The torys have absolutely aced how to say one [good] thing in public while legislating the exact opposite and taking the unthinking public along with them dreaming of sunlit uplands.

That decision has already been made I think. The media decides who the British Prime Minister is, they have a timetable in mind, they’ve had these photos for a year, they’ve chosen their moment. They do what they need to do to protect their interests as billionaires. Its quite depressing when you think about it.
BBCs Nick Robinson, ex chair of Oxford UnisYoung Conservatives before he got into journalism? :greengrin
You could of course be right, and it’s an easy trap to fall into, to see conspiracy everywhere, when sometimes it’s just a straightforward political
stab in the back from one of your colleagues.
The unfortunate link is Eddie Mair. Ripped Johnson to shreds, then he got made PM. Here's what he did to Truss, then she got made Foreign Secretary. A bad omen!

Of course it is. She's (maybe) the only one not tainted by a dodgy ppe contract and is a grade a sherrif's badge. A natural.
Gove was probably next up but the tsunami/tidal wave of charleston stories will hit the press at some point. Best not have a septummly challenged blow-brain as PM.

quite astonishing the level Tory politicians will stoop to for money Tory MP needing ‘to pay school fees’ pleaded for lucrative Middle East work | Conservatives | The Guardian Tory politicians truly are total dirtbags, and fools actually vote them in to allow them those opportunities
A Conservative MP pleaded with a fixer to help him secure a well-paid second job with a Saudi company or other work relating to the Middle East, at one point saying he needed money to pay school fees.
Daniel Kawczynski’s repeated pleas for lucrative employment – revealed in a series of WhatsApp messages seen by the Guardian – show him citing his pro-Saudi stance in parliament as part of an attempt to get paid work from a businessman.
Kawczynski arranged to host one potential Saudi employer in parliament, offering him a tour of the House of Commons and a dinner in the MPs’ private dining room. He also arranged to meet the fixer in his parliamentary office to discuss a project.
i remember corbyn getting slated in the Tory press for something very similar
hopefully they manage to stop the corrupt government selling them off to rich Tory donors :agree:
Channel 4 bosses ask bankers to screen alternatives to government sell-off | Business News | Sky News
i've saw a couple of interviews by CH4 journalists that had Johnson replying like he has always done in any awkward interview/questions ah er um ah uh i i i err
they ask the questions every other journalist for state TV/other channels are not allowed to ask
this Tory MP gets telt a couple of facts by chris whitty
Kit Yates on Twitter: "“This is sometimes said by people who have no understanding of health at all... and when they say it, it's usually because they want to make a political point.” Whitty on scorching form. North Shropshire by-election looks like the Tories closest political friends the Lib Dems will win the protest vote with just a 46.3% turnout, down from 67.9% in 2019, at least it's a tiny bloody nose for the crime minister
be interesting to see the breakdown
lol a prime minister, avoiding a question because he's a coward and it wasn't a pre-approved question so he didn't have time to practise the answer
Super Tanskiii on Twitter: "I wish I could bottle Johnson’s expression here. It’s not PMQs so he didn’t have a lie prepared. I don’t think he, or any of us, expected Peston to actually do his job properly. Where has this scrutiny been for the past two years? https://t.co/NKgw5Nqom6" / Twitter
That's a big shock in North Shropshire. Tory land for 200 years!
I expected them to have a refuced majority but to lose a 23K seat so spectacularly is quite something. A well deserved doing.
Just imagine how current Tory MPs in much more marginal seats must be feeling now. The party is ruthless when it comes to potential election defeats; even Thatcher learned that lesson. Johnson must be expecting a leadership challenge soon; there will be numerous plotters against him now.
It's a bit of a double edged sword.
On the one hand I can't think of many worse to lead us through a rocky couple of months. When we need decisive action, we will get dither, delay and u turns.
The flip side is the best opportunity to get rid of the Tories at the next election is with Johnson still in the hot seat. It seems the middle ground, small c conservatives are starting to come to their senses and have realised the joke has ceased to be funny. If he goes they might rustle up someone competent from somewhere.
The last part could be a long shot though. Rory Stewart would have frightened me but he's long gone. Sunak retains a bit of popularity due to furlough and so on. However the rest are just a **** show. Truss is as big a flip flopper as Johnson, Raab has all the charm and charisma of a lamp post, I don't believe that anyone could name a single redeeming feature Gove has and Harold Shipman would score higher in an empathy test than Patel.
The blue wall will crumble but the red wall may not be fully rebuilt. Metro areas will become intensely red. A complete realignment of the English political landscape on the cards.
Johnson thinks he's Churchill but the politician from the past I'd most like to see him emulate is Profumo. High office, mired in sleaze/corruption with a hint of Russian, then disappeared completely from public life for the several decades until his death.
I think that is Boris gone, but I suspect Sunak will be in and there poll numbers will rebound. I also think he'll do a much better job of at least appearing competent than Boris. That, combined with the fact that Labour still seem to be struggling in the polls mean Tory governments aren't going anywhere.
He definitely won't be devoting himselflessly to anything, but, please, let him not be wheeled out to give his worthless opinions on stuff forevermore. Johnson pater is bad enough for that. (Unless some years from now it's to give personal reflections on conditions inside prison cells, which would be welcome.)
this is pure comedy from the minister for comedy......they're right, he IS a funny guy
Kevin Maguire on Twitter: "Johnson blaming the media for reporting sleaze and Covid parties shows he’s learned nothing from North Shropshire. Doubly funny when he was a propagandist infamous for making up stories. https://t.co/fyQlqimaBA" / Twitter

