England playing in Scotland shirts with Hearts socks. GTF 😀
Ridiculously lucky try for England there, unbelievable Jeff! 😊
England pi55ed it the second half. Still a scrappy game tho. We'll deliver your shirts back to you in the morning 😀👍
England were brutal. Only one team tried to play rugby. Kick, chase, give it big guys to run into folk. They have been very fortunate with the group and the way the competition will pan out.
To be fair, I didn't think Japan tried very much either until after Marler's header. Or at least they kept dropping it when they did.
But yeah, England were brutal. From Jonathan Liew in the Guardian:
Quote:
The entire effort of the future will be to invent silence, slowness and solitude,” the French surrealist painter Marcel Duchamp once said. Alas, Duchamp died in 1968 and was unable to witness Steve Borthwick’s England rendering his vision in perfect flesh. At the end of a game that seemed to last for about four months, it was England who were left still standing, still unbeaten, still playing the sort of rugby not even its mother could love.
France 96 Namibia 0, I'm not sure what the answer is but, surely an extra qualifying round before the actual Finals could be merited. 🤔
In order to avoid these results, you'd need to reduce the number of countries reaching the finals. The record WC score was Japan getting thumped by the All Blacks 145-17, all part of their development. Japan can now hold there own. Countries like Namibia, Portugal, Romania etc have earned their right to compete. For their fans and especially players, getting thumped by one of the big boys at the World Cup will probably be their greatest moment in the sport.
If you do that then there is no improvement for these teams. Its not too long ago that Scotland took 100 points off Japan in Perth. Japan improved by being able to play against T1 countries and learn from them. They also have a big financial input. But the smaller countries will get added finances by being at RWC. Unlike football the RWC is not just about being the winners, it's about Namibia etc being on the world stage and having a rare opportunity to play at that level. In football teams like San Marino regularly get the opportunity to play the big guns. In rugby it only comes along at RWC.
I'm well aware of all that, the first round hardly makes for a great spectacle unless the T1 teams are playing against each other. Quite handy that Georgia v Portugal and England v Chile are on tomorrow afternoon whilst the football is on, quite looking forward to the night time game though.
I would normally support Ireland against anyone else (being 1/16th Paddy mesel') even though my dislike of the increasingly moaning face Sexton has tested my support at times, but I'll be cheering on South Africa tonight.
Whatever the result though (and us beating Tonga is no foregone conclusion the way they played against Ireland for much of the game) we will have to beat Ireland. So it's better that is a straight shoot-out for 2nd if Ireland lose to SA. If Ireland beat SA and then we beat Ireland then qualification will come down to bonus points or points differential and you just know that Scotland would probably lose out and be the "unlucky heroic" non-qualifiers.
PS Kinghorn needs dropped. And Gilchrist. Maybe Schoo too.

The pre-match thing on ITV is rather awkward. They're demonstrating moves in the studio. Imagine doing that before a derby match with Hearts or something.
i can't believe SA attempted that penalty from there own half, they're obviously not very confident
think it was probably to relieve some pressure
but that was a lovely try for them
very poor kick for the extra two points
and another poor attempt
and yet again another shot at the sticks from there own half this time absolutely dreadful attempt
change yer kicker SA
good result Ireland, SA's poor kicking cost them, maybe see each other again in the Final
Yasss , absolutely delighted. What a team 👏🇮🇪
Worst result possible for Scotland. Very likely we now need three bonus point wins including v Ireland. Or beat them by more than 7 and surpass their points difference or SA's point difference if they don't get a bonus point win v Tonga.
Correction: if we end up level on points with Ireland (having beaten them) then it's the head-to-head which first determines who gets through.
It’s a nonsense that Scotland have yet to play their second game, and some teams have played three. Leaves us under all the pressure to chase results rather than getting fair match scheduling where everyone is able to pick up points in the group stages at a similar pace
That's only because this round of fixtures within the group isn't complete yet. But when group matches don't kick off at the same time, and are a day apart, I suppose scheduling-wise it might have been fairer to have the Scotland-Tonga game played before the SA-Ireland game. However, the way the result in that match went last night, we now know we have to pump Tonga with a bonus point and a 40-50 points difference. Had we played first we'd probably have just been happy to aim for a win.
Far too much chat about what we need to do vs Ireland. Hope the players aren’t thinking that way and are 100% focused on a decent Tonga side. Write them off at your peril.
Bit static this match. Spread it out more.
Decent 1st half. Expect more tries 2nd half as well. Will be amazed if that yellow isn't upgraded to red
Incredible decision not to go to red. Huge decision in relation to the group.
so, the Tonga player gets to carry on playing whilst the guy he clattered misses the 2nd half
Rugby is in a mess with this lack of consistency….
That is an absolutely disgraceful decision. That is as clear a red card as you will ever see with the new law. Ritchie out of the rest of the game and with concussionprotocols coukd even miss the next game, and dependingon passing the tests or not could even miss the Ireland game.
try to keep the pressure on with the line out and can't chuck the ball in straight
Both the yellows are clear as day reds.
Compare that with currys red in the first game.
Rugby is a joke

