D’ye mind that day we had a tv crew on the bus going through to the final....we were so pissed off at the score we left without him on the return journey!

I was there worth a Celtic supporting ex. The pitch was surrounded by a pretty high fence back then so it took a while for the Celtic fans to get on to the pitch in large numbers. A lot of the Rangers fans had already left but came back in to the stadium. Beats me how they were provoked when they couldn’t even see the pitch but there you go. Then it was mayhem. There really was no comparison between that day and what happened at our final yet the press tried to say it was the same. 1979 was driven by anger and hatred. Whilst in 2026 it genuinely was good natured exuberance.
Clear penalty. 🙄

16/5/1951 Friendly International Challenge Match
Scotland 1 v 0 France
Reilly 78
France were much the better side playing the better football keeping the ball on the deck, hitting the crossbar in four minutes and having a goal disallowed for an infringement in 67 minutes
Scotland did not respond well to being outplayed for long periods of the game and four or five players should hang their heads in shame for their behaviour in this international friendly
Scotland did not deserve to win but they scored what proved to be the winner when Redpath was allowed to run with the ball unchallenged from his own box before sending over a cross for Lawrie Reilly to gloriously head home. A goal that had to be seen to to be believed
The French heads seemed to go down after this loss and Newcastle’s Bobby Mitchell missed the easiest of chances from close range when his effort hit the post

Billy, these have been brilliant. Let's hope that in a years time you are writing about Hibs winning the cup on this day in history. 🇳🇬🤞🇳🇬🤞🇳🇬🤞🇳🇬

27/5/1902 Glasgow Charity Cup Semi Final
Morton 0 v 3 Hibernian
Callaghan 2
McGeachan
As Scottish Cup holders HIBS were invited to contest the Glasgow Charity Cup
Having knocked out Rangers in Glasgow HIBS now found themselves up against Morton at neutral Tynecastle
Hibs were in confident mood having won the Scottish Cup The East Of Scotland League The McCrae Cup and the Roseberry Charity Cup
Hibs played the same team that had recently defeated Hearts in the Roseberry Cup Final with Barney Breslin replacing the injured Jimmy Harrower
There was no scoring in the first half but HIBS were dealt a cruel blow when Johnny Divers did not reappear for the second half leaving HIBS down to 10 men
Ten Man HIBS however took command of the game with Paddy Callaghan scoring a quick fire double
A third goal from Andy McGeachan finished Morton off but Hibs finished the match with nine men as Bobby Atherton had to retire with a facial injury
So on to the Glasgow Charity Cup Final at Hampden where Hibernian faced Celtic on 31st May who were out for revenge for their recent Scottish Cup Final defeat at Parkhead
Hibs were without the injured Harrower and Divers and things looked bleak on a rain and windswept Hampden Park but a reshuffled HIBS team rose magnificently to the occasion brushing aside Celtic to lead 5-0 at half-time and eventually winning the game 6-2 despite a mini Celtic revival in the second half
The Hibernian goalscorers that day were McGeachan 3, Gray, Callaghan and Breslin
Hibs Rennie Hogg Glen Breslin Gray Robertson Stewart McGeachan Callaghan Atherton and Buchan
This all conquering HIBS side would go on to win the Scottish First Division for the first time the following season 1902-03

https://youtu.be/dkHkCUegAv8
After coming back from 0-2 down in the first leg to win 3-2 Hibs arrived in Greece full of expectation but the Greeks and their fans obviously still fancied their chances needing only a one goal victory to qualify
This almost came to pass in 44 minutes when Tsilianidis rattled the crossbar with a header HIBS attacked from the rebound Kamberi fed in Super John McGinn who blasted the ball into the opposite corner to send the fans behind the goal into raptures
Things got worse for Asteras three minutes into the second period when they had a man sent off
Down to ten men the Greeks continued to pour forward and pulled one back when that man Tsilianidis again managed to roll Ambrose before striding on to slot the ball beyond Adam Bogdan
Bogdan who some fans held responsible for the two goals lost in Edinburgh performed heroically pulling off no less than five fantastic saves from three goal bound headers and two one on ones as HIBS held on for a deserved victory

Matt Busby played for Hibs during the war so would be aware of Gordon Smith. Would have been a superstar in England. Tom Finney was asked how it felt to be the best winger in the world. His response was that that chap Smith at Hibs might not agree with that. Unfortunately Gordon Smith suffered from the Scotland teams being picked by committee. My father said that Laudrup at Rangers was the nearest thing to Gordon Smith that he had seen.
Spoke to a few Jambo friends of my dad who said when Hearts were playing away they would go to Easter Road to watch Gordon Smith. Dundee and Hearts fans would agree that they won the league due to having him in their side. Only wish had been able to see him in the flesh.

The 1984 game against Dundee reminded of the strange situation that we used to get better attendances against some of the other mid sized clubs away from home in those days.
We'd quite often have pretty crappy home crowds like 5,000 or so, then get a massive away support against the same club.
TBF, I often preferred away matches as well, as the atmosphere was often a lot better.

51 years ago today I made my first visit to the Holyground to see Hibs vs Rangers in the League Cup quarter final first leg. Came up on the bus from Hawick, telling my mother I was at the Youth centre. A crowd of 34,000 packed into ER. I stood on the upper section of the old East terrace. Despite losing 3-1 my love affair with Hibs was cemented as we played with cavalier style down the slope
in our famous green tops with white sleeves.
Hibs’ cause that night not helped by conceding a goal in the first minute
Arthur ‘Nijinsky’ Duncan pulled one back at 0-2 but HIBS were caught with the sucker punch twenty minutes from the end as they went in search of the equaliser
Hibs would lose the second leg 1-3 with Johnny Graham scoring
Prior to this game HIBS had been flying and would beat Celtic 2-0 at Easter Road 10 days later with Joe McBride scoring a double one of which a swivel and shot on the turn still described as one the best goals ever seen at Easter Road

Yip remember I used to climb to the top of Shaw Heights before every game and was knackered by the time I reached the top
What a vista. Arthur’s Seat to the left I would look down on the green postage stamp that was the pitch and watch for the teams to run out like ants
I would wait for HIBS to decide which way they were kicking and then proceed to make my way behind the respective away goal
One particular memory is John Blackley’s ball juggling prematch routine truly a joy to behold

Yip confirmed in the Match Report link
I thought Willie MacFarlane was a great Manager for HIBS had us playing flowing attacking football top of the League and an eye for a player just a shame Tom Hart did not agree
Eddie Turnbull was no bad as well :greengrin
