I hope Joshua turns on the style tonight, but he's yet to convince me he's the real deal.
What a punch! Game over.
How many knock downs? I've got a bet on 1 👍
It's time for Joshua to step up to the next level. A potential great, I just want to see him in with a real fighter. He looks to have everything.
Joshua v Klitschko could be a cracker and a huge step up for Joshua
YES!! 2017 is going to be a phenomenal year in boxing.
I have veered this thread massively off topic - I withdraw all previously stated views about Serena Williams.....apart from the bit about her thighs.
I'm not buying the hype around AJ v Klitshko. WK is what, 41? Won't have fought for 18 months and was poor that night when losing to a very poor world champion. Does he deserve one last chance..... he was a great champion, if a bit dull at times, so yes he does but it's not the defining fight for AJ folk are making out. They seem a bit too pally for it to be a great fight also. Haye v Bellew has me more excited if I'm honest.
Whilst I'm at it, Whyte v Chisora fight of the year? You're having a laugh. Yes it was brutal, exciting and some huge punches landed but not much fitness & very little skill in show. 2 average domestic level fighters who are both an embarrassment to the sport IMHO. It wasn't exact the sweet science Lennox used to talk about.
Whyte v Chisora was my favourite fight this year. Very entertaining. Just because they're far from the most talented doesn't mean it can't be the best/most entertaining.
Agree about the AJ v WK fight though. I'm not expecting a great fight there. It'll be a good test for Joshua though, up against a very smart boxer for a change.
Joshua v Klitschko should be a great fight I reckon. Even with Klitschko at 41, it's a huge step up from anyone Joshua has faced so far. I reckon Joshua should have enough to beat him, Klitschko's last couple of fights showed a real decline imo and by the time this happens it will have been a year and half since he boxed. A really intriguing fight. Personally, I love the respect shown between the two fighters.
As for Whyte v Chisora, it far exceeded my expectations. It was never going to be a boxing masterclass but it was definitely one of the best heavyweight tear-ups of the last year. I'm not quite sure what you were expecting to be honest? When it first got made I thought the build up would be great, but the fight would be a 12 round hug-fest. I got the first part of that prediction correct and I'm glad to see that the fight did not disappoint.
Don't get me wrong, the fight far exceeded my expectations and was the highlight of the bill, no doubt. Just think they are both very limited fighters and showed next to no skill or fitness for a fight second on the bill at the HW world title show and to be talked about as fight of the year. It was a street brawl.
I also agree the AJ fight is a great step up for him. I hope and think he will, win fairly easily though. It will give him credibility as a real champ. I look forward to him fighting Haye more.
Yeah fair dos. I'm not a huge fan of either fighter myself, but as the saying goes - styles make fights and what they gave last night was as good as we were ever going to see from these two. Evidently, they are both evenly matched.
I think the timing is spot on for Joshua to take this fight. Having Klitchsko on his CV will elevate him to the top of the sport then he can look at the likes of Haye, Wilder etc.
Klitchko talking to the croud was a bit cringey i thought, just kept thinking give the mic back to eddie hearn
A fully fit and motivated david haye is really the only dangerous opponent I can see for joshua, think he's too big, fast, young and hungry for wlad not been overly impressed by ortiz there was a lot of hype around him and it seems to be just that, parker is an interesting one don't think anyone knows how good he is,other than that don't think pulev troubles him maybe Wilder.certainly not price, whyte, chisora or any more poor fighters from across the pond he's fought enough of them
Haye might be finished as a heavyweight but we won't know until he fights a real quality fighter (he steamrolls bellew)
Fury is out of the question at the minute and not really a fight I'd like too see fury style doesn't always make for good viewing.
Kind of lost track of what my actual point is but it's along the lines of joshua running out of good opponents definitely think that's why Eddie hearn has signed ortiz and sky have been keeping upto date with parker aswell.
Klitschko is a good fight as it is a huge name at the end of his powers. It gives the fans a big enough fight and it also provides AJ with another step up while not being to the extreme top level yet.
Klitschko is past it for me, 41 years old and by the time April comes around he wouldn't have fought in about 14/15 months? I just don't think he can let his hands go anymore, he managed about 10 punches against Fury although Joshua and Fury are completely different fighters.
I see Chris Eubank Jr has moved up to super middleweight for his next fight in early 2017. It's against Renold Quinlan (nope, haven't heard of him either) and it will be on ITV pay per view. Baffling to say the least when he's achieved **** all so far at middleweight. I think his career is being very poorly managed.
Had never heard of the guy either had a wee look doesn't seem to have fought outside Australia only had 12 fights and lost one for the Australian title, beat Daniel geale last time for the IBO title.which is clearly why Eubank is fighting him he's looking for the easiest way too a world title.
I agree he's been poorly managed so far plenty big names and fights out there for him but seems to take the easiest option
I think he thought saunders was any easy option and came unstuck.
