Nah, I have this clear image in my mind of Tiny standing by the tunnel telling John he had to go. Stein then came out the dugout & shouted 'you're a disgrace' at John. Big J then turned towards Stein who ran away but not before John, allegedly, booted him on his erchie. Davidson reffed the 1st game & allowed the ludicrous Celtc goal but I'm sure it was Wharton for the replay.

“With Celtic leading 3-0 John MacNamee was sent off by Referee Bobby Davidson for complaining too heatedly about being booked for a foul on John Hughes out near the left touchline . MacNamee was adamant he hadn’t even touched the player a fact seemingly borne out on TV later that evening and for a while refused to leave the field “

Bobby Hutchinson headed HIBS ahead after only two minutes from Ally MacLeod’s cross. Strikes from Ian Clinging and Mike Larnach gave Motherwell the lead before Ally MacLeod equalised from the penalty spot. With time running out Motherwell were awarded a penalty kick but Mike McDonald brilliantly dived to his left to save Peter Marinello’s low effort. This seemed to galvanise HIBS and with two minutes remaining Gordon Rae accepted Ralph Callachan’s square pass and dispatched a rising drive into the top right hand corner to secure all three points for HIBS

Jock Stein gave the fans a taste of what they might expect under his tenure when he invited European Champions Cup runners up Real Madrid to Easter Road for a Challenge Match
30000 HIBS fans turned up to witness a masterclass performance as HIBS put on a superb display with our very own Willie Hamilton and Pat Quinn dominating a Real midfield that included the legendary Ferenc Puskas
Before the game Jock Stein showed his players on a blackboard the tactics he wanted them to employ but things turned out even better than he had anticipated when 18 year old Peter Cormack scored with a drive after 13 minutes and Pat Quinn had a free kick deflected into his own net by a defender in the second half

Hibernian 2 v 1 Rangers
Hunter
Harper
Walter Smith brought his high flying Rangers side to Easter Road and they would lose for the first time after taking the lead in an away fixture. This came to pass when Basil Boli gave Rangers an early lead with a header from a Brian Laudrup corner
Hibs held on until half-time and Rangers reappeared for the second half without Richard Gough and David MacPherson with Mark Hateley operating as a utilty centre-half.
Gordon Hunter took advantage of hesitation in the Rangers defence when he bundled home Michael O’Neills cross from a free kick after 46 minutes via a knee for the equaliser
Smelling blood Alex Miller played the last 30 minutes with six forwards and this worked a treat when 18 year old Kevin Harper bulleted a header past Andy Goram from another superb Michael O’Neill cross with 10 minutes to go
Basil Boli was dismissed six minutes from the end for a foul on Gareth Evans after an earlier booking for kicking the speedy Kevin Harper up in the air one too many times
Special mention for Graeme Love who kept the usually always immaculate Brian Laudrup quiet for virtually the full 90 minutes

43256 spectators turned up at Easter Road to watch two fast free flowing attacking teams going for it and sharing eight goals in a thriller
Both sides were the top scorers in the country and were neck and neck in the table and something had to give. HIBS were without stopper John McNamee and that would prove decisive
Peter Cormack opened the scoring for HIBS after 10 minutes Joe McBride and Stevie Chalmers gave Celtic the lead. Joe Davis equalised from the spot after Billy McNeill had pulled Eric Stevenson down in the box. McBride completed his hat-trick just before half-time time to make the half-time score 2-4
McBride then scored his own fourth and Celtic’s fifth just after half-time with Alan McGraw scoring a late consolation for HIBS in the final minute

Pat Stanton played centre half in the 5-3 loss. It would be fair to say that it didn't go well:greengrin.
Funnily enough I remember saying to someone at the game"If only we could get that boy McBride here". Goodness knows how many goals he would have scored if he hadn't knackered his knee at Celtic. I'm sure he missed half the season but was still top scorer in the country.

Rangers 1 v 0 Hibernian ( Agg 1-2)
8500 HIBS supporters made their way along the M8 to see if their team could hold onto the 2-0 lead HIBS had established in the first leg at Easter Road
Thanks to delays on the motorway many fans would miss the opening goal scored by Davy Cooper after half an hour an excellently executed free kick from the edge of the box that flew into Alan Rough’s top right postage stamp corner.
Hibernian stalwart Gordon Rae was booked in the build up to the free kick when he pulled down Ally McCoist outside the box a booking that meant he would miss the final against Sir Alex Ferguson’s all conquering Aberdeen
Hibs managed to hold on due to some excellent defending and goalkeeping and were always dangerous on the counterattack and could easily have scored an away goal as the Rangers defence could not handle the strength and pace of a young Gordon Durie all that was required at times was a wee bit composure in front of goal

Hibernian 2 v 1 Dundee
Stein
McGraw
A rip roaring old fashioned Cup tie at a packed Tynecastle
George McLean gave Dundee the lead after only six minutes to silence the large HIBS support. Colin Stein equalised almost immediately with what was to be his last goal for the club
The game went from end to end with if truth be told Dundee looking the more likely
Into the second half and Bob Shankly decided to beef up our attack by taking off midfielder Pat Quinn and replacing him with pocket battleship Jimmy O’Rourke. Disaster struck however minutes later when Alan McGraw had to be stretchered off with a serious leg injury leaving HIBS down to ten men with 15 minutes remaining
With five minutes to go and extra time looming Alan McGraw reappeared to huge cheers from the HIBS fans with a huge strapping on his injured left knee. Barely able to run McGraw had been introduced as nuisance value hoping to tie up a defender
With seconds to go HIBS won a corner out on our left Jimmy O’Rourke swung in an inswinging cross that was somehow twice cleared off the line by desperate Dundee defenders but McGraw who looked incapable of movement managed to lunge forward and force the ball over the line past the stranded Dundee goalkeeper Ally Donaldson with his injured knee
With virtually no time left for Dundee to respond pandemonium broke out both on and off the park as HIBS realised they were actually going to a cup final for the first time in 18 years

Footnote: Eric Stevenson tells the story that HIBS were on £50 a man to qualify for the final and after the game he was walking along Princes Street with Willie Wilson heading towards the East End in order to catch a bus or a train back to Wallyford and Bonnyrigg anyway they walked into a bar full of hibbies and in true western style Willie suddenly announced “ The drinks are on me!”

Just to point out to youngsters that in 1968 it was only 10 years since we’d been to a cup final not 18:greengrin

Took it from Stevie’s book
I also always thought that he swung in the corner for McGraw’s goal as I was standing right at the corner flag but he says it was O’Rourke unless it was a shorty or the ball was cleared back to Wee Jimmy
