It’s from his own ****ing PPS :grr: There is no way in the world the PMs own PPS could have the authority to do that without the PMs own authority?!
It’s as if they are trying to see how much they can get away with.
I know Corbyn would have fellatioed a goat while chanting anti Semitic devil worshipping tropes while having a covid restriction busting party if he was in charge, i mean thank god it’s not that Russian oligarch loving nutcase but still, Boris must have some questions to answer, no?

The police would have known this as guard number 10. I see they are “liasing” with the cabinet office rather than investigating. I recall these parties were taking place at the same time plod were driving round our local park threatening people and telling them to go home.
The Met knew what was happening at Downing Street. How can they be trusted?
Cressida Dick must have been made a Dame by Johnson for services to keeping your mouth shut!
If he doesn't go over this then that's it, Tory PMs can literally do anything.
Am I the only one who hopes he doesn't go straight away? Sunak terrifies me, and every time a new scandal like this comes out the more they slip in the polls.
The longer this goes on, the more in the Tory party are involved and tarnished with it.

He must be reckoned toast if she's feeling free to start her pitch to the next incumbent.
Be interesting to see how many Tory backbenchers turn out for PMQs tomorrow.

Watching Michael Fabricant on sky news trying to defend the actions of the Tories having their parties at Downing Street. You cannot tell the public to obey rules and then break the rules. Boris must go now and others who broke the rules be dealt with accordingly. Their arrogance is beyond belief.

I notice that Johnson is apologising for the upset ‘which the allegations have caused’ and not the upset ‘which their actions have caused’. Smoke screening the issue and expecting to be cleared of any misdoing, which will be the case. He appears to be unscrupulously untouchable.
I’m a Whitehall based civil servant. I’ve seen the same take as you on twitter, but I disagree. If I received the same email from my SoS’s PS, I would assume that the “we” in the email referred to the private office as a group and that they were inviting people from the wider department. If the invite had anything to do with the SoS, it would say so. You can’t automatically assume any minister is directly involved in their staff’s social events.
I’ve always said this guy is Teflon and nothing will stop him but I’m beginning to waver. I have a sneaky suspicious that he’ll be gone before PMQ’s tomorrow. No evidence or anything, just feel it’s inevitable now and he will want to avoid one more embarrassment.

Are you talking about slam dunk that he planned it or just did not stop it from going ahead? Although in these circumstances there may not be much of a difference between the two in terms of an error in judgment.
It is possible that a PO organises something, the minister happens to walk by and then decides to stick his head in for a moment (thank people for their hard work, etc…).
Who’s really leading Britain – Boris Johnson or the crazy-face emoji? | Marina Hyde | The Guardian
I’m afraid the only sane response to this is: what?! What are you even talking about? Did you or didn’t you go to a big party in your garden, you smirking fibreglass toby jug? Or do you also have to wait for some veteran civil servant to tell you whether or not you put your pants on the right way round this morning? Honestly mate, just MAN UP.
:faf:
I used to be a U.K. govt civil servant myself, although that does not in itself give you or I any particular unique insight on this situation which is so blatantly obvious. The PPS was acting on behalf of #10. If the PPS is acting in exclusion from his PM, arranging his own parties at Whitehall it would be the first time in recorded parliamentary history. It’s a ridiculous suggestion.

Led by Donkeys as always superb
PMQs will be worth watching today (not always the case).
It was his own garden, he was allowed to go and drink in it. He didn't know other people were going to be there, he was furious when he found out and left immediately after finishing his first couple of bottles of wine. He broke no rules, vaccine rollout, and the matter's closed.
If Johnson resigns then hopefully proof gets out of which MPs attended parties. There'll be a fair few PM hopefuls who won't be standing in the leadership election.
Yup.
I'd imagine there must be security protocols put into place when large gatherings take place in outdoor spaces at Number 10 (especially when the PM is in attendance).
The Met, or special branch atleast, would have known it was taking place. Although I do have some sympathy with special branch on this, they're not really there to enforce day to day law but rather ensure the protection of the PM and the building itself.
Still not a great look for them.

Looks like Sunak isn't at PMQs today.
Johnson "apologises" but still trying to pass the party off as a "work event" "technically within guidance".
He’s making a half apology here…’even if it’s technically within the rules’ NO ! That’s not the issue.
That's almost beyond belief as a statement.
I thank our NHS colleagues…
Please ask the **** about the Health and Welfare Bill which is selling the NHS off piece by piece.
Resign! Says Keith.
Johnson sounds done.
Starmer is putting the boot in. Johnson is squirming like a worm on a hook.
Lies, lies, lies.
This is much better from Starmer.
‘Lying through his teeth’ says Starmer.
That’s no different to Dawn Butler calling him a liar, even if he puts in the prefix ‘the public think’.
Boris looks rattled. Think he knows his time is up. Keir doing a good job so far.
Johnson replies along the lines of "It's up to the right honourable gentleman as to how he conducts himself" without a hint of irony.
Starmer and the front bench laugh in his face.
If this was a boxing match the towel would have been thrown in long before now. This is painful.
Wait until the inquiry is completed would appear to be the generic rebuff of choice today, I suspect we'll be hearing this more today.
Great question about The PM misleading the house on inflation figures. He was caught out by the BBC fact check people. He refuses to apologise.
Finally, I think he might actually be done. He will drag it out a bit longer in the desperate hope he can bribe, intimidate or bluff his way through as he's always done.
But I think this is the beginning of the end for Boris as PM.
It’s actually infuriating viewing. Important but infuriating. He’s a disgrace.
Starmer did ok but he's not a great speaker. Dare I say Blair would have torn the PM off a bigger strip?
"I should have recognised that even if it could be said technically to fall within the guidance".
WTF planet is this guy on?
Great question about Johnson getting sacked for lying in 2 previous jobs and why his job as Prime Minister should be any different
This is glorious watching him get a right good kicking, he looks like a defeated man.
He’ll be gone by spring.
I'm going to go on a bold one here - a general election in the spring wouldn't shock me. Anyone with honour would resign, but he's not and even in that statement he had the tone of "don't blame me, other people did it and I just thought it was a work party" and "the rage towards me...and my government".
He's vain enough to do it I reckon.
A lawyer deconstructs Johnson's defence (spoiler - ropey as ****).

Dearie me an apology, don't think so. He would have known of the email and if people were in his garden breaking the rules would any person with half a brain not say to the gathering WTF do you think you are doing the country is in lockdown. He broke the rules he should go.
This Prime Minister (Temporary Replacement) bill is getting a reading on Friday. Coincidence? :greengrin

Thats absolutely spot on:agree: everything that was said by him in the commons today was about protecting his personal liability. Its constructing a legal defence. That is always the cas e to some extent in the HoC but today felt more like a cross examination with the accused occasionally straying from 'no Comment' or 'I wish to exercise my rights under the 5th amendment'...The whole thing was an insult to democracy but compelling viewing all the same.
