Absences due to Covid-19 is affecting about one-in-10 staff across all health trusts, the health union Unison has said.
Statistics on Wednesday revealed the extent of the problem, with thousands of workers off sick or isolating.
Unison representative James Large said the pandemic has highlighted the need for long-term strategic thinking.
He said the pandemic has shone "a light on a service that hasn't been run properly for a number of years".

The changes to isolation rules are hopefully a game changer for unnecessary staff absences. Long overdue and much welcomed for me.
BBC Breaking News - Novak Djokovic legal challenge against his deportation from Australia adjourned until Monday.
It's a complete nonsense these guidelines. My kids couldnt go back to school because although BOTH negative on several LFTs over the last 8 days because I tested positive on the 30th Dec. If I tested positive yesterday and they were negatives yesterday and today they would be OK to go back to school today. No wonder people have had enough and are just getting on with their life after finding out they're positive with no symptoms.
Must be a bitter blow to the Tennis organisers not to have the best player in the world there, in a way dilutes the whole competition, like many football players who are not vaccinated Novak should grow up and get vaccinated. Australia's border controls are pretty harsh even in normal instances
There's not a playbook on how to deal with pandemics though - things are going to change as we progress our understanding and have new ways to mitigate against the affects of the virus.
What you've described sounds like the rules getting better for society - it just so happens they were applicable to you when they were stricter - which is progress of our understanding, not a nonsense.
Thankfully I've not heard of anyone who is in the boat of "just getting on with it" after a positive test result. That's quite selfish and irresponsible.
Question on isolation, I work in a cafe and one of my colleagues who I was working with yesterday has just tested positive on an LFT. What does this mean for me?
No he isn't. The new guidelines are only from midnight today. As yesterday it was still the old guidelines as I have been instructed by our kids school today when they sent them home as I tested positive before the new guidelines started today. Both kids have had numerous negative LFTs
Anyone well versed on legal speak? What does the defence statement that 'most of the evidence will be capable of agreement' mean here?

Took my 2 year old daughter to the Doctors and it turns out she has a viral infection and she's been given antibiotics however we were told she also must get a PCR as she has a temperature. Maybe I'm just being silly but would that not be explained by the viral infection they've just diagnosed her with?
It's incredibly frustrating but the GP will advise that they should get a test if they have any symptoms (at the first sign of a temperature), in my experience. We struggled a bit last year as my daughter had a virus and the doctor basically wouldn't see her until we had done a PCR, even though we were fairly certain that she didn't have COVID.
I appreciate they are simply trying to take a cautious/prudent approach but I'd use your own discretion.
570 0-5 yr olds hospitalised with COVID-19 in England *in just a week*
Didn’t make much of your post before this sentence but dearie f***** me! Ever thought that if these “people” (wonder who they are) were actually taking such a ridiculous attitude, they’re a big reason why we will continue to have all these restrictions and guidelines you’re moaning about?
As much as the reduced isolation period is welcome I think the negative LFT tests at the end are pretty important. I took a test that showed up positive yesterday and I’m well past the 7 day from first symptoms point.
Negative today now so hopefully that’ll be that.
And if you missed the sarcasm of the post you quoted its little wonder you’re struggling to accept the guidelines, Coco!
Of course you’re not allowed to leave the house if you’re positive, symptoms or otherwise. You can’t possibly be arguing this far down the line and not realise the virus is passed on regardless of symptoms!?