Itv box office is new one to me aswell seems that everyone wants to be on ppv now.better be a good undercard cos they will struggle to sell this they would be better having this one on free to air 1st and see how viewing figures and appetite goes for the future be good too see boxing back on ITV.they do seem to be bring different sports back too itv seeing as they are bringing back world of sport over Xmas.
Strange move if he has any aspirations of being a world champion, Degale, Jack, Smith and Groves etc would all spark him out, he'd have been better off staying a middleweight as GGG can't have too many fights left then trying to pick up one of those belts might be a better option
The advice he gets off his old man will ruin him, he's a grown man now and it's no excuse anymore
Josh taylor confirmed on the undercard of Frampton-Santa Cruz in Vegas on January 28th. What an experience the laddie has gained already. Edinburgh, Belfast, Manchester, Vegas, El Paso, Cardiff and New York, all before he has even had 10 fights!
Anyone watching the fights of the year programme on sky? This year has seen some really cracking matchups. Tony Bellew comes across as a decent knowledgeable guy.
Yeah watched that recently. There has been some decent fights in 2016, watching those highlights of the Whyte v Chisora fight really brought home how much of a good fight it was. Likewise, it really showed how much of a mismatch Brook v GGG was. And Anthony Joshua hasn't even been out of first gear all year long with the poor standard of opponent he's faced, big year coming up for him.
Should be a big year coming up. With itv now back in the frame
They've announced there 1st show 27th of January I think be good for boxers to have different options available to them.
Brook vs khan looks to be goer this time.
Rumours of burns getting a unification bout with Juluis indongo the current ibf and IBO champion.
Can't say I've seen him,anyone?
Plenty other big fights already made
I'm guessing quigg and crolla will get title shots this year all 4 smith brothers probably will, dillian whyte might, groves also looks likely too get the WBA title shot.
If Frampton beats santa cruz again I'd quite like him vs Selby later in the year.
What's everyone else looking forward to, or any fights you'd like too see in 2017?
Brook v khan looking likely, would love to see that and I think Brook wins. GGG v Canelo pencilled for September as well, that should be a cracker.
Parker v Hughie Fury seems to be on the table for April. Talks well underway apparently.
I haven't seen much of Hughie Fury, but from what I have seen it's clear that he's from the same stable as Tyson. He needs a fight like this to prove himself. I can't remember anyone making much fuss about Tyson until he beat Wlad, so this could be exactly what Hughie needs.
Freddie Roach quoted in the Record (I know, I know) as saying Manny Pacquiao could come to the UK this year and Ricky Burns is a possible opponent.
Can't see it and it would be lucky to go 3 rounds but big payday and a great opportunity for Burns.
Hughie Fury is a phenomenal talent and will beat Parker.
His footwork , boxing brain and shot selection and variety for a heavyweight are second to none (including his cousin) and certainly miles better than Joseph Parker. He is not a massive puncher for a heavyweight and Parker can dig but I can see Fury fighting on the outside and dominating the fight. Parker's stamina has also looked suspect in a couple of fights.
He is the polar opposite of Tyson in terms of personality which may hinder his marketability but as a pure boxer he has huge potential.
Degale V Jack tonight, should be a decent fight, if they both perform to their maximum I think Deagle will win, sets up a couple of big fights with Smith and Groves which would be great, also looking forward to seeing Pedrosa again on the undercard
First 2 fights have been excellent, will let the people who have not done an all nighter watch it before I spoil them and talk about it
Degale up next
Great fight, gutted with the decision as had Degale on points but can't argue with the draw. Mayweather is a complete prick. Needs to be centre of attention. Can't believe Sky cut off the programme mid interview and with very little post fight reaction. Expect better from them.
Was a great fight. Agree about mayweather , everything is about him. Sky really should have stuck with the interview not like they have anything else on at this time that can't start late. Would love to see a rematch but can't see it happening.
Was worried for DeGale in the 12th, but thought he was comfortable in every other round. I was disappointed in Jack complaining after the fight that chunky kept running away from him - being quick, slick and savvy does not equal running away. I agree with others; Mayweather was annoying as a fighter, but he is nauseating as a "promoter".
Not usually a fan of De Ga!e but that was a great fight. Could be a vintage year for boxing.
Had to laugh at Jack moaning about Degale "running away " sure his promoter did that for a lot of his fights.
excuse my ignorance but how did it end up a draw, 2 judges had it all square and one had a win for degale, surely degale won? i dont really know how it works
Frank Warren has today announced details of his upcoming shows now also live on bt sport.between sky,bt and itv now back in the fray going to be plenty of live boxing over the next year good to see for fans and fighters.
Really looking forward to this weekend, Taylor, Selby, Garcia, zlaticanin, Santa Cruz and Frampton is a great card
That card looks superb. Both Selby and Frampton are incredible fighters.