Cmon Australia!
that last Scotland try cost me £30
anyways next, Wales should be Australia tonight
Australia are not the team they used to be. Wales in control, Australia poor ……. Wales will win easily.
Wallabies shooting themselves in the foot big time
appalling line out then i'm sure i'm not the only one that just knew they would give away yet another penalty
quite a few more penalties to come for Wales i suspect
Australia will probably give away a penalty during the break as well
Lack of accuracy and discipline will cost Australia. That lineout 10m from the Wales line ended with 3 points to wales.
Tonga would beat Australia
in fact i think Namibia would as well
this game is finished after just 50 mins
How poor do Australia look?
Eddie Jones soon to be sacked by Australia I think. Talk of him going to Japan. No matter how unsuccessful you are, there’s always jobs for the boys.
Wales biggest winning margin against Australia was 24-0 in 1973....Mmmm
Eek glad the commentator mentioned Wales beat them in 1975 as well, 28-3
wee steady Eddie shouldn't have dropped Hooper and Cooper from the WC squad :agree:
having said that i doubt even they would have made much difference tbf
Just shows how much of a mockery it is to make the draw for a RWC finals 3 years before it kicks off.
Credit Wales they are looking so much better than they did in 6 nations
be interesting to see how the Ranking will look after this WC finishes

Eddie Jones left England in a mess and carried on by making Australia a mess.
we do at least have something to play for in the remaining two games, top three sides in each group automatically qualify for 2027 WC in Australia
Hope we rest a few key players for the Romania game (Russell, Duhan, Darcy, Darge, Dempsey, Kinghorn) so they’re fit and injury free v Ireland.
Could never cheer on an Eddie Jones side, so I was happy to see Wales go through (even though it meant Gatland winning). I do suspect Jones will be emptied: another failed experiment!
shame for Stuart Mcinally now officially retired after picking up a neck injury, didn't get that one last WC game
Off to be a commercial airline pilot. Hope he lands his planes as well as he landed this score at "rugby HQ".

Reasonable team for the weekend, managed to keep a balance of fringe players along with some main stays.
Team: Smith, Graham, Harris, Redpath, Steyn, Healy, Price, Bhatti, Ashman, Sebastian, Skinner, Gilchrist, Crosbie, Watson, M Fagerson.
Replacements: Matthews, Sutherland, Nel, Cummings, Darge, Horne, Kinghorn, Jones.
I am heading to Lille tomorrow morning for the game, nice to travel to a Scotland away game absolutely certain we will win - doesn't happen often!
Watching the Samoa Japan game, and I'm getting reminded why rugby players have never been known as style icons.
Is it just coincidence that the 2 worst hairstyles are sitting in the bin?
My money is on the other Samoan kicker joining them.
Blimey the Italians have just about given up already.
Same ref as the Wales Fiji game how on earth is he still getting games after that shambles
ABs mean business tonight. Looking so good all over the park
New Zealand at -39 was never in doubt :)
this is quite humiliating for the Italians, feel for them
That is some score against a Teir 1 nation. Relentless, physical, technically amazing, disciplined. Italy looked poor but that's because the ABs never let them into the game
Georgia 9 up against Fiji. Fiji have looked a shadow of the team that started the tournament so well. So many errors.
Scotland doing ok here but only against 13 men and still making mistakes but 42 - 0 up at half time not to be sniffed at
not too shabby from our 2nd string :greengrin HT 42-0
just remembered i stuck £10 on Romania at -59, oh well :)
Job done. Just need to be Ireland next Saturday!! Fancied us to donit for a few eeks now. Dunno why, but I've had a feeling we would beat them for ages now
why the heck did darcy graham take that quick throw, gave it away so cheaply
that could have cost us :)
Need to beat Ireland and score four tries and win by more than seven. Not sure we can manage that. Think there will be a score we need to beat them by that we don't need four tries. Assume something like 15 or 16 not sure. Big ask. Thought some of Scotlands play was excellent and Darcy is a bit of a star.
Winning by more than 7 will be enough for Scotland. Four tries not needed. However other than one World Cup warm up game 12 years ago that didn't feature first choice teams Scotland haven't beaten Ireland by more than 7 for over 20 years.
Find it impossible to imagine we'll beat Ireland. They are a magnificent side and that win over South Africa was astounding.
Got to feel a bit sorry for Portugal here, started really well, got a yellow card that may well be upgraded to a red, game over.
As long as SA get the bonus point win v Tonga. If not, and we beat Ireland without a bonus point and deny them a losing bonus point, then all three teams will be on 14 points with 1W and 1L against the other two tied teams, so then points difference will determine the two qualifiers.
Same would apply if SA get the bonus v Tonga, we beat Ireland with a 4 try bonus and they get a losing bonus ie all three teams on 15 points.
Scotland win 6/1 with Betway. Definitely worth a wee wager.
Ali Price in for Ben White on Saturday
All Ireland need to do is win, no matter how. Ugly will do them just fine. I think they will keep it tight, play a territory game with the boot and kick their points. I thought Toony would counter that with Harris and Steyn, try and keep us in it, then unleash Graham and Jones in the 2nd half but he's been very positive with his selection. Ireland's winning run has got to end some time. Don't see why it can't be us that does it. You can't be confident but we're not as big an underdog as the bookies and most pundits think.
Battle of the Anthems coming up
The Italy coach is like the dying replicant in Blade Runner.
I fully expect us to lose tonight: but dear Lord im already nervous.
Samoa England game very watchable
Samoa have been out of steam for the last 20 mins i'm amazed they are still holding on but england will go on to win this
