete the scoring for the Italians
The HIBS players treated the whole trip as a holiday as they did not expect to win and according to Eric Stevenson’s book they would go on organised excursions to the Coliseum, The Trevi Fountain and other local landmarks all laid on by the Daily Express.
An Italian family back in Edinburgh had arranged a slap feed with free flowing wine at a top class local restaurant
Many of the players suffered sunburn lying on the beaches under the intense hot summer sun
The big attraction for the Italian fans was of course Joe Baker but little did they or the HIBS fans realise that he had already been sold

The final instalment of the bore-fest that HIBS so easily could have won
” The first replay was played in dreadful wet conditions and our defence was superb in a match that went to extra time There were no penalty shoot-outs in those days so a second replay took place the following Monday, 28th May
Once again I thought we had our hands on the Cup as we tore Rangers apart in the first half. Tony Higgins put us ahead after 16 minutes but we just could not finish off the Glasgow team Big Derek Johnstone’s equaliser before half-time came off a rebound when Tommy McLean’s 25 yarder took a slight deflection on its way to Jim McArthur who could not hold it.
Johnstone had moved up front and he scored his second after an hour but still we did not give up. The penalty award which allowed us to equalise was soft; McCloy’s offence in the first game was much worse. Ally MacLeod made no mistake and we almost snatched it late on when Bobby Hutchinson who I had sent on to replace Tony Higgins grazed the outside of the post with a shot
Jim McArthur saved a penalty from Alex Miller but in the second half of extra time Davie Cooper swung in a cross and Arthur Duncan dived to try and head clear only for the ball to end up in our net. We had lost the Scottish Cup by an own goal and after 330 minutes of unceasing effort we had nothing to show but losers medals I don’t think Arthur ever forgave himself but he was such a great player for HIBS over the years that no one ever held it against him.”

I remember a geezer who had obviously came straight from work, he was wearing a boiler suit, ran on the park and put an arm around Arthur and had a word of consolation for him. Pretty big cheer from the crowd as he ran back to the terrace as I think we all felt the same and none of us would blame AD for what happened in the final.
Me and my mates got dropped off at the Chesser Inn after the 3-0 doing from the Sheep at Hampden in the League Cup Final 1985 or 1986
Willie Allan told us to take our scarves off Big Dod Stewart appeared from the back still with his blazer and tie on he said “ naw these boys are fine Willie” He started to talk about the 79 Final he said that Arthur turned to him and said “ Sorry George!” He replied “ Dinnae worry about it Arthur “ but he felt like knocking his block off
As Eddie Turnbull said he didn’t think Arthur ever got over it and no one ever held it against him as he was a wonderful servant to the club and a great player

Also enjoy reading this section so many thanks . Great to remember games I actually went to . I`m too young to remember the Summer Cup ( will have been explained already I suppose but why was this tournament invented ? ) but was at ER when we beat Rangers on 31/5/79 and remember us playing in California in May / June 81 ( some players refused to travel cause of contract problems I seem to remember ) . ,Pre season I was at Gibraltar friendly in first days of July 2013 and we`d played at Dumbarton just before that in late June . Apart from this year , close seasons have become very short in recent years . Going back a long time ( about 1972 ) I always remember reading in Evening News that we were playing Middlesbrough in a home friendly on 30th June . Luckily someone in my family phoned ER and we found out game was 30th July ( maybe year Turnbull arrived as manager ) as I lived in the Borders at the time .
I suppose like now where we find ourselves in the middle of a pandemic crisis football clubs are expensive to run and back in 1940 many players and fans were unavailable due to the war and any players that were available were either guest players due to their posting ( Sir Matt Busby) or older players or players in special occupations that were paid on a part time basis
The Summer Cup was the brain child of our Harry Swan to help generate interest among the football starved population and income during the war years and was played May to July
There was also the Southern League Cup a diluted version of the League Cup which HIBS won once
( 1944 versus Rangers 6-5 on corners).
The Summer Cup was never won by more than one team more than once and was presented to Harry Swan by Willie McCartney to be retained in the HIBS boardroom after our inaugural win in 1941
The winners were :
1941 Hibernian
1942 Rangers - defeating Hibernian on the toss of a coin
1943 St Mirren
1944 Motherwell
1945 Partick Thistle defeating Hibernian 2-0
The tournament was reintroduced in 1963/64 for two years
Rangers and Celtic declined to enter
HIBS won in 1964 and Motherwell won in 1965
Hibs have the overall best record in the competition having won it twice and being runners up twice and as I said is on display at Easter Road to this very day
The match versus Middlesbrough 31/7/1971 0-2 was Eddie Turnbulls first game in charge and I remember our new young signing Bertie Auld was having a ding dong battle with Nobby Stiles in the Middlesbrough midfield
Nobby put in an over the ball challenge on Bertie and he fell awkwardly on the brick hard surface damaging his collar bone. Tam McNiven came on and told Bertie he would have to come off “ Give me five minutes “ says Bertie. Two minutes later Nobby Stiles is getting carried off on a stretcher