Another win for Taylor, harder fight for him but the guy he was fighting had some chin
What a fight between Framtpon and Santa Cruz. Very close again and they have to do the trilogy now.
Thought that was the right outcome, could happily watch them fight every week and not get bored, a rematch in Belfast will be great if it happens
Just watched the re run of last nights fight & a very intelligent shift from Santa Cruz utilising his longer jab very well.
Crampton held his own but a fair result imo
Mikey Garcia has been around for a while. His debute was ten years ago at Featherweight. Last night was his second fight back after a two and a half year lay off due to promotional problems. He has good wins over Orlando Salido (the guy who beat Lomachenko) Juan Manuel Lopez and Rocky Martinez. I'd love to see him fight Lomachenko, and a future fight with Crawford could be made if he goes up to light welterweight in the future. Crawford will likely have moved up to welter by then though. I remember watching his brother and trainer Robert Garcia in the 90's. Cracking fighter to watch was Robert. He was the IBF super featherweight champ for a while in the late 90's. He lost his title eventually to Diego Corrales.
Yeah heard about him for a while now knew about his promotional problems.watched his fight last night and I was nightly impressed punch perfect and the ko was a heavy one.
I'd like to see luke Campbell fight him would a massive step up for Campbell but I think it would make a great fight.
Yeah, Garcia was very impressive as expected. Zlaticanin was in a bad way.
Luke Campbell has come back well after his loss to Mendy. A fight with Zlaticanin would be a better test for him at this stage in my opinion. Right now Garcia is far too dangerous a fight for Campbell. Garcia's looking for a unification fight next up anyway. There's talk of a fight with WBA champ Jorge Linares already. The other title holders are Robert Easter Jr (IBF) and Terry Flanagan (WBO).
Of course it would be a very dangerous fight for Campbell.
Just one I'd like to watch.
Can't say I've seen easter so don't know how good he is,
Think he'd comfortably beat Flanagan think Linares will win his rematch again but I'd fancy garcia against both of them.
Gutted for Selby that his fight was called off at such short notice. Unclear what the issue was something to do with blood work. One rumour going about is that he had hepatitis! If that's true crazy how that wasn't picked up on until the weigh ins.
Eubank fight PPV on ITV but on Virgin you can't get it if you just have bog standard Vbox. Gutted as I am at my Dad's so no chance of seeing it then!
I dont know anyone who has booked this. I think the fact his dad is a tit and acting up at every opertunity is going to have a negative effect on his career. No doubt he has talent but calling out ggg then not taking the fight shows what he feels he can actualy do
Sportsmania have a 4k picture and an HD one tonight for this fight, its quality on my tv tonight. :top marks
This lad Chris Kongo looks like a big hitter, not sure how good that opponent was, but Kongo was clearly a few steps above.
We're all hoping Eubank Jnr loses tonight right?
FFS surely it's time now for Price to retire?
I like David Price as a bloke but to gas out after 3 rounds when you are a professional is shocking
Why do they keep saying people are former undefeated like that means anything, I'm currently underfeated at super middleweight too:faf::faf:
Fantastic round there!
Totally deserved. Great boxing performance. Still don't like his patter much.
Shouldn't have been stopped imo, Eubank really needs to fight someone whos better than domestic level to see if he is any good, he's done it once and got schooled by Saunders, he's had the chance to fight GGG and shat it, it's one thing to throw all these punches against someone who doesn't punch back
Eubank Jr clearly has natural talent but he still has a lot of technical flaws. His defence isn't great and he's really open when he throws those wild hooks and uppercuts. He doesn't have a lot of power but to counter that he's strong and seems pretty durable. He's good but no where near as good as his dad Sr makes him out to be. An elite fighter will hit him lots and be able block and move out of the way of his shots very easily imo.
It's typical of the UK casual boxing fan to buy the hype and get over excited over one of their own beating on B class opposition. I can't see Eubank Jr amounting to much once he steps up in class. His vulnerabilities are obvious even at this level so he'll be carefully matched. No way they ever put him in with GGG.
I like big David price but that was embarrassing time to call it quits.eubank Jr is a funny one looks really good but none of these fights he has had are of a high quality
Don't think he would trouble any of the big guys in the super middleweight division.degale would be too slick and catch him with counter punches all night.callum smith and George groves would be too powerful for him.
Never mind stepping up to light heavy haha
Price doesn't know how to fight for a guy of his size. He should be taking control of the center of the ring and keeping his oppents at bay using his jab. His jab is pathetic for a man of his size, reach and power. When he's in the clinch he should be using his strength and force his weight on his opponents to tire them out Wlad Klitschko style, but he seems to allow himself to be forced back by much smaller men. The main problems Price has is poor ring IQ and serious stamina issues. He gasses out ridiculously easily and doesn't have a clue how to deal with pressure. As you said he should hang them up now.
