I had a quick look on Scottish Schools website. The player I was thinking of was Derek Trail but he was a year earlier. In Jimmy's year there was also Jim McCalliog & George Gartshore who IIRC was on Hibs books but never played a 1st team game. Even in those days the West bias was ridiculous, it was unusual for an Edinburgh player to be capped.

I thought that Graham and McBride would be our main strikers for a few years. Unfortunately the club owner thought differently.

HIBS scored first through Paul Kane but then had skipper Gordon Rae sent off

Despite being down to ten men HIBS held on then in 83 minutes a sublime flick from Kane put striker Stevie Archibald through on goal leaving Hearts’ Dave McPherson trailing in his wake as he smashed the ball into Henry Smith’s bottom left hand corner at the Gorgie Road end from fully 22 yards to make it 2-0 for HIBS to the utter elation of the HIBS fans on the Gorgie Road terrace behind the goal

Ive had the good fortune to play against Jim MCCalliog. He played the odd time in our local 5 a side league guesting for a team called Boston (named after a B'pool hotel) the same team boasted Tony Green and Dave Wagstaffe. Needless to say the won the league year in year out. They had another ex pro playing for them too who played for Bradford City but his names escapes me.

The HIBS fans got their first glimpse of striker Joe McBride the man brought in to replace Colin Stein and what a home debut he had with a first half hat-trick that had the HIBS fans asking at half-time Colin who?

Shooting up the slope Joe McBride was on target after only three minutes when German Goalkeeper Neuert dropped a Jimmy O’Rourke cross at his feet for an easy tap in

In the 14th minute just after Pat Stanton had cleared a shot off the line HIBS went two up. Alex Scott chased a throw in from O’Rourke held off a tackle from Geissner crossed hard and there was McBride flying in to bullet home a header

McBride scored his third on half-time taking a Stevenson pass first time with his left foot and the despairing goalkeeper could only help the ball into the net

Into the second half and with the advantage of the slope and a strong wind HIBS were unable to add to their total indeed with 20 minutes to go Naumann took advantage of a mixup in the HIBS defence to grab a valuable away goal. Minutes later Alex Scott was cynically hacked down by two defenders and when he retaliated he was immediately sent off by the Swiss Referee

With 5 minutes to go 10 man HIBS were robbed of an obvious penalty when O’Rourke was hacked down inside the box but the Referee ignored all appeals

Jim Jeffries’ Falkirk visited Easter Road on a freezing afternoon on League business. Gary Lennox gave the Bairns the lead with a looping effort after 12 minutes. Joe Tortolano equalised for the Hibees just one minute later to cries of ‘Joe Joe Super Joe’ from the terraces. Falkirk had a string of chances to score before the interval but a combination of their own inept finishing and splendid goalkeeping from John Burridge kept them out

HIBS improved after the break but Falkirk kept coming forward. Burridge denying the Bairns with more great saves then Gareth Evans scored with a header on 67 minutes. Substitute Brian Hamilton put the icing on the cake with a goal in the last minute

How many centre halfs can you fit in a side, with Rae, Hunter, MacIntyre, Mitchell and Orr all on the park. Mitchell would have been left back, Orr holding midfield and I’m assuming a very young Hunter was at right back?

Dougie Bell playing too. A very talented lad who never really made the most of his gift.

Aye, he was quite conservative in his approach to the game at times.

A guy like Bell was never going to offer the workrate Miller demanded from his players, guys like him and Joe McBride jnr were never going to fit into his style of play.

Morton arrived in confident mood for the second leg of this League Cup quarter final after the enigma that was Andy Ritchie had scored a hat-trick against league leaders Dundee United the previous Saturday. This talented Morton side also included Bobby Russell and Neil Orr

Hibs had their own joker up their sleeve though as they were given the go ahead to play Norwegian Internationals Sven Mathisen and Isaak Refvik who were still awaiting Work Permits

Mathisen’s promptings from midfield were a joy to behold while Refvik stole the show with two goals that took HIBS into the semifinals Both goals were set up for Refvik by Ralph Callachan the first from a free kick the second from a superb run and cross

There was a late scare however when Morton were awarded a late penalty kick and the normally reliable Andy Ritchie uncharacteristically blasted the ball over the crossbar

The Morton side contained a 21 year old fresh faced Joe Harper and sprinter George McNeil recently signed on a free transfer from Hibernian

Special mention to Ronnie ‘Faither’ Simpson who was outstanding in the HIBS goal

Willie Hamilton would go on to score 24 goals in 74 competitive appearances from midfield and would be rated by Pat Stanton as the best player he has ever played with

With the cold weather taking a grip and playing a part in proceedings HIBS once again paid the price for defensive frailties with two fine goals from Johnny Aitkenhead and Gordon Smith being cancelled out with a double from John Wardlaw

The Scottish Cup Third Round draw threw up a local derby for Hibernian as they were drawn to play Edinburgh University at their Corstorphine Sports Ground The Match was eagerly anticipated by the Edinburgh footballing public and special trains were put on from Waverley to Corstorphine and the crowd numbered several hundred in these embryonic times in football

HIBS lined up with Club Captain Michael Whelahan in goal and a splendid match ensued HIBS went two goals down but fought back in true Hibernian style with a hat-trick from Frank Rourke and two from Tailor Flynn

The press wrote that the cheering of the Hibernian supporters ‘baffles description’

They also commented that the heavy and unnecessary charging of the previous season was nowhere to be seen

This fine victory was followed up with a fourth round victory two weeks later at Powderhall with Hibernian soundly beating Rob Roy from Callendar by nine goals to nil