HIBS were invited to play in this unofficial World Club Championship of the World in a tournament that consisted mostly of Brazilian teams
HIBS were drawn in a section that consisted of Vasco Da Gama, Botofago and Fluminese
The first match against Brazilian Champions Vasco Da Gama was to be played in the world famous Maracana Stadium in front of a crowd of 33671
A jet lagged HIBS team performed admirably in the searing heat scoring through Lawrie Reilly 2 and Eddie Turnbull
The Vasco Da Gama third goal was a mile offside but the Referee waved aside the HIBS protests
Turnbull and Bobby Johnstone would both go on to hit the crossbar but the game would finish all square
The match is best remembered for the Brazilian fans fighting amongst themselves on the terraces
HIBS and their entertaining style of play were very well received by the Brazilian fans and in particular Gordon Smith as Vasco Da Gama showed interest in signing him after the tournament
The other non Brazilian sides placed in the tournament were Sporting Lisbon and Olympia of Paraguay

Davis (pen)
Hibs faced English cracks Wolverhampton Wanderers in a home match in Toronto
Early in the second half Joe Davis equalised an earlier Derek Dougan goal from the penalty spot.
The big talking point however came midway through the second half when the Wolves winger David Wagstaffe punched Jim Scott in the face in an off the ball altercation.
At first the Referee appeared to send Wagstaffe off only for Derek Dougan to step in insisting that if Wagstaffe went then the rest of the Wolves team would join him in the Dressing Room
This seemed to confuse the Referee who eventually changed his mind and merely booked the Wolves player a quite incredible decision
To make matters worse Dougan himself would score the winner a few minutes from the end after intercepting a poor cross field pass by John Madsen
Wolves would go on to lift the trophy defeating Aberdeen in the Final after extra-time