It's almost as if having parties and gatherings that are directly in contravention of your own instructions whilst people are isolating and even dying, isn't down to you or something you could influence.
He was only Prime minister FFS, at the very least he could have worn a disguise when he was quizmaster.

Less chat about which meeting he was at when he finally decided to return.

Maybe not the cleverest statement to say out loud that your candidate got in on a least-worst ticket rather than people voted for what was being campaigned. Farron is a bit of an Alan Partridge politician and Ed Davey will do well to keep him on the fringes of any recovery. I don't see this result as any more than a vote against rather than a vote for. The Orange Book Liberals are old style wet Tories , so it will be interesting to see the strategy that they use to try and build on this.

BREAKING: Nadine Dorries has been REMOVED from a Tory MP WhatsApp group for backing the PM
An excellent piece from Kenan Malik on these so called ‘libertarians’ from the right. If you are a libertarian, why aren’t you voting against all this new illiberal Tory legislation, backbenchers?

The reasons he gave for resigning were also tax rises and the NI rise to pay for social care. The tiny policy crumbs of comfort that this extremist right wing govt has done for the poor. Which shows exactly who he is.

Whenever they are on TV every one of them seem to say they are "busy with the vaccine roll-out". If I were the interveiwer I'd be expanding the question and asking "what exactly is it you are doing today that takes up all your time that has to do with vaccine roll-out?" Guaranteed "splutter, stumble" answer as the NHS do all of that work while they get pissed and pull Christmas crackers in between quizzes.

Can't believe Raab is putting himself up as today's defender of the indefensible, thought his ambitious sliminess would see his sights set a bit higher. Anyway, apparently it now transpires that if you had a hard day with some stressful meetings it was ok to wind down with a few bevvies and ignore all the rules. All totally fine.
Edit - I see in another interview Raab described the party-goers as having been working "in gruelling conditions".
"Gruelling."
FFS.
How much more is being handed to the press on Johnson?
It's just being drip fed at the moment. Scandal, uproar, starts to calm down, boom! New picture or revelation. It's evidently being done in this way to keep the pressure on and keep him guessing. He can't lie his way out of it because he doesn't know what they do or don't have access to next.
The question is who is behind it and why? With the exception of the Express even the right wing press are pushing the anti Johnson rhetoric now and want him gone. That's worrying as they won't want some cuddly type moving them back towards the centre as his replacement.
This works really well though. The more that's leaked, the more probable it is that someone within the Tory party is doing their for their own means.
It makes them all look more like a bunch of snakes. The more reputations that Johnson can damage before he goes, the better.
The answer is the Tory party itself, or the forces that operate with the same interest of maximising gains for the City of London and the top 2%. Which is why the clownish one's demise isn't really anything to celebrate, there will just be a new sheriff in town shortly.
