Berlin was buzzing, the clubs and theatres were packed with revellers and the youth were carefree and decadent and then boom, the depression of 1929 hit and Germany suffered most because its economy was built on foreign investment which got pulled overnight. The Nationalists from 1914 weren't gone, they'd been put in their box after the war but the recession of 1929 saw them crawl back out from their hibernation and gainsupport. Their support came from the middle who were looking for scapegoats and the Nazis exploited that and blamed the Jews and socialists/communists. If you think the extreme right will just dissolve then you're badly mistaken. Their next metamorphosis will be even more odious than what we've seen the last few years, it's how fascism works, it's a cancer that is just waiting on an opportunity to reappear but with a vengeance.