15/6/1946 Victory Cup Final
Rangers 3 v 1 Hibernian
Aitkenhead
Professional football had been suspended for the duration of the Second World War
The cessation of the war came too late for a proper football season in 1945-46. It was ordered by the SFA that instead of a Scottish Cup which had been withheld for the duration of the conflict a Victory Cup would be competed for in April, May and June of 1946
HIBS had defeated Dundee, Hearts, Partick Thistle and Clyde to reach the Final where they would face Rangers at Hampden Park
The match was unique in that brothers Jock and Davie Shaw would line up against each other on opposing sides
The match kicked off and Rangers were running HIBS ragged with their short crisp neat passing moves Aitkenhead and Peat were having to drop back to help out their beleaguered defence in which Shaw and Govan were performing admirably
They could only hang on for so long however and after 20 minutes Rangers took the lead when following a quick throw in out wide taken by ex Hibee guest Jimmy Caskie to Duncanson who reverse passed the ball back to the winger who whipped in a cross to Gillick whose attempt on goal was diverted past his own goalkeeper by the inrushing Finnigan
Despite going behind Hibernian actually began to grow into this match Gordon Smith in particular was causing Jock Shaw some difficulty
Just before half-time Nutley and Milne cleverly worked the ball up the left hand side exchanging passes A dummy by Nutley allowed his partner to deliver a ball into the Rangers box A lung bursting run by Aitkenhead saw him reach the ball first and thunder it first time beyond Bobby Brown high into the roof of the Rangers net
Rangers kicked off the second half and immediately scored what was reported at the time as being one of the best goals ever scored at Hampden Park
Thornton kicked off and played the ball to Torry Gillick He returned it to Thornton and he in turn passed the ball back to Symon The half back lobbed the ball into the centre to be met by Thornton who had made the run The number 9 laid it off neatly for the arriving Duncanson to lash it into the net from fully 20 yards The first time a HIBS player touched the ball in the second half was to pick the ball out of the net
The goal did little to dampen HIBS spirits however and Gordon Smith continued to torment Shaw down the HIBS right flank forcing Brown into two outstanding saves as HIBS chased an equaliser
Willie Waddell had the ball in the net for Rangers but it was ruled out for an infringement in the build up
The game was sealed in the dying moments however when Waddell found Duncanson with a launched ball downfield who beat all opposition to it being first to the ball and guiding it beyond the advancing Jimmy Kerr
In truth it was a poor performance by HIBS on the day who struggled to assert their authority apart from 20 minutes towards the end of the first half. They struggled against explayer Jimmy Caskie who helped Rangers dominate the game and failed to cope with the absence of the experienced Sammy Kean. Manager Willie McCartney going for a positional change rather than a like for like swap

This match was played in a surreal atmosphere with armed police surrounding the pitch as the local stadium and fans had a reputation for trouble
The Italians did not take kindly to being outplayed and they resorted to underhand tactics kicking punching and head-butting
The Referee warned HIBS about their rough play at half time??
Into the second half and a free for all ensued when Peter Cormack was clearly punched in the face off the ball and Jim Scott was sent off for the first time in his career for bad mouthing the Referee near the end of the game
As the final whistle neared the fans had left their seats and were surrounding the pitch outnumbering the armed police waiting to exact their revenge on the HIBS players
At the final whistle Big John McNamee simply walked off the pitch with his chest puffed out closely followed by his team-mates following in behind and safely into the locker room as the Montreal fans hurled abuse at them

Hibernian fell to a shock defeat in front of a full house
According to Eddie Turnbull it was the worst case of biased refereeing he had ever witnessed in his whole career; blocking our players, awarding three penalties to the Swedes and even providing the pass for their third goal and waving play on
Things began to go wrong when the crowd refused to return “our” heavy filly and we had to play with their light weight effort which was a big deal in those days
The name Norrkoping would not be forgotten and Turnbull would have his revenge
Norrkoping played a young centre forward Gunnar Nordahl who would become a Swedish legend making his name in Italy

A goal in the first minute by Peter Cormack gave HIBS the lead against crack Italian Serie A side Cagliari
Throughout the remainder of the first half the Italians were guilty of leaving the boot in and grabbing a handful of flesh as well as your jersey at set pieces They would kick and trip you off the ball when they thought the Ref wasn’t looking
Things kicked off half way through the first half when an Italian full back was sent off for punching and head butting Jim Scott who once again found himself to be the unfortunate victim
The Italian was followed into the Changing Room just before half time by Peter Cormack who was sent off for retaliating to the heavy handed treatment that was being handed out his way
Cagliari equalised just after the re-start but things escalated with only seven minutes remaining. Pat Quinn took a quick free-kick to Colin Grant who wasted no time in burying the ball beyond the Italian goalkeeper for the winner
The Referee was immediately surrounded by the Italian players who insisted that he hadn’t blown for the free-kick to be taken Courageously the Referee refused to change his decision and awarded the goal
The Cagliari Manager instructed his players to leave the field of play Many of the fans in the 15000 crowd who were of Italian origin left their seats and they too entered the fray trying to get at the Referee
After a long delay the Italian team still refused to come back onto the pitch and HIBS were awarded the points
The headlines in the following days press would read “ Soccer Riot in Toronto “
