Johnson thinks he's Churchill but the politician from the past I'd most like to see him emulate is Profumo. High office, mired in sleaze/corruption with a hint of Russian, then disappeared completely from public life for the several decades until his death.
I think that is Boris gone, but I suspect Sunak will be in and there poll numbers will rebound. I also think he'll do a much better job of at least appearing competent than Boris. That, combined with the fact that Labour still seem to be struggling in the polls mean Tory governments aren't going anywhere.

Maybe not the cleverest statement to say out loud that your candidate got in on a least-worst ticket rather than people voted for what was being campaigned. Farron is a bit of an Alan Partridge politician and Ed Davey will do well to keep him on the fringes of any recovery. I don't see this result as any more than a vote against rather than a vote for.
